The Wiz movie was actually an film adaptation from the Broadway show staring Stephanie Mills. Many people feel that she should have been cast as Dorothy in the movie as she was closer in age to the character. I prefer the stage version as opposed to this movie one. MJ was the best part of the film.

Agreed. Not only that...but Stephanie could easily hold her own while singing with Michael (nothing against Diana).

@@3912James the paradox is, without Universal money, the Motown budget likely would not have been able to afford to cast Jackson. They had to pay his dad 100K to get him to allow Michael then 19 to take the part. The deal Universal struck with Mowtown for production money was required Ross be cast in the lead. (This was a deal Ross had pitched to a Universal executive to take to Motown after she denied the part by the initial production team. She convinced them, they convinced Motown, and the budget for this movie became at least double what Motown had been able to get for it.
I would have loved a younger Dorothy, but I also like MJ and a lot of the sets and costuming of what we ended up with.
