  • At 1.5m by 3.5m this rendition of the iconic Ethiopian fight against colonization by Italian forces is now the biggest oil painting I've ever done. Putting the imaginary scene together using old paintings of the events, articles and other accounts of it was actually the more challenging part; painting it wasn't much of a challenge. It also happens to be my first truly narrative painting.
    (Edit) My response to the concern that the Ethiopian flag I painted isn't accurate:
    In 1896 when the Battle of Adwa was fought, the flag flown in Ethiopia was that of the leading monarchy, the Aussa Sultanate, who ruled the area towards the end of the 16th Century, their flag being a plain red cloth and a different version (the one in the painting) being red, yellow and green pennants tied to sticks and poles in that order. Other times the two flags were combined. It wasn't until 1897, the following year, that the first official Ethiopian flag was finally adopted and the colour order reversed to what it is today.

    Hello Mr. Clavers Odhiambo it has been a while seen u posted this art work and it is wonderful to see it ,but I have seen that the flag of #ETHIOPIA is a bit different that it is positioned upside down do you have awareness or clue about that or have you had any poetry hidden in the meaning of this master piece thank you. The picture on your Instagram is stab with a big wrong #ETHIOPIAN flag.

    • @ClaversOdhiambo
      @ClaversOdhiambo  2 роки тому

      Hey there, in 1896 when the Battle of Adwa took place, the Ethiopian and Italian flags looked exactly as I painted them here. It wasn’t until the following year (1897) that the green stripe was moved to the top and a lion silhouette added at the centre.
      The big rectangular flag I’ve added (on IG) was the immediate next iteration before the lion was added but it’s inclusion in the painting is mostly symbolical - to signify the coming transition. The flag has since gone through 5 major changes over the years to become what it is today.
      So while I appreciate your keen eye, you’re wrong this time :) though the scene is dramatized for artistic purposes, the elements in the painting are historically accurate.

    Do you roll up your oil paintings sometimes? I’m doing a large scale painting about this size and wondering if it’s safe to roll it up to ship it, do you know if that will crack the paint?

    • @ClaversOdhiambo
      @ClaversOdhiambo  3 роки тому +2

      Yeah totally all the time, especially for storage. As to if it'll crack, that depends on the type of primer and/or underpainting you used. If you used silk vinyl, acrylic or oils there won't be any cracking but if you're not sure you can apply whatever paint you've used on a different piece of canvas, roll or fold that one and see how it behaves. Sorry for the late response

      Clavers Odhiambo wow thank you so much that’s good to know, also do you varnish your artwork? I’m unsure if it’s safe to varnish before rolling it too

      Hey Wang, yes this is a composite inspired by my own sketches and ideas from many other paintings, photos etc. Explains the horrible proportions lol

    • @age6
      @age6 8 місяців тому

      The color is correct but u miss the order.
      Green, Yellow, and Red...the correct color and order is like this.
      The Ethiopian flag is a tricolor flag consisting of three horizontal stripes of green, yellow, and red from top to bottom. The green symbolizes the fertility and natural wealth of the land, the yellow represents peace and harmony among Ethiopia's various ethnic and religious groups, and the red stands for the sacrifices of those who fought for Ethiopia's independence and for the blood shed to maintain and defend the country's sovereignty.
      I hope u will fix it?

    • @ClaversOdhiambo
      @ClaversOdhiambo  8 місяців тому

      @@age6 How do you think I arrived at this flag; you think I just...came up with it? Please do some research about your country; I'm Kenyan and I don't know everything about Kenya's history. Doesn't work like that.
      And no, I won't "fix" it; paint your version.

    • @age6
      @age6 8 місяців тому

      yo bro u don't understand me at all, all of my entire life i grew up learning hearing from my great great father so don't argue with me when i own the story. And it doesn't mean that u don't know ur country story and i don't know either.
      Am an artist like u...art is the art of expressing feeling, emotion, the truth...through painting.
      I don't even care u won't fix it, ur wrong painting will not change the history of my country!!
      But if u want to learn and evidence( for ur paint ) come to ETHIOPIA there is a big victory day...i respectfully invite u to come and join us on Mar 2, the great victory of ADWA, which is the pride of Africans. This day celebrates Ethiopia's victory over Italy in the year 1896. so u will come back to the truth not only by reading history book, but by seeing it with ur eyes and touching it with ur hands.
      Remember, always be stand on the truth!!! @@ClaversOdhiambo
