    I think you're almost right. But I think Avada Kedavra doesn't summon the spirits of the dead, but Death itself (taking away the soul with it's black wings). That's why Avada Kedavra is a violation of the rules of nature (Death is supposed to come by itself, not summoned by a wizard). And that's why using Avada Kedavra breaks the soul of the wizard who use it.
    And it makes a connection between the three brothers (who probably invented the three unforgivable curses) and their "encounter" with Death itself and the three Holows who are very probably tied to death.

      Why do you think Avada Kedavra breaks the sould of the wizard who uses it? The closest to this idea is the whole idea of creating a Horcrux, however Avada Kedavra is not what matters, but the act of murder. If you use magic to fling a boulder on someones head that should suffice as a pre-requisite to create one.

    I’ve always thought it was the soul effected also.
    But could it be electricity? If Avada Kedavra stopped all electrical activity in the body at once, it would be instantaneous. The brain runs on electricity, the heart, everything.
    There would be no signs or damage, just instant ceasing of all activity.
    Edit: I think the fear on the face is just knowing that spell is coming at you, just hearing a wizard start to utter that spell is going to put fear on your face.
    Also, I think the reason there’s so little known about the spell is because no one wants to be seen studying the dark arts, especially that spell. It would be taboo to spend the time understanding that spell.

      @darkracer1252 I don't think it is an electric spell. To stop the body from being conductive doesn't make the spell electric.
      But since you asked:
      Baubillious is classified as an electric spell.
      Also, when Voldemort stole the elder wand from the grave of Dumbledore, he shoots a large jet of bright crackling electricity into the sky. Like lightning.
      This is similar to a spell used by Gellert Grindelwald during his duel against Newt Scamander in 1926.

    Here is another idea:
    Maybe the spell cuts off all electrical impulses to and from the brain. This would instantly kill anyone, without changing facial features and would be near impossible to determine via autopsy as the spell would not physically damage the brain. Almost like grounding a live current.

    • @juanbenitolaiton7498
      @juanbenitolaiton7498 Рік тому

      thats not true, there would definitely be changes on the brain, in fact, every death posible leaves a trace that can be identified by a pathologist, shutting off all electrical activity makes all organs die in a short span of time as the heart wouldnt be pumping any blood. And the autopsy would reaveal signs of hypoxia, and ischemia, not only on the brain; but on the wohle body, ofcourse there would be any evidence of an underlying disease process. JKR just has no knowledge on medicine so what she wrote as the report of an autopsy is very very dumb, and imposible. The only thing i can think of is that the spell leaves you in a coma/vegetative state, where all your organs still work but youre brain dead. Which is being dead, as it is irreversible.

    Ok, so this is funny. I had this discussion with my wife and kids. I had the same theory and made a similar connection with horcruxes and Dementors. With Dementors, the soul is slowly pulled free, causing some agony in it's process and leaving parts still attached to the body, but Avada Kadavra snaps the soul from the body like a rubber band, causing the shock and terrified reactions. I also made the realization that the curse actually tears the souls from the body and holds them within the wand, which is why when Harry's wand and Voldemort's connected, Echoes of the deceased were temporarily pulled from the wand. And they weren't simply echoes of souls, but the actual souls, as they could communicate and interact almost like a ghost could.

    The connection between the soul removal by a dementor and Avada Kedavra is very interesting idea and I think you are right, for the most part. I still think that a dementor removes a soul completely but where Avada Kedavra rips the soul out of the body in such a violent way it does cause the organs to immediate shut down (Not like a heart attack or something, more like pushing the off-switch), a dementor is far more cruel and "carefully" detaches the soul from the body with almost a surgical precision, making sure that victim's body can live on as a husk. You could say that a dementor seperates the soul from the body with a "scalpel", while Avada Kedavra cuts it out like a "hunting knife". The damage it does to the organs isn't physical in nature but something else, something more mystical than can't yet be determined exactly. Though it seems to leave some magical traces as the ministry immediately knew the Riddles were murdered through magical means...
    And something I just realize but perhaps Avada Kedavra is the opposite of a basilisk gaze. We know from Myrtle Warren that when a basilisk looks at you (and uses its gaze), your body stops working, everything shuts down instantly and after that her soul left her body. With Avada Kedavra it could be the opposite, the soul is removed first, after which everything shuts down.

Maybe when you perform a killing curse the soul of your victim get pulled and trapped into the killer’s wand, or at least an echo of the soul is left in the wand.

      I think the best explanation for how avada Kedavra functions is tied to priori incantatem during the duel between Harry and Vodemort. It is said that Priori Incantatem makes the wands cast the spells that were casted with those wands in reverse and during this process a few shadows appear of people who were killed by Voldemort.
      So if reversing the spell makes shadows or soul like imprits of people killed by the curse appear, the curse itself maybe literally erases the ghost from the body and from everywhere gaining some kind of imprint which can be projected outwards during priori incantatem.

