I'm Brazilian and I took a course in food science in uni. In Brazil most milk is sterilized by UHT (ultra high temperature) method, where the milk is exposed to super high temperatures for a few seconds and that kills off any germs. Also the packaging of the boxes is made of several layers of protective materials that keep out contaminants. The sterilization and packaging guarantees that the milk can be safely stored unrefrigerated as long as it's unopened. There is also the option of pasteurized milk, which is typically sold in bags, and those have to be kept in the fridge since pasteurization is a less efficient sterilization method and the bags are more susceptible to microbes.
Yup. Historically, in Brazil, pasteurized milk was bought in bakeries (padarias/padocas), and needed to be boiled, just like raw milk. The main distribution system got adapted to UHT milk because it lasts longer... In a poor country, that solution helps distribution, and saves lives. It's an exchange we had to get used to. But I agree with our Canadian friends,... Cow milk quality in Brazil tends to be low, very low, especially because there are all types of diluted stuff, to make prices cheaper.
Some milk producers who are evil and profit-oriented add dangerous chemicals that are a threat to public health, especially to children. Some were arrested for good! Leitissimo and Atalaia are my favorite brands.
Pão de Açúcar is the equivalent to Loblaws in Canada, so it is where you'll find imported goods and among the most expensive prices of retail chains of Brazil
@@antoniohenriquelopes5880 That is far from true, I myself spent a couple of years living in Toronto on a minimum wage and I could never afford doing groceries at Loblaws every month...
I'm from the south of Brazil and that's true, 30R$ in 500g of low quality coffee it's very expensive, 2 or 3 times more than usual, passion fruit for 20R$ per kg in seasoning the same. But some prices like the olive oil are pretty good, here in Santa Catarina it's more expansive.
Calabresa is a type of LINGUIÇA instead of a SALSICHA. In Portuguese we make a difference between HOT DOG SAUSAGES/FRANKFURTERS and LINGUIÇAS, which are more akin to Italian Sausages/Chorizos. Salsicha is a processed, pre-cooked sausage with a smooth, uniform texture, commonly used in hot dogs. It is made from finely ground meat that is emulsified before being encased. Linguiça, on the other hand, is a coarser, seasoned sausage that is typically raw and must be cooked before eating. It often has more distinct spices and can be smoked or cured, offering a wider variety of flavors."
little tip for buying Calabresa sausage. If in the label/package there is the word "tipo" like this: "Linguiça tipo Calabresa" it means that this sausage is a mixture of chicken and pork meat and it is cheaper generally. If there isn't the "tipo" word: "Linguiça Calabresa", is supposed to be 100% pork meat.
The milk is not ultra processed. UHT milk is milk that has undergone a process of pasteurization at ultra-high temperatures (UHT), which gives it a shelf life of several months. It's difficult to find fresh milk at supermarkets, it is easier to find at "padarias".

Since you're going to be in São Paulo for a while, there are two specialty supermarkets I would highly recommend. Empório Daruma, at Rua Augusta 1917, is an Asian supermarket on five floors. Casa Santa Luzia, about four blocks away, is at Alameda Lorena 1471. A European store with an emphasis on Italian specialties, difficult to find elsewhere. It's always crowded. A good way to explore the very international nature of São Paulo.

You guys went to one of the most expensive supermarkets in Brazil! Try Assaí, Spani or Atacadao. They don't have all that variety, but the prices are about 30% cheaper.
Right across the Avenue in front of that Market you will find RICK DOCES , it`s a candy and snacks store , a good place to buy a lot of different stuff for your video . Paçoca , Sonho de Valsa , Bis , Doce de Leite , cocada , etc.
Yep, calabrese sausage was created in Brazil by Italian immigrants who were inspired by salsiccia di Calabria, a traditional sausage from the Calabria region.
Go to Agua Branca Park (small.park comparing to Ibirapuera Park), close to downtown with the baby. Enjoy the nature, chickens everywere horses, trail and a small aquarium too.
unfortunatelly the fabricated chocolates in general in brazil suffered a big change in the last decade and isn't as good as before (they changed a lot of their products to make them more profitable, like putting cheaper components), very sweet too. you should try: goiabada, doce de leite (i think you guys tried when you visited Minas Gerais), paçoquinha/paçoquita, trento (i think is one of my favorite brand of cheap chocolate), cocada. there are some sweet recipes that are very known here (that you can find in padarias, restaurants): passion fruit mousse (mousse de maracujá), bolo de rolo (or another version like rocambole), pamonha ( sweet or salty version), arroz doce (sweet rice), doce de abobora.
yeah definitely, i couldn't think of a single sweet to recommend from the market shelf. they should really get more traditional or homemade sweets instead of ultra processed ones, those are REALLY bad nowadays.
@@vitormachadof Yes, and unfortunately, the law is not as strict for chocolate (and other snacks) as it is in other countries. We lose a lot because they are constantly changing the composition and most of the time they reduce the quality. This is noticeable to people who consume the same brand of chocolate in another country and realize that the quality is different even though it's the same chocolate/brand
Yeah, they should probably go to a bombonoiere and buy more traditional candy. Maria mole, doce de abobora, suspiro, doce de amendoim (if they arent alergic to peanuts), paçoca (same), novidade/ovinho de aranha (also same), cocada, etc... But imo, they should also try some chocolate brands like diamante negro and bis. As well as some other stuff like biscoito de polvilho. Cant remember anything else tbh.

