  • Tikka rifles are well known for European quality and accuracy. The CTR is no exception and shot well with Outback Ammo 168gr MatchKings and Sako 102gr HP. The action is beautiful and smooth and there wasn't much I didn't like about this rifle.

    Wow that performed really well! The combination of the tikka action, barrel length and contour, magazine capacity, caliber choice/s and other factory options mean for $1500 you pay for it you get $1500 worth. Top review and shared on the forum for you mate! Cheers.

    Good review and very nice rifle. I'd like to offer a tip regarding charging your magazine. Rotate the magazine180 degrees so that when loading the ammo, the points are facing towards you and the heads away from you. Grasp five rounds at a time in your master hand (for me that's my right hand) and the mag in the other hand and place the rounds on the top of the mag one at a time, immediately before the mag lips, and push each one down and away from you with the thumb of the master hand. The positive control of the mag and ammo is superior to doing it the other way and a mag can be charged with ammo far quicker this way. It also ensure that all rounds are pushed to the rear of the mag fully. We had to do timed .308 mag filling back in the days of the FN and only 18 seconds was allowed for 20 rounds. To fail that test was to fail the entire weapon handling test. It's very easy to do once practiced and provides very positive control. As I said, just a tip. Thanks again for the great review.

    Note that the CTR uses Sako TRG magazines that are extremely expensive. The new line of CTR have polymer "plate" on the bottom of magazine that the CTR magazines won't fit TRG. Right now there are no CTR magazines on the market (Finland) and TRG magazines cost about 150 euros.

      Yes I have. Normal Tikka t3 magazines are available but not CTR. There are TRG-22 magazines but those are too pricey.

    I bought a stainless Tikka T3X lite up here in Alaska for hunting Sitka blacktails, Dall sheep, Black Bear, Caribou.
    Shoots great with my handloads (4350 and Barnes TTSX).
    I was surprised by all the plastic...plastic stock with no bedding block, plastic trigger guard, plastic magazine, plastic bolt release, etc.

      ***** Hey man, how many rounds can you get for rifles in Australia? And can you guys get AK mags and SKS stripper clips there easily as well as 7.62x39 ammo? I'm working on becoming a gunsmith sometime in the future, and I plan on creating a neat little varmint rifle series if I become successful. It'll take a while though.

    • @ozziereviews
      @ozziereviews  9 років тому +1

      What do you mean how many rounds? As in a limit or quantity available? We are lucky to have plenty of rimfire ammo and fairly good supplies of centre fire ammo too… as for the AK mags, yes you can get them, but with the laws here, most people are restricted to 10 round mags but there are still 30 round mags available if you have the correct licence...

    Great review, really detailed, great that you`ve looked at the nuts and bolts of the rifle - scope, bolt mechanism, handling, different ammunition, trigger pull, weight etc, I think this might be my next rifle here in NZ for the summer! Great that you knocked it around a bit to give a good idea of the feel of it. Will try and think of a good scope to go with this if the Burris was a wee bit too light, but sometimes can work with a compact scope with a little imagination on where the target is. Superb thanks.

    Wow that thing really shoots I know Tikka's are renowned for accuracy but 1/2inch groups with factory ammo thats amazing. I have never heard of such light ammo for the 308 but shooting like that it would make light work of ferals. Great review it would be good to see what it groups like @2-300m with a higher magnification scope.

    Love those Tikka rifles, my 6.5x55 is an absolute tack driver most accurate thing I have ever shot and I shoot A LOT of rifles, I have a Browning 7mm-08 that will give it a run for it's money with 120gr handloads (they both group in one hole at 100yd) but the Tikka is notably more accurate across the range of bullet weights.

    G'day ozzie, first of all, thanks for the review...
    Well, my CTR loves 130 gr federal ammunition, I've been getting under 0.5 inch groups at 100m and hitting plates at 500m (I did it yesterday actually).
    I got a vortex viper pst 6-24x50 ffp MRAD on it and changed the picatinny rail to a 20 MOA, so I can try 1000m next time I'm at range.
    I also ended up putting a muzzle brake on it and the recoil was reduced heaps which makes it even better to shoot.
    Once again, thank you for the review, good to see other aussies loving the CTR...

