    Puss in Boots: The Last Wish is a 2022 American computer-animated adventure film produced by DreamWorks Animation and distributed by Universal Pictures. The sequel to the spin-off film Puss in Boots (2011) and the sixth installment in the Shrek franchise, the film was directed by Joel Crawford and co-directed by Januel Mercado. Based on the character from Shrek 2 (2004) and inspired from the eponymous fairy tale, the film's screenplay was written by Paul Fisher and Tommy Swerdlow, with a story by Swerdlow and Tom Wheeler (the latter of whom wrote the 2011 film). The voice cast of Puss in Boots: The Last Wish includes Antonio Banderas and Salma Hayek Pinault reprising their respective roles as the titular character and Kitty Softpaws, and are joined by Harvey Guillén, Florence Pugh, Olivia Colman, Ray Winstone, Samson Kayo, John Mulaney, Wagner Moura, Da'Vine Joy Randolph, and Anthony Mendez, who voice new characters introduced in the film. Set after Shrek Forever After (2010), the film follows Puss in Boots as he journeys to find the mystical Last Wish for the Wishing Star by teaming up with Kitty and Perrito (Guillén) to restore the first eight of his nine lives, by wishing on the mystical Last Wishing Star. They must race against Goldilocks and her Three Bears Crime Family (Pugh, Winstone, Colman, and Kayo), and "Big" Jack Horner (Mulaney), who all desire the star; Puss must also avoid a mysterious hooded wolf (Moura), who plots to kill him.

      It’s the way he was used in the film. They really put his therapy dog side to good use too. He’s so supportive of Puss throughout the film that you gotta love him.
      I really think they used a lot of Donkey’s traits in Perrito. Both are chatterboxes, abused before meeting the protagonist and pretty much the key factor in their development. Donkey being one of the first people to not judge Shrek for being an ogre. Perrito showing Puss how to embrace the little things in life. He even helped Goldi to see that she always had a family with the Bears.

    Jack Horner is not a fairy tale, it is a nursery rhyme. Its origins are murky, but even in the early days the nursery rhyme character of Jack Horner became associated with spoiled boys of privilege. So making Jack a psychopathic narcissist who grew up with everything but still wants more was a brilliant stroke with nods to the rhyme’s most common interpretations.

    19:23 The common theory that most people have come to believe (me included) is that Kitty lied about not being at the altar, which actually makes sense when you consider the behavior of both Puss and Kitty before they had this serious conversation.
    Whenever either of them mentioned Santa Coloma it would usually result in Kitty showing some hostility towards Puss; then there’s Goldilocks’ comment about how she thought Kitty was on a “spiritual journey” which she would’ve undertaken somewhere between Santa Coloma and the Wishing Star Map heist and therefore was likely an excuse to spend some time away from everything in order to recover from a likely heartache after being left at the altar and is likely the catalyst for her desire to reach the wishing star in the first place especially when you take into consideration what her wish was towards the climax of the movie; and then there’s the fact that she softens up a bit more towards Puss after eavesdropping on his conversation with Perrito from that point forward and she even remarks how she believes that Puss isn’t “that same person as back then” which implies that she really believes that Puss has changed or is at least trying to make an effort to be a better person and is the reason why at 23:02 Kitty sounds devastated when she confronted Puss because she genuinely thought that she could’ve had what she wanted all this time with Puss and likely opened up some old emotional wounds again.
    This movie really surprised me with how good it was when it came to the characters, the engaging story and the action sequences were so 🔥🔥🔥, can’t wait to see what the next movie has in store now.

    • @Christopher_Woods
      @Christopher_Woods Рік тому +23

      I think she lied as well to not make Puss feel even worse then he already did for the reasons you explained. Being a declawed cat alone may give her trust issues and along with being pushed away and abandoned by others hurts her even more. Goes to show us she’s hurt way more mentally than any physical pain she’s likely hiding from being declawed. Gotta respect that being declawed never became a major factor in the plot in either film and is only mentioned twice between both films combined.

    • @thechatteringclown
      @thechatteringclown Рік тому +3

      a bit late, but it's really not much of a theory, it's just common sense that she was lying. i mean, think about it. if she had told the truth about not comming to the church either, how did she know puss never showed? the only way for her to know for certain puss didn't show is if she was there but he wasn't. if she hadn't shown either, like she claimed, she'd be under the impression he'd shown and probably would have acted similiar how puss did when they met, and would have been less agressive and much more apologitic towards him, as she would have assumed he'd would be angry at her for not showing up.

