This is why I love the BBC.. the 'Horizon' program used to have me gripped as a child through my teens and in to my early adult hood.. I miss it so much.

ppl really don’t understand how the warping of space time by mass is a source of energy do they?
like what jupiter does to io… the moon does to Earth too
just on a much lower magnitude
but hey we got plate tectonics those are kinda useful
      a wee bit
      cheers

The Russians didn't try to go to Venus, the Soviets did. The Russians are not the Soviets. The Soviets are not the Russians. Soviets could be Russian, and Russians could be Soviets, but they're not the same thing. Russians don't get credit for the achievements the Soviets did, like going to Venus.

Nice, except for the, um ... 'optimistic' ... astronomers talking about going to Mars. We have no way to do that now or in the foreseeable future - sending corpses or dying people to arrive at Mars is not an option. A century or two from now, perhaps. In the meantime, channel gov't spending and resources towards better robot probes to the moons of the outer planets - where the real action is in this star system.

Before everyone jumps on me, I majored in science in college and I have a keen interest in learning about the universe and why things are why they are. But at this point, to be completely frank, why spend so much time effort and money to understand more the planets in the solar system, when we live on earth and don't spend anything to understand THIS planet? For example, the deep oceans or the rain forest. I am all for understanding the nature of black holes, gravitational fields and so on, but let's stop spending billions on what's in Jupiter and all the pretty photos that Juno is taking. It's not worthless, but I can't help but think sometimes the projects are to satisfy curiosities of a few group of people, and to pay their salaries.

    • @MoA-Reload...

Back in the day it used to be how big your nations navy was. Then it was the big gun Battleship that were the status symbol. Now it's a nations space program. I agree with you. While space exploration and expanding our knowledge and understanding of that is extremely important, so is better understanding the world we live on because it's the only one we've got and there's no getting off this rock if/when we break it...at least not yet.
Space is an easier sell to the governments and politicians though. It's also a potential modern day gold rush considering the vast resources and rare metals floating around out there. Now show up with a theory of vast gas and/or oil reserves in an unexplored region of the Atlantic or Pacific sea beds and you'll have all the funding you need to explore the snot out of that in an instant 😂
