I live in Pgh and played Oakmont about 9 years ago. It was just a fun round with a relaxed group and I told the caddie and my group that I was going to play everything down and putt everything out--I wanted to get my money's worth and see what the course was like. Well, it did not disappoint. I had 1 penalty and had 7 3-putts and shot 83. The rough was insane. You have to hit the fairway in order to have chance at a decent approach. What is most remarkable about this course and watching the 94 Us Open, and then 07, and this is how much the course changes. The members are amazingly dedicated and committed to improving and making this course insane. It has changed so much over the years and it is still insanely hard. These guys are playing the 11th by going over to the 10th fairway!!! That was never a valid strategy when I played there. Just crazy to see this course evolve.
This was a great match. This Grieser kid has some pop for sure and he can make putts. New school swing theory vs more traditional. Amazing how far they can hit it with a cut now. Piot's game is a bit more refined at this early point.
Thanks for the coverage USGA from Denmark. A super match and congratulations to both finalists. Oakmont really can make a great golfer look quite average at times - and to think was it being kind 😳
Have been rooting for Piot (even though I don't know either for them) because of his amazing swing. Well played for both players, some of us can only hope to play at their level. I'm sure we would see both of them on tour in the future.
Great match! Greaser had a little bit of a better swing. But Piot kept his ball more below the hole on those super fast greens. What a tournament!!! We'll see both again at Augusta.
They look close to equi-distant...but if what you're saying is true the reason is that Greaser would be standing directly where Piatt's ball is marked and would be putting indents into the ground there.
@@brad1368 idk about equi-distant... looks like a good foot between the 2 in relation to the hole...but yeah that makes sense why piot went first. greaser totally missed an chance there piot gave him a great line!
In 1986 I went to shoals creek to play golf. The US amateur was starting that Thursday. I was 20. Dang I couldn’t get on. I thought I might stick around. Inside the clubhouse I overheard the name of an amateur that hadn’t showed. I won’t say his name. I pretended to be him. I weasel my way through the formalities. My clubs were counted. I signed a half dozen papers and in 40 minutes I stood at number one ready to tee off. I was supposedly from a school in S Dakota. Holy crisp. I was third to tee off. I topped and hozzle-rocketed the first tee into the crowd not even off the end of the tee. I made the green in four. On my 4th shot from 80 yards out o grabbed my shoulder and started walking to the car.
Man those greens have some slope huh!!!! Well done Piot. Got a feeling we will see more of Greaser in the future. Much better technique and love his thousand yard stare. Like a Wild West gun slinger!!!!
23:27 - the pressure of matchplay . Desperate to get that putt conceded , a stare of ‘I gave yours!’ In vain. A tough 3putt. Both players played great but Piot a deserving winner (he didn’t get any more breaks than Greaser), once 3-down he played great Vs Greaser when 3-up made unforced errors playing too aggressively . Good careers ahead of them .
@@UNCbasketball610 you could be right of course. But the build up to Both putts and Greaser concedes Piot’s then Greaser didn’t seem at all prepared to make the putt back. Set up then stepped off , didn’t see that earlier in his putting on front 9. Love matchplay drama!
I thought the difference in the match was due to the caddies. Both players were relatively equal but Piats catty provided lots of support and encouragement whereas axis caddy only carry the bagAnd was mostly silent.
Yah definitely greaser’s caddy was a local kid who is a member at oakmont. He really couldn’t help him that much besides with the lines off the tee and distances sense he doesn’t know greasers game that much😂
Good for this Piot kid, Followed Greaser yesterday kid was pretty cocky, that arrogance went away quick after that 3 hole lead evaporated on the back 9, this was about as easy as you will ever see Oakmont unfortunately they had 6 inches a rain last 2 days,
He comes across cocky for sure, but most of it is his personality and walk. You may not have seen all the coverage when on site, but his interviews and relationship with his brother and family say different; quite a special story. Piot played great on the back nine and it is easy to make bogies at OCC regardless of weather; so Kudos to Piot. His story is also really good as is many of these young up and coming stars. Agreed It was a bummer to see OCC so tame but please give credit to both and do not judge like that. Thanks.
High Level amateurs like these 2 are just as good as the guys playing on the Mini Tours and KFT. Them playing a 279 Par 3 is tough but expected since it is a tough layout and is also the same layout the US Open played a few years ago. You gotta remember these 2 are getting an invite/exemption into the Masters and US Open for being the finalists at the US Am. Also, all High Level Amateur Tournaments like the US Amateur, Western Amateur, Sunnehanna Amateur are played at 7000-7500 yards and the winners will still shoot around -15 for 4 days. This is nothing new for them. A 279 yard par 3 is annoying but not surprising.
to the USGA about club length ruling....do as you will sounds good to me. BUT....if you want to make a difference with distance...MAKE THE PROs FIND THEIR OWN BALLS LIKE THE REST OF US. they can just WAIL at it with almost no consequence. having people find their ball for them. make them prove their skill and make them keep the ball in the fairway. Really enjoy this type of coverage and would love to see more matches filmed like this. Well done Mr Piot, well deserved I thought 👍🏻
Congrats to James and Michigan State! And Austin was a tremendous player and competitor, gracious in defeat.

Amazing match at the toughest course on the U.S. Open circuit.
Incredible resolve from Piot, 3 down at the turn, and proceeds to win 2 / 1... Tremendeous!

Yes. The USGA sets it up more difficult for the US Open. They narrow the fairways and speed up the greens. The rough is higher too.
Awesome match!!! Both played well
After being 3-up at the turn, that was a tough one to lose.
