I think a lot of people only compare the editing capabilities of Lightroom and Capture One. But for me the biggest difference is the workflow when shooting tethered and the RAW processor. The way Capture One interprets the RAW data from my D850 is just way cleaner than LR. For me Lightroom always looks noisier at similar brightness levels. And when shooting tethered Captur One is just awesome. It's fast, reliable and very customizable, depending on the shoot. As a digital operator or assistant at bigger shoots, I like how fast you can work in Capture One to check sharpness, focus, light... as the images come in. You can apply edits that get applied to the images as soon as they come in, so you can show clients a preview in their brand style right on set. You can change the name for incoming images anytime. I use it a lot when changing products to photograph or when taking portraits of multiple people. And the best feature that I'm still missing in LR is the overlay feature. You can take an image and overlay it on your live view or the images you view (non destructive). We used it at shoots to frame for a specific page layout, for advertisements, for magazine covers and so on. Great when the clients are on location and want to preview the images in the desired layouts. You don't have to open extra programs like Photoshop, but can overlay it in Capture One in real-time. We managed to have the clients select a lot of their keeper images this way, while still being mid shoot (they still got a gallery later to select carefully, but this selection often matched the inital selection on location). What it also helps with, is when you need to reproduce a specific angle on a product. We sometimes had customers at the studio that sent in products, that they needed photographed exactly in the same angles from a shoot we did months prior for other products. Using the files from the previous shoot we could reproduce the same body + lens combination, overlay the old file on the live view and set up the tripod to closely match the previous angles. It's a pain in the ass sometimes, but it makes it less of a guessing game. Or if you needed to match a set design exactly, you could do the same thing, overlay a previous shot and play real-life 'match the shapes' :D
Most of the photographers on UA-cam I watch use Lightroom and I believe that Lightroom has now finally added a Luma curve too. I sometimes wish that I had a more reliable sky selection in CaptureOne, and generative fill looks tempting for cleaning up some blemishes that C1's healing tool doesn't do. Still, I love working in C1 and it's great for highlights and shadow recovery. I also really like the style brushes.
Having the option of working in a session, which is a separate fully contained project that can be moved to a different computer including from a Mac to a Windows PC is a game changer for me. You have the option to use a catalog but for my professional work I like having individual Sessions for different clients. The tethered workflow is the best in the industry too.
Hi Sergio, I do mostly landscape photography and I have switched from LR to C1 a couple of years ago and I love the sessions workflow for all my trips and I loo the fact that the session is a "bundle" that you can move anywhere (ext SSD, NAS, etc) and it still works without re-refercing files like a LR catalog does... The color capabilities are much much better than LR and I now use the roundtrip to PS just to remove objects... if C1 added a better "remove" tool it would be the perfect package for me... and don't get me started on the layout customization, game changer!!! Massimo, Italy
A better clone stamp would probably remove 99% of my Photoshop workflow as well, but I will say these new Beta features are quite a game changer! New video out on the 24th diving into the new tools.
I switched to Capture One just a few days ago, and it's worth mentioning that I'm a wedding photographer. The main reason for the switch was that my Lightroom catalog had slowed down, and I found that Lightroom couldn't handle Fuji RAF files properly, especially when it came to color grading. Capture One performs much better in this area. Even RAF files from my Fuji X-T3 and X-T5 can be edited using one style (preset) with only minor tint adjustments. Overall, I'm happy with the change.
I was long time Lr Classic user. It seemed fine until Capture One. What tipped me over to C1 1) Brightness slider. 2) Levels. 3) I now daily drive Phase One and integration of those two is amazing. 4) The speed in which it handles large libraries. LrC just grinds to a halt when you open large sets of really high res (16bit) images. But over all speed and ease of use is what got me to switch.
Hi Sergio: I am new to your channel, and I have subscribed. I really appreciate that you have created and shared this material. Very informative. My only issue with C1 and it is very small, is that I wish there was a setting to "auto-collapse" or LR Solo Mode for the various editing tools. I am looking forward to see more of your content. Cheers, Keith (Barrie, Ontario)
2 things I miss in Capture One: on the photo management side, the impossibility to select 2 or more non-contiguous folders to move or manipulate them using ctrl ou shift keys, like virtually any application or any modern operating system does, but CO1 does not, for no reasonable reason I can see. On the photo editing side, the inexistent editing history that we can retrace and edit, again for no sensible reason. When contacted, the reply is "not on the roadmap"... why, sure not technical reasons. Such an excellent application (the best in interface and workflow) but It surprises me the neglect and self indulgence the company seems to put on these two features, I can't really understand. Thanks for the video, really useful and well done.
On my 27 inch Mac, L/R ground down to slower than a snail. As soon as I swapped over to C1, the difference was night and day. It took me a while to work out how to use C1, but now it's going well. My only disappointment is that I hear L/R has lots of great AI stuff, where it automatically selects people and stuff like that. I'm waiting for C1 to introduce that.
as I moved my whole library (70k pictures) capture one have forgot all the masks on adjustment layer. So every bit of cloning and healing has to be done ones again... horror. do somebody have any idea how to rectify the problem?
If image quality is what you're after, Phase backs are where it's at. At my scale, I simply can't justify owning one and having it depreciate, but rental houses are always a solid option if you want to play around with the files for yourself. I will say, as "cameras" they aren't that great, but as image-processing sensors, there's nothing better.
Man I want Capture One but I don't work consistently enough. All my editing is done between 3 separate programs. Capture One does it all in one program! I think for what I do, DXO would probably be best and more cost efficient. But I don't want to pay for that yet lol. If photography was my main source of income, Capture One is a no-brainer! Expensive mic stand lol!!
You can choose to buy C1 outright like DXO as well, but the constant support and updates from C1 make it all the more worth it for me. Much like my mic stand, it’s not cheap but it does a lot of things! Loll thanks for watching Tommy ✌️
I don’t touch on it very much, but that could be a topic for its own video! Organizing sessions is streamlined and free of clutter, you can rename individual files as they come in, and you can easily star/flag/grade them as well. Took some getting used to coming from Lightroom, but tethering to CaptureOne is a total breeze.
@@sergiopstudio For me this is prob. THE reason for Lightroom. I dont shoot tethered too often though and normally only to have a larger preview. I then still upload the raw filed from the SD card. But would be interessting to see how manage your files 👍
oh got ya! One of my favourite things about tethering is that I never use my SD cards, and file transfers happen instantly. I'll use this info in a future video, thanks Elias!
I appreciate your video, and info, but it's hard to really see what you're doing with the color editing because of the color grade you put on the video.
Thanks for the input Phil! The grade affects only my angle and not the screen-capture, but I agree that the adjustments were subtle and quick! I'll see what I can do for the next one ✌️

I've used Capture One before I learned Lightroom some 18 years ago. Today, I just find that people who like Capture One don't know how to use Lightroom better. I would challenge anyone to do a wedding faster and better in Capture One than I can in Lightroom. Also, I use Smart Objects exclusively, so that immediately omits Capture One. The interface is odd to learn, and adding to the catalog (just to correct an image) can be slow as death (with a 1000+ image wedding, as example). I poke my head in every few years out of necessity, but I've never much cared for it.