    Great review mate, I have 3 tikka's in my collection my third just arriving last week which happens to be the ctr in .308 my other two tikka's being a t3 lite .223 and a t3 forest fluted stainless .270 for my first two I tried many brands of factory ammo as I don't have anytime to reload myself and I have found that the sako ammo has been giving me the best results, people may think I'm talking bs but I shoot 55 grain softs out of my .223 to 500 plus metres and group less then an inch and 145 grain hollow points out of my .270 to 800 plus grouping about an inch best factory ammo for tikka rifles as far as I'm concerned yet to try my ctr as I'm waiting for my scope to come in.

    Canada's buying the Sako version for it's Canadian Rangers for use in the Arctic. The big difference is a wooden stock replacing the nylon stock, the reason being the temperature extremes in the Arctic from 39 C(about 100 F) in the summer to -51 C(about -51 F) in the winter. The Rangers will be using this weapon in place of their Second World War Lee-Enfield rifles, part are getting scarce for them. They also be able to use the weapon for survival hunting. Canada's bought the .308 Winchester version.

    Nice job!
    Thinking more about it since the outback is an SMK perhaps that’s more of a precision/match factory load. I had forgotten all the outback I find here is more like the Winchester, being just a basic fmj bullet. Granted much hotter loaded :)

    Great in dept nonsence review. I have the tactial 24 inch barrel in 223, however the compact is a little lighter and comes standard with a tactial bolt handle. I had to source at some expence a replacement similar type tactical bolt knob for my tikka. It also comes standard with a metal trigger guard and magazine, which is just plastic and polymer on my one. Could have a conversion done on my one but again quiet expensive. [Ireland]

    I'm looking at the 308 Tikka or the Lithgow la102 in 308 for my first hunting rifle. Question; what is the maximum ethical range of these guns to kill deer, or pigs. I have seen you shoot the LA102 to over 1000yards but to humanely hunt what would you consider is the maximum range for a considered skilled shot?
    Regards Dave.

    Had a look at one today. $1600 for blue barrel and $1750 for stainless. I've got a 7600 pump in .308 I use for pigs at the moment but it really shits me, so I'm after something better.

    • @Splunkzop
      @Splunkzop 9 років тому

      ***** The short barrel doesn't really do it for me, but what has really turned me off it is the tiny magazines. 4 rounds in amongst a mob of pigs is just silly.I bought an after market 10 round mag and my favourite hollow point rounds get caught. It's so frustrating that I just gave up using it.Yeah, I know it isn't the rifles fault and I should start reloading with ballistic tips to fix the magazine problem but I'm just over it now.

    • @ozziereviews
      @ozziereviews  9 років тому +1

      I understand, but if it were me, I'd be looking around at other aftermarket mags to get the rifle functioning properly… they are a great rifle and very accurate I found, but each to their own, if you're over it so be it, but look at it as a bit of a challenge mate and then when you have fixed it, think of how much satisfaction you will feel… that's just my take on it

    hey ozzie mate great video, bad about the wind at the end.
    would love to see some more tikka videos and even some sako videos if your getting them from berreta.
    quick question what are your thoughts on a 9.3x62mm for sambar hunting in Vic ?

    • @ozziereviews
      @ozziereviews  9 років тому

      Yeah when I did the editing and heard the wind, I was pretty annoyed but not much I can do about it now… As for the 9.3x62, there's some serious knockdown in that cartridge! The ammo isn't cheap, so I'd be more inclined to go for a 308 or 30-06, but that's just my view on it… what was making you think about the 9.3x62?

