Clyde Julian Foley (Blue Lick, Kentucky, 17 de junio de 1910 - 19 de septiembre de 1968), más conocido como Red Foley, fue un estadounidense cantante, músico y personalidad de la radio y la televisión y una de las mejores contribuciones a la música country tras la segunda guerra mundial.
Durante más de dos décadas, Foley fue una de las mayores estrellas del género, vendiendo más de 25 millones de discos. Su hit de 1951 "Peace in the Valley", estuvo entre las primeras grabaciones en vender más de un millón de ejemplares. Veterado del Grand Ole Opry hasta su muerte, Foley tuvo su papel en la serie de televisión "Ozark Jubilee" entre 1955 y 60.
Es miembro del Country Music Hall of Fame, quien dijo de él "uno de los más versátiles de todos los tiempos" y "una influencia gigantesca durante los años de formación de la música country contemporánea"

I love this song! I square danced to this as a little girl in the early 1960's. It's such a happy song and that's how I remembered it.

I took a square/folk dance class in college for a PE credit. The class learned to dance to this very song. So fun - such good memories!

I did the same thing when I was in college and yes we learned how to do the Salty Dog Rag. It was one of the dances we learned in this class.

Growing up in 70’s Australia, my older brother collected 78’s and had a small Columbia wind-up gramophone. )Very unusual for a 9 year old boy.) This song was in his collection and I loved it. Still do.

This song was really popular when I was a kid in the 50s. There was also a local tradition of coating the rim of a drinking glass with salt, and calling the drink a salty dog. It has a lot of other meanings, having to do with relationships.