    • @tedferkin
      @tedferkin Рік тому

      i definitely think this line of reasoning should cast doubt on this reasoning from the video. 2 major points to consider
      1) The Priori Incantatem appears to should that some element of the soul appears to be pulled into the wand. In effect a pattern of the person and their life experience
      2) To make a horcrux, it appears that you have to kill. Why would this be, maybe because the act affects both the soul of the caster and the victim?
      We know the victim appears to lose at least part of their soul from the killing curse, and perhaps a little part of the casters soul can also become unstable enough to split off and be combined with the victims curse to bind it to an item.
      Lord Voldemort, I believe, had not been able to create any more horcruxes after attacking Harry (from what I understand Nagini was used with some peasant in Albania). We know from Triwizard Tournament, that all the souls he had previously killed, appeared during the dual, in fact it appears that's all Lord Voldemort had been casting recently. I could also speculate that perhaps you could simply use a nearby living vessel to create a horcrux (willing or forced). Nagini a faithful servant could have knowing agreed to become a horcrux, Harry most likely was too young know what was happening and allowed the small shard of Lord Voldemort's soul to attach itself to him.
      In fairness to us all, I have a suspicion that JKR didn't fully flesh this concept out, other than the parameters that the killing curse will kill you with no visible signs, and is uncounterable.

    On another note, I always felt this was too easy of a spell to cast to kill someone. It should have some cost to the caster when they successfully land it. Otherwise, why would a dark wizard/witch ever cast any other spell at an enemy? Why would have Bella played around with Molly Weasley? Molly successfully blocked several spells during their duel, so clearly Bella wasn't using the killing curse there, given they can't usually be blocked.

    Since the victims of the Killing Curse can be identified through the wand used to kill them, I wonder if their souls are pulled through the wand, leaving a permanent unique etch, like the rifling on a gun.
    Maybe the action of literally tearing one person’s soul from their body creates a ripple effect that tears the user’s soul as well, not unlike tearing a muscle when you put too much strain on it. Over time, the soul mends itself, unless you use the wound to tear that part of your soul out into another vessel.
    Now I’m wondering: could there be a variant of Avada Kedavra that is used to force out a fragment of your soul to latch onto another object? This could help explain why Harry became a horcrux. If Voldemort’s soul was already unstable, then it’s possible the ritual may have completed without the proper setup.
    Could a soul become acclimated to the Killing Curse, like how a muscle can be strengthened through training, or how an alcoholic develops a tolerance that requires more alcohol to reach the same level of inebriation? If so, could it be possible that exponentially more murders will be needed for each additional horcrux, to a point?

    This is something that bothered me for long time. I sticked with organs and soul but never decided about that. Now it makes sense. Of course muggles would recognise failure of organs and would know why Riddles died. So it was soul for me, but then, why would anybody die if dementors suck your soul and you would be still alive. Of course, husk of your former self, but still alive. And it all makes sense now. Dementors wouldn't suck all of your soul if they thrive on despair. I think this video is just extremely helpfull.
    But within all the praise I have doubtful question.
    Do you think dementors are inteligent enough to do that. Because I somewhat doubt inteligence of those creatures. Also, another question, do dementors have digestion system? As far as I know they don't need to eat, they just need cold, despair and depression. So don't you think they just suck all the soul from you, but you stay alive because they don't destroy it. Unlike avada kedavra, which would destroy your soul.

      It's proven that Avada Kedavra doesn't destroy the soul, as Lily, James, Dumbledore and presumably others were killed with it and were present in limbo and on the other side. Also, organ failure only leaves an impression because it fails over time or the cause of its failure is still present. The Riddles weren't just brain dead with beating hearts and functioning organs, they were clinically, fully, decomposingly dead, it's just that everything stopped at once and the cause was dissipated or otherwise undetectable magic.

If it were to stop the functions of the brain, the victim would instantly die because, without the brain to send signals, your heart wont beat, your diaphragm wont flex, hell, your bowels wont even function. As for the fear, well, thats not that hard to figure out. I saw a theory once that the killing curse shuts down the brain including the automatic functions such as sending the signal to your heart and lungs. • @Heathensauce
    @Heathensauce Рік тому +1

