You guys should have Scott Storch on here! That guy has had so many hit records... And he’s got an incredible story of rags to riches; back to rags, and back to riches. It’ll be a good episode!
Nope the real fathers of trap are the ones who actually grew in the trap and made that shit mainstream, you give credit to those guys who started making those beats first
I wish he would explain a little more. Being secretive about your techniques, I get it, but nobody's actually gonna take your place, I mean you're Mike Dean man
That's just it people like that aren't technical they just go by ear...apply until it sounds right move on. This is what meant when he said "it aint rocket science" If you ever get the chance to shadow engineers in industry sessions with top or really good artists, the first thing you'll notice is how good the performance and vocal are before the engineer touches it and it makes the engineer sound phenominal. Less experienced artists... gotta use a lot of processing
as someone who does what he does and i just discovered that I do. It's almost liek it's trial and error and you just get it to do whatever sounds good.
Great to finally see an interview with Mike Dean, known of him for quite some time. Own and love his Gainstation plugin from Acustica Audio. Also big respect to Papa Trawick!
Wow, what a great start to the show. Herb is right about doing activity's outside of music. I noticed the more articles and books I consume, the stronger my lyrics are in my songs. Also, Every aspiring producer should read Michael Beinhorn's "Unlocking Creativity"! It's fantastic and the only book that covers this aspect of the production process!
He told them. As loud as possible before distortion, but that applies for all frequencies. He also said he masters twice, once while mixing and then remove effect before final export, then master all tracks together to even them out.
I just meant he didn't break down the exact plugins he used to get sicko mode as loud as possible. I don't blame him I just thought it was funny because Pensado wanted that info haha.
he clipped the converters on his console after summing out the master which gave the track an analog soft-clip saturation effect which warmed up the low-end and glued the mix
Multiple limiters, soft clipping, eq, compression, saturation. Has a lot to do with EQ curve after multiple layers of limiting, and feeding that into a final brick wall. I overshoot commercial mixes regularly.
growing up as a CFL fan and now a growing engineer and enthusiastic Pensado's Place devotee, really happy to finally see this addressed on the show. appreciate what your dad did for Black visibility in Canada so much, and love what you're doing for the audio professional community now.
summing is when you send all your tracks in a mix to a summing mixer (like the neeve 8816) then send that back to your daw to get a digital to analog conversion sound. had to look it up too haha shit seems way too expensive though. ill wait till i can afford it to at least try it out.
Amazing podcast, i really love how smart Mike Dean is and its super incredible how i just understand 2% of wtf he is talking about because he is speaking in codes and waves
I was a runner while mike was at the studio i worked at. mike is cool AF and talented AF but he also out smokes any person I know. Man bought the entire swisher sweet supply from the nearest CVS
Don’t let them do you like that Dave!!! Also, mike is talking lots about widening reverbs and panning image yet his mixes translate to mono so we’ll. Where do you find your many small victories in the mix for mono comparability ?
I wonder if they'll KEEP the burn🔥 mark on the chair for nostalgia/reference purposes or will Mike D replace the chair/s?!?!🤔 Either way, he's a legend. I've been listening to him for almost 3 decades. It would be an honor to sit in that 🔥 chair.

OG rap-a-lot Mafiosi
Lets just hope he didn't mix Nav's Vocal on YOSEMITE loool
he mixed astroworld entirely
I wonder if it was intentional 😂
NAV’s vocal was recorded poorly, not much he could’ve done.
It wasn't Mike's fault. It was most likely a recording error so the person to blame is the recording engineer I guess
Nav cant rap... nothing a recording or mixing engineer can do about it
These interviews need to be an hour long
"let the high create one for you" 🤣 and he goes off!! this interview is OG
love it hes wearing that [RODEO] Shirt
