Tommy Mouton checking in...Wayne...I love you bro...you are my idol even after all these years of playing radio for 26 years. You're music still stands out as the best!
hindsite is 20/20. Wayne did it the right way. He changed the traditional to progressive to attract the younger fans and everybody came, young and old. The man is an accordion and entertainment master and he can bring it! He can bring it old style better than most and he can bring it new. In my opinion, holding onto and mastering that old style Cajun music is what kept us all waiting for him to play us a tune now and then. The crowds would errupt when he'd sit down and play one.
I remember as a child listening to KRVS on Sunday's and the announcers referring to Wayne Toups as, "Lejeune Wayne Toups" as if it was meant as derogatory in a sense due to his modern style of cajun music. Personally I always thought that Wayne was a great ambassador of the Cajun culture through his version of our music. His music has reached out to outsiders and people that weren't quite into the historic traditional music and brought them in to the fold. In my opinion he is one the best accordion players that has ever lived. Keep it up Wayne! Also Wilson Savoy good job on cataloging our history and its music.
Actually Lejeune means Young in french and Wayne was younger back than. I remember them calling him that also....It's actually a compliment they were giving him cause he was a talented young artist......
I remember as a small child going to the cajun dance and dancing the whole time. Wonderful fun to share with family and friends.