    • @lacmax6690
      @lacmax6690 9 років тому

      well i've already got a 270win and i wanted something that's a bit bigger but i also wanted to skip past a 308 or 30-06. i've had my ears open when at the range and i've read quite a few books and what gets thrown around a lot is a heavy projectile at somewhat slower velocities for sambar. any other suggestions from you ?
      good old Ken Pearce who wrote 'walking them up' did his sambar hunting with a 458 win mag.

    I just bought mine and the Finland quality is absolutely amazing.
    From the thread to the pad everything is very well done on this riflescope.
    Perfect ingenious compromise 20" semi heavy barrel for tactical,range & ALSO hunt use.
    Lot of feathures on it, only need to fit the riflescope and eventually a bipod.
    I can't wait the delivery of the riflescope and the (rotative) bipod.
    Thank's to Tikka (Sako) for this great rifle at a raisonable price

      Can';t wait receive the optic 4X16-44 SF IR Mil Dot (tomorrow if everything go well > the Christmas day-) & the (rotative) bipod...
      After, good amunition with high BC (Balisitc Coeficient) and test to determine the best one.
      I will tell you about that -)

      @oly1207 8 років тому

      +ozzereviews I received the 4-16-44 SF IR Mil Dot the day of Christmas, it couldn't be better!
      With the mounts (2X3 torx each mount) i get since i bought the rifle in same time, i am glad taht it fit perfectly on it (height & and adjusting ocular/eye).
      The riflescope (Triple duty :Tactical, range & hunting) come & complete perfectly the Tikka CTR which is also a compact 3 use (Tactical, Range & hunt) as the riflescope does.
      So NICE on it and in the same spirit & use as the rifle can do.
      Can't wait to shoot with it as well as it's beautiful now (i need to make pictures & video of it).
      Then now i wait the amunition and bipod to GO & test all of that together (rifle,riflescope & mount, amunition).
      Did you try Hornady (not whitetail as on vidéo) amunition as Superformance SST (165 grains) or other Hornady which are also correct for hunting medium/big game in these around weight bullet or average?
      I usually use Hornady amunitions (never been disapointed on diferent calibers with these i chose on each one, but superformance like medium or long barrel as the pouder is progressive and specific in Superformance series ton increase velocity

    Hi Ozzie
    Always a great fan of your reviews !
    A question I am interested in buying a 308, kind of one do it all: hunting (%30) and target shooting (%70), I did short listed this Tikka T3 CTR, the Lithgow 102 (looks really rugged) and the Howa 1500 Varmint (almost half the price so will help putting a decent scope on top...but is it any good compare to the 102 and CTR) Any recommendations ?

    • @ozziereviews
      @ozziereviews  6 років тому +1

      Lithgow using the Outback Ammo 168gr match is hard to beat for the overall price but if you want larger mag capacity the CTR would be the way to go.

    • @countercivilization

    Hi Ozzie
    I've recently purchased a new 30-06 and Leupold CDS VX3i 3.5-10×40 with optilocks to match. I've been told by others to zero at both 100 and 200m. So I thought I'd ask you as I know you've got alot more experience at this stuff. Also what would you think to be a good projectile for hunting deer with this combo. I mainly just want to get everything correct for the CDS.
    Cheers Rob

    • @ozziereviews
      @ozziereviews  7 років тому +1

      I'd zero it at 100, so the CDS dial can go up 2,3,4 etc etc. I take it it's a hunting rifle? So you won't really be shooting it out past 200 unless you're having some fun at the range, so I'd be testing various factory ammo to see which is the most accurate (and suitable for hunting) and stick to that with your CDS dial...

      @SKMcorporation 9 років тому

      I affraid then there is no left handed version from CTR. Having eny wrong handed rifle, can be quite difficult to operate smoothly. You can always go in shop and try how they operate, and then deside.
      Remember then you propably have that rifle many years now on, so don't hurry too much.
      You can get t3 hunter fluted in left handed version and its a very nice rifle to shoot.
      Also all Lite versions have left handed versions if you like black syntetic stocks.
