The Tielman Brothers - while I grew up with them, outside of the Netherlands and Germany they are the greatest band no one has ever heard of.

Hi Fil, I'm excited to tell someone, SO I just bought my first guitar today and took my first lesson at age 61!! I'm a lefty, so I had to order my Taylor GS Mini online. I was a professional drummer for over 40 years, but tinnitus got the best of me about nine years. I've had such a VOID inside me for the last 9 years. Well today I feel like a big kid again!! I I've been listening to guitar players my whole life of course being in bands, but also through all walks of life. So, today I became a "guitarist"! I am thankful to God for a second chance at having music fill my heart and soul again. Sorry to ramble, but I had to share this news with you and all the guitarists who will welcome me into the wonderful World of Guitar playing! 🎸 Peace to all my new brothers & sisters! ✌🏼 Can you tell I'm excited, lol!

I've never seen anyone walk around their drum set. Kudos!!!
as a kid i grew up being surrounded by their music and their presence so i got to see them quite a few times.
i'm truly humbled and thankful for that.
to me their jazzmaster 1961-1965 era was the best.
their shows only got better and more extreme over the years all the way up til 1981.
check out their songs marabunta, don't go away, java guitars, a.a.a. little hänschen twist, etc.
there were so many amazing indorock bands, but the tielman brothers set the standard and raised the bar for everyone time after time.
they influenced EVERY musician that ever played germany during 1959-1969.
yes, that includes lots of english and american musicians that would later become famous but also someone like benny from abba who as a fan and hep cats bandmember literally said to andy tielman that he wanted to be just like him.
yes, the tielman brothers did not just perform in the netherlands, belgium, germany, switserland or austria, but also played in sweden! (and denmark)
I’m 63, when I was a kid. Rock and roll was about energy and showmanship. Not technical proficiency like Vai & Satriani whatsoever. These guys rock out!

He sadly died in 2011. RIP.
Man these guys don't take a back seat to anybody. Superb musicianship and something I'm sad that I never heard till now. This is just happy music and top notch good old rock and roll at its best . Shame they never made it to North America. Our loss !
This is about the coolest thing I've seen. I can't imagine what it was like to be in the audience back in 1962 when these guys were playing!!

I'm from Indonesia, and I'm proud of one of the legendary rock and roll bands the original tielman brothers from Indonesia, I remember my dad playing the song almost every day .. every time I hear the song I miss the father who is far there......

Wow!!! I thought i knew everything there was to know about Rockabilly but these guys flew under my radar. Thanks for highlighting them. These cats were dynamite!!!
I’ve seen people play guitar behind their back, with their teeth, with the drummer whacking the strings, using the mic stand as a slide. I’ve seen people destroy their equipment with fireworks/explosives, and set their guitar on fire...and even get cracked on the head by the bass they had recently tossed in the air. I’ve seen many things. It’s the first time I’ve seen someone fret the guitar with their foot! And the first time I’ve seen this group! Thanks, Fil!
When you stop and think that "Rock & Roll" officially took off in 1955 and these guys come along with their showmanship style of playing, throughout this performance they trade off leads and solos while keeping in perfect rhythm. I would say these guys where ahead of their times. excellent analysis and homework on the Tielman Brothers. thanks for this one Fil.

When I found out about the Tielman Brothers, when searching for rock bands from parts of the world which remained unknown to many Americans - well, I came to the same impression you did, plus, until then, I thought I was the only person to drum a guitar - they were great
These guys are fun to watch, what a blast!
They played in Hamburg nightclubs where the Beatles came to see them. George Harrison talks about 'Andy the Indian' in an interview. They were the first European band to play Gibson Les Paul guitars thanks to a fire in the Brussels world expo pavillion that burned their guitars, a related businessman then got them these Gibsons.
Theo you hit the nail Bruddah --true story , because I know The Tielman Brothers ~ since I met them at EXPO 1958 - I used to work & know ALL the Hawaiian Hula Dancers at the Hawaiian Village -used to work there at that time.

When I saw two low strung Les Paul late 50s I clicked and was blow away. Way ahead of their time considering that is was 1960. Great one Fil, Jeff in LA USA

Eddie and Alex Van Halen are also from a Dutch-Indonesian background and heritage, I believe.

So glad you got to react to this video! These guys are great! Talk about showmanship, Bill Haleys band the comets were masters with that too. Playing the upright while upside down and laying down. They had quite a few great tricks too. Lots of bands actually did that back in the 50s! A great modern day example is the spoony boys out of France. The guy once jumped off stage and ran around the room while playing an upright bass with a wireless plugin. It was quite a sight in Vegas at 3am!
It doesn't matter how good of a musician you are, you've got to entertain people. These guys understood that.
What a performance!!! Their leg movement reminded me of Elvis. Such energy!! A great job pointing out their technical ability, Fil, and increasing my musical knowledge!!! You never disappoint ; )
Me too, thought of Elvis right away with those legs, and seeing them all move together was incredible!
@Sally Nielsen...The leg splits also remind me of Chuck Berry's live performances back in the 1950's with his leg splits and famous duck walk.