Brazil is the biggest coffee producer in the world. That's why we have so many options. Is a national treasure. Most of the population drinks at least 1 cup of coffee every single day.
You can usually find fresh milk near the yogurt aisle or the butter dairy refrigerated aisle. I agree with you guys, fresh milk is the best! But here milk is either in plastic bottles or plastic bags, not cartons.
Amazing couple, ops, now amazing family, back to our beloved country ! Have a great trip ! Great prices comparison, although, as others commented, Pao de Acucar market is expensive.
Hey! I’m so happy to find you guys! I just moved back to my hometown, Arraial do Cabo, after living in Toronto. I’ll definitely miss Canada! These bananas are called Banana Ouro (Gold Banana). You can gently squeeze one, kind of like rubbing your hands together to warm them up, and the banana will start to turn into a creamy texture, almost like a banana paste. It’s a fun way to eat them!
For fruits and vegetables, I would advise going to street fairs close to your location and buying it there on the days they are setup - the price is usually much better. Fruits and Veggies at supermarkets are getting CRAZY expensive lately
Local snacks: Piraque brand has lots of sweet and savory snacks, the guava one is good (goiabinha), Lacta chocolate box, pacoquita you already know, Cheetos requeijão, peanut eggs (ovinhos Elma chips), Ebicen shrimp, Guaravita, Mupy strawberry

You guys went to one of the most expensive supermarkets in Brazil! Try Assaí, Spani or Atacadao. They don't have all that variety, but the prices are about 30% cheaper.
Usually fresh milk is near to yogurt section. The cheap picanha was a pork picanha, the real picanha is much more expensive
Right across the Avenue in front of that Market you will find RICK DOCES , it`s a candy and snacks store , a good place to buy a lot of different stuff for your video . Paçoca , Sonho de Valsa , Bis , Doce de Leite , cocada , etc.
As people already commented, Pão de Açucar is one of the most expensive grocery stores in the country. :D
Bear in mind, Pão de Açúcar is overall expensive.
Calabrese means either made in the Calabria region of Italy or made according in the tradition of Calabria, Italy.
Yep, calabrese sausage was created in Brazil by Italian immigrants who were inspired by salsiccia di Calabria, a traditional sausage from the Calabria region.
yup... but "calabresa" sausage is somewhere in between italian calabria sausage and portuguese paio
Que mercado é esse? Nunca tinha visto um tão caro assim!!!
Peixe de filé de tilápia empanado e frito sem escamas é o melhor ...
Amazing vídeo guys !
Every supermarket have fresh milk for sure. But is close to yogurt
I really appreciated this video. Thank you
Go to Agua Branca Park (small.park comparing to Ibirapuera Park), close to downtown with the baby.
Enjoy the nature, chickens everywere horses, trail and a small aquarium too.
gringos looking at a supermarket:😃

unfortunatelly the fabricated chocolates in general in brazil suffered a big change in the last decade and isn't as good as before (they changed a lot of their products to make them more profitable, like putting cheaper components), very sweet too.
you should try: goiabada, doce de leite (i think you guys tried when you visited Minas Gerais), paçoquinha/paçoquita, trento (i think is one of my favorite brand of cheap chocolate), cocada. there are some sweet recipes that are very known here (that you can find in padarias, restaurants): passion fruit mousse (mousse de maracujá), bolo de rolo (or another version like rocambole), pamonha ( sweet or salty version), arroz doce (sweet rice), doce de abobora.
yeah definitely, i couldn't think of a single sweet to recommend from the market shelf. they should really get more traditional or homemade sweets instead of ultra processed ones, those are REALLY bad nowadays.
I'm Brazilian living in Vancouver. With all respect to Canadian culture, I have to say, I really miss Brazilian food and fruits.
Moro fora do Brasil desde 1981, agora estou em Toronto, a mesma coisa sempre saudade da terrinha
As brazilian is amazing for me, what surprises the foreigns. It is very interesting to discover the difference between the cultures!

But here milk is either in plastic bottles or plastic bags, not cartons.
wow! you guys are back in Brazil! missed you guys and your videos sooo much “in Brazil”
Amazing couple, ops, now amazing family, back to our beloved country ! Have a great trip ! Great prices comparison, although, as others commented, Pao de Acucar market is expensive.
1:39 We call this brand banana-maçã (apple banana) and we use to feed babies with it
Look for a market called Assai Atacadista, the prices are half that 😊
Food in Brazil is the best in the world.
Bom dia , amo supermercado ❤ 🇧🇷
I love Brazilian fruits🇧🇷😃
eita voltaram que bomm
Best snack - paçoca
Should try - pé de moleque e pipoca doce (sweet popcorn in a pink bag)
damn, awesome video! very cool visuals too
Have you ever tried toasting a slice of panettone with butter in a frying pan? It's really good!!!!
Muito legal assistir vocês!
Hey Guys. That's exactly the market that I buy my monthly shop. Pão de açúcar at brigadeiro Luís Antônio / sp. Cool that you guys were here.
Welcome back, guys.
