  • I managed to record this habanera during a practice session. This one is marked both "lento" and "triste" which is interesting to me for a habanera. Sources say this was published in 1916.
Played on gut and rayon silk strings without fingernails 👍

Wonderful sound ,Tate. It is interesting that it's a 'slow and sad' habanera. I enjoyed the whole piece, but the major section is especially beautiful. I love the sound you are getting with those gut/silkl strings. I play on gut pretty often, but I've never tried silk basses. How would you say they compare to Aquila's bass strings?

Thanks for listening, William! Did I say gut and silk? These were gut and the rayon 900's from Aquila. But I do use their real silk basses too and love them. As far as I know they are the only company offering real silk basses for classical guitar. I will update the video description here.

@@tateharmann3057 Ah ok, yeah I like their Rayon basses a lot. From what I've heard there's not as noticeable of a difference between Aquila's bass strings and silk strings as there is between gut and nylon so I haven't been motivated to spend the extra money, haha.

@@williamwyse8528 The rayon are the closest to real silk that I've tried so far so you are definitely on the right track. If you do decide to try the real silk I think you will like them. My only gripe with them is that since silk is a natural material they can have slight intonation problems. It's rarely even anything that comes through on a recording, though.

I believe the Lento is referred only to the Introduction, then starts the Tempo de Habanera

Sounded great, Tate! Indeed, the title of "Melancholy" is apt. Could see this one as a movie credit background song, it's got that sort of pensive finality you find in those selections. 👏

Ah interesting observation - thanks! Definitely check out Alba's stuff - a lot of it is very simple but it's nice music. 👍