So glad you talked about that drum solo! I was watching it and saying “Drum solos usually bore me, but this guy is incredible!” Like you said, it was easy to tap along to and circling the drum kit was a great trick, but I just the loved the fun he was having and the little shoulder shimmy he was doing during the first part of the solo. Great job as usual, Fil.
I saw this video a couple days ago and sent you the link. I didn't know if you would think it was too low energy, but you put some life into it. LOL. Your comment was classic, the guitar player is standing on the double bass and playing behind his back, as you do. I found myself on the floor laughing and rolling around, as you do with your videos. But what was also impressive was his dismount without missing a beat. Neither he nor the bassist. Thanks for the insight into their career, you really do a good job with these videos.
I had a roommate from Malaysia in my University days, and they played a Southeast Asian sport called Sepak Takraw. It is like volleyball with a small hard bamboo ball, and they played it with their feet. I played soccer (it's like your football but there is no money in it so it stinks less) and I am built like Southeastern Asians so I started playing with them. The net is 1.5 meters high, the best players can reach over the net with their legs to spike it down, without touching the net. I am sure these brothers played the game since you made the comment about their legs.

Well, Fil, I was going to suggest that you do an analysis video on these guys, but as always you are one step ahead, ha ha! One can imagine thousands of kids - many future rock stars among them - watching this performance on the telly back in 1960 and thinking to themselves, "Now _that's_ what I want to do when I grow up.". Real, genuine high-energy rock and roll. There's nothing else like it!
These guys were so, so good. Without Indorock the Netherlands may have still had a rock 'n' roll scene starting in the late 50s, early 60s, but it would never have been so unique and cool as this.

My wife is Dutch/Indo. Her parents were born in Java. My wife in the Netherlands. My wife’s dad loved them. I imagine the Van Halen’s like them also. My in laws were good friends with Eddie and Alex’s parents.
The group was actually from Borneo the more Portuguese oriented part of Indonesia. They were huge in the Netherlands. They played in a few Dutch movies also. Yeah Indo Rock is very good.
Remember there was Golden Earring and Focus also. Many talented Dutch/Indos have been in rock.
They not from borneo, actualy from timor island..

These guys were resident in Hamburg for long periods of time. George Harrison rated "Indo Andy" as the best in town. The guys from The Monks (check 'em if you want some serious insanity!) and The Remo Four (look up their Peter Gunn or Rock Candy clips) used to run and see these guys whenever they had a break. Later in the '60s they ran stereo guitar rigs on stage; the guitarist of The Monks told me it was the best live sound he ever heard, while not terribly loud either. Ten Years After did time in Hamburg during their early days as The Jaybirds; you can bet Alvin Lee got his drum stick shtick from Andy!

Also, you're right about technical ability v. showmanship. When I see a band live - especially a rock and roll band - I will take showmanship and energy over technical ability every time. But the great thing about these guys was that they totally had technical ability, but were prepared to let it take second place to showmanship if necessary. :-)
Well, you’ve done it again Fil - how can I have lived 65 years and never heard of this band of brothers.?Given the times, these guys were amazing . Amazing musicians and showmen. I’ve gotta believe these guys had a strong influence on Hendrix and many other instrument contortionists. 4 thumbs up 👍 👍👍👍

wow thanks for this vid, never heard of them, now I see where maybe so many later performers got their ideas, the teilman brothers were amazing and to do all this without distortion having been invented makes it even more amazing that they rocked so hard!
if you listen closely to the rhythm guitar part of this video you'll notice that distortion was literally invented on stage here!

Wow! Hadn't heard of these guys. Thanks for the vid. One thing I found interesting is the drummer had switched the grip of his left hand when he finished the tour around the kit. Never seen a grip like that. Obviously he couldn't use the traditional grip to reach up high when he was in front, but he was still using it when he got back to his original position (sort of). I just wonder if that grip he used was his own invention or had it been done before.
Pioneers in alternative tuning as well. This was insider music knowledge at one time. Great PUBLIC BROADCASTING SPECIAL PLAYING NOW CALLED WOODSTOCK. It really gives a deeper appreciation of what it was like in the 60s. Another great video.

nice additional detail is that their old father was actually responsible for the show they performed. he literally said "you have to move on stage to show that you are there" even The Beatles have been inspired by the Tielman Brothers after various meetups together with their musical adventures in Germany in the early sixties