    Actually the books already explain this but it seems you missed it. You are entirely wrong. As stated in the books, they say, "All curses have an effect on the user when they are used. When Voldemort used the horcruxes to severe his soul, in turn he cursed the defence against the dark arts class. When horcruxes are created, they curse that which someone is bound to. Since Voldemort wanted to become a defence against the dark arts teacher before he was evil, he in turn cursed it when he gave it up for power. The reason why the curses are 'unforgivable' is because when you use them, you tear a piece of your soul off to power them. That's why Avada Kadavra is green. It's the color of a twisted evil soul. When someone uses it, not only do they tear a piece of their soul off similar to how horcruxes are made but they also twist the soul into something demonic. The reason why Voldemort died when he used Avada on Harry is because he used the curse so much and had so little of his soul left to use for the curse that it backfired. Not only that, since there wasn't enough of his soul to tear away Harry's, instead his soul latched onto Harry. That is the rare risk of using the curse. This is further explained when the books say Neville long bottom could have been Harry if Voldemort instead went to use the killing curse on him. Voldemort didn't know that if he was to use the curse again, he would lose his humanity since it was hanging on by a single thread. The crucio curse is even worse which twists the soul into madness. That's why Beatrix is so unhinged but she wasn't always that way. She used to be a lot different until she overused the curse on Neville's parents. She became corrupt and twisted. This is why they are called the unforgivable curses. You cannot gain back your soul once you use them." The books explain this very well in the Goblet of Fire when the fake Mad Eyes explains them and further clarified in the Deathly Hallows. I've read the entire series like 7 times as a kid. I'm surprised how little people know about these things.

    I think the curse does something related to the victim's soul. I was thinking about what happened when Harry's wand forced Voldemort's to show the spells it was used for. There Harry saw the people who got murdered by Voldemort in a soul like form. My point is that priori incantatem makes a wand to show the spells that it was used for. It shows a smaller version of the dark sign when they inspect Harry's wand after the Quidditch World Cup incident. I find it odd that it shows shades of the people who got killed instead of the spell itself when it was Voldemort's wand. My question is it was done so because Rowling needed to pull a miracle to save Harry's skin at the graveyard? Another question about this is what would we see if they used priori incantatem on a wand that cast The Imperius curse or any other spell that affects people but does not kill them?

    I am sooo curious about the death chamber in the U.S congress. Why take so much work to take someone's memory put it in some kind of water and slowly have the darkness take over the person? Why not just use Avada Kedavra? It's quick and it doesn't take the space that the death chamber seems to require. Is it just so there isn't a person committing the murder using a dark spell? But even so, the executioner still is the one that commits the killing with the use of the death chamber.
    This really makes me wonder if using the unforgivable twists a person's mind through long-term usage. Or perhaps the mindset required to kill someone with Avada kedavra is so dark and evil that it takes a dark wizard to so? But we see Snape kill dumbledore with the spell, is he a dark wizard? I mean spells in the HP are honestly very difficult to categorize between the lines of dark and light.

    You know one thing I never understood about this spell is, victims of the spell claim it is painless and all they saw is a bright light. So a painless killing curse is unforgivable, but lighting your enemies on fire, drowning them, turning them into stone then shattering it, that's perfectly acceptable.

    For all those people making bullshit about advada kavada summoning death and damaging the caster soul that is all billshit.There are 2 possible ways it works according to my understanding,first it is important to remember that the spell idea was created from a spell that originally was used to heal, the idea was it was cast on a person and it killed whatever was inside the person making them sick (illness).So the first way it could work would be that when it hits someone it stop all bodily functions(neurones,cellular division,enzymes synthesis,muscle contracts and relaxation ect) this would result in the body being perfectly fine but would kill the person instantly and if not instantly the person would perceived it as such because the can’t think due to brain activity stoping which eventually will kill the person, this is what I hope and believe is what is happening.The second way it could work is that the spell instantly and forcefully severs the connection between a persons body and soul thus killing them as a result.

    Hey everyone,
    Welcome to another installment of Harry Potter Theory. For today’s video, I’m going to be discussing one of the unforgivable curses. More specifically, I’m going to be discussing the avada kedavra and its properties. We know avada kedavra as the killing curse - the staple spell of Lord Voldemort- and seemingly the go-to spell for dark witches and wizards intent on putting an end to their enemies.
    Avada kedavra is a truly sinister spell that is classed as ‘unforgivable’ by the ministry of magic along with ‘crucio’ aka the cruciatus curse, and ‘imperio’ aka the imperius curse. These three curses were classified as ‘unforgivable’ in the year 1717- when the ministry of magic determined that they were entirely unsuitable to be freely used in the wizarding world. At the same time, the ‘strictest penalties’ were put in place and attached to their use. Before 1717, we can only assume that they were regarded just like any other spell. And while we don’t have any information to support this, there must have been some sort of catalyst that made the ministry realize how truly dangerous these spells were. Ulick Gamp was the minister for magic at the time the spells were outlawed, with just one year left in his term. Perhaps something happened, involving these spells, that threatened his position. I can only imagine the chaos that something like the imperius curse would cause in a government structure like that.
    The most notorious of the unforgivable curses- Avada kedavra- has a simple purpose: it causes the victim to instantly die. If you want to kill your victim, then this is the spell to use. Upon uttering the incantation, the spell creates a blindingly intense green bolt of light- and the victim simply drops dead. However, one thing that is never properly explained is HOW avada kedavra actually kills people. Unlike many other spells, avada kedavra leaves no trace at all - they just die. So, my question is- HOW do they die? What’s going on?
    I’m going to start by taking a look at the chapter ‘The Riddle House’ from the Goblet of Fire- the chapter that examines the murder of the Riddle family in Little Hangleton.
    “The police had never read an odder report. A team of doctors had examined the bodies and had concluded that none of the Riddles had been poisoned, stabbed, shot, strangled, suffocated, or (as far as they could tell) harmed at all. In fact (the report continued, in a tone of unmistakable bewilderment), the Riddles all appeared to be in perfect health - apart from the fact that they were all dead. The doctors did note (as though determined to find something wrong with the bodies) that each of the Riddles had a look of terror upon his or her face - but as the frustrated police said, whoever heard of three people frightened to death?”
    What this excerpt confirms entirely is that the killing curse leaves no physical trace- the Riddle family were undoubtedly killed with avada kedavra- but they didn’t have so much as a scratch on them. They were just..dead- and it happened instantaneously. So-what is the process? What does the spell do?
    I know that some people have made the argument that the killing curse simply causes the organs of the victim to stop working. Stopping the functions of certain organs, particularly the heart-inducing a heart attack, would be a surefire way of killing someone. However, IF this were true, then their deaths would have been a little bit more drawn out. Whatever the killing curse does happens INSTANTLY- which is why the victims still have the ‘look of terror’ on their face described by the police. Though it wasn’t something that they could run with, the best way that police at the crime scene could describe their deaths was that they appeared to be ‘frightened’ to death- but of course in the muggle world, that isn’t possible.
    So if it isn’t physical- then avada kedavra must have more of an ethereal effect. The ‘Soul’ is a common theme in Harry Potter- we see it with Voldemort, and we see it with dementors. Leveraging his own soul, Voldemort tried to fragment it in order to achieve immortality- and it resulted in his horcruxes-pieces of his soul that he embedded in to different objects to stay alive.

    Why is it that Dumbledore is never described as having a terrified look on his face in death? Or did I miss it? Does that mean that if you get killed by the AK curse when you have no fear of death then it doesn’t cause the same effect? That look of fear? Annnnnd, if you close your eyes before someone AK’s you, do you just look like you are sleeping? Or do your eyes shoot open regardless?!

    • @MrrGNB
      @MrrGNB 3 роки тому +3

      i think the look of fear described on the faces of the riddle family is simply due to being murdered and has nothing to do with how they are murdered. Which however means something way more interesting as normally after you die your muscles relax, meaning your mouth falls opens and your eyelids are no longer under tension causing your eyes to be open as well, as facial expression requires certain muscles to contract you cant really have an expression on your face after you die. And the stiffening of your muscles (rigor mortis) happens only after a few hours after death.
      So AK apparently causes instantaneous rigor mortis, or some other process by which your muscles dont relax after death. And depending on how much you want to read into the few lines of them appearing perfectly healthy, you might also include into that looking still alive and not pale, which is caused by blood draining out of your face and pooling at the lowest points of your body. So not only does AK freeze your muscles but also prevents your blood from moving after death, but also not changing as blood being solid would most likely have been noted in the report as that is way weirder than simply being dead.

      @@MrrGNB thanks, that’s actually a great response. Today marked the 13th anniversary of my friend passing away from SADS and so watching this reminded me of her autopsy report. She was 22yo and in perfect health, they couldn’t find anything wrong with her and yet she was no longer alive. So maybe the AK curse is just that, stopping your heart and taking your soul at the same time. Death really is a mystery ey!

    I like to think that when a wizard or with murders, they don't "split" the soul (this just reminds me of a loaf of bread, perfectly cut), but I think it makes more sense to consider it a FRACTURING of the soul, like a mirror. More murders = more fractures. A horcrux would take a fragment of that.

    There are plenty of spells in HP that could kill. Why is avada kedavra unforgivable though? In my theory it just straight up destroys ones soul and denies them an afterlife - thus making the spell unforgivable. This theory can be contradicted with the scene where the Horcrux in Harry is killed and he sees his deceased loves ones, but this could also just be in his head. I really like the dark touch this theory adds to the franchise. Voldemort is more evil and feared than we thought, the death of Sirius, James, Lily etc. Is even more tragic and the pressure on Draco to kill Dumbledore is inflated as well.