    I just wanna say, I understand Goldie. It's not like she didn't love the bears, she just felt out of place. Which wasn't helped by all the teasing Baby had towards her. It might seem they just had their little banter together. But constantly being told "you're no family of mine!" must really cut deep to someone who already feel like they don't belong.
    You can clearly see during the part at 19:00, when Mama puts her paw on Goldies shoulder, that she truly love them. And she feels guilty for not feeling at home with them. So in her mind she likely feels the bears would be better off without her. But that might be me reading a bit much into it.
    It's also showed during her speech when she reveals her wish to them. When she says "I'm not a bear" she sounds disappointed in herself. Not to mention how she clutches and almost hides behind her staff. She feels awful for thinking like this.
    which is why I love their interaction after Jack blows up. Them all hugging and Baby finally calling her "sis"

Not because I don't _like_ Goldie and the bears..they are fine..but making Goldie feel guilty for wanting her human family back _in a movie where the whole premise is you can have any wish magically granted_ is not fair at all,not only to Goldie BUT TO HER HUMAN PARENTS TOO! It's like everyone assumes they were bad parents who abandoned her,but *we don't know if that's true!* For all we know they could be out there desperately looking for her or they could have died without knowing if their daughter was alive and well!! It's not fair for the movie to act like she *must* choose between her Human Family and her Bear Family...she could have both!!A big inter-species family!! If you had to deal with her story like _this_ it would have been better to just cut it out completely!There are already _a bunch_ of characters that can give the moral"you don't need magic to be happy"...you have Puss,Kitty,Perrito..you have Jack who doesn't _deserve_ the wish...you don't NEED Goldie too!!>^< *All you said it's fair and true* but it would have been fitting for a story with no magic involved. In a world where Goldie really *must* come to terms with the fact she can't reach her human family anymore and she *must* settle with what she has,all your reasonings make perfect sense...but,as I said,in a world where you can have it all through magic *she should have had it all!>^

So even if Death himself did not win against Puss in a duel, he will still eventually claim his life. Which is why Death says "you know that we will meet again." There are two things I love about the Wolf:
    First, his characterization. He is every Kung Fu Panda villain rolled into one.
    Tai Lung: ferocity.
    Shen: triggers PTSD with simple things.
    Kai: intimidating approach with spinning sparking weapons, and loves a good legend.
    Second, his whistle.
    1. Most of his whistle is done in the millennial whoop. Meaning the catchy part uses the third and fifth notes of a chord.
    Examples:
    - Dynamite: I throw my hands up in the air sometimes, saying *Ayo, gotta let go.*
    - Ducktales: Might solve a mystery, or rewrite history, Ducktales! *Whoo-ooh!*
    - Good Time: We don't even have to try, It's always a good time! *Whoa oh oh oh, oh oh oh! Whoa oh oh oh!*
    2. He starts in G major, singing up and back down. It’s almost a call. He then sings an A note, sounding like a progression up. Then it’s followed by a C, so it’s either A minor or F major. But he finishes the first phrase of his song with a G flat; the chord is revealed as G flat minor. That isn’t a sweet or pleasant sound, or a standard musical movement at all.
    3. His full song uses periodicity. If you haven’t heard of the term, think of your favorite Mario music. A verse would be split into two halves, mostly identical but with a variance at the end. Mario and Death use periodicity to make a tonal ‘question and answer.’ For Mario, it’s “there’s an adventure, who will come along? There‘s an adventure, and I will go!” For Death, it’s “I call to you, your life is uncertain; I call to you, and your life ends now.”

    Not fun fact about this movies story:

    • @razordu30
      @razordu30 9 місяців тому

      I can't find it anymore, but there's a great video explaining for why it works.
      When the rate is high, your brain actually can't keep up with what's going on. This is aggravated by the fact that when it moves fast enough each frame has tons of motion blur in it.
      The choppier framerate has no motion blur; you can pause any moment and it looks like a picture out of a book.
      So your brain get a chance to register these crisp images then sticks them together and it allows you to comprehend how much action is happening.
      It's genius. It works really well in animation, but I'm willing to bet we'll see some version of it in an live action movie soon.

    Death (aka The Wolf or Lobo) is without a doubt one of DreamWorks best but also terrifying antagonists in years and Wagner Moura (a Brazilian actor) who is best known Pablo Escobar in _Narcos_ really knock it out of the park as Death. Interestingly despite his actions in the film Death is by no means a villain as he has a sense of honor and nobility, as his main reason for pursuing Puss in the first place was to punish him for arrogantly squandering his eight lives with reckless abandon and mocking him hence Puss "Laughing in the Face of Death", concluding from this that it would be best to kill him before he wasted his final life. 🐺🐺
    Also, before Puss in Boots meets him at the bar, Death appears in a blink and you miss moment when Puss was battling the Giant where he was in a slight dark corner and compared to the Crowd he was not cheering for Puss but watching him to see if he gets killed and hints of him of his wolf head and sickles were seen on Puss' death card numbers.
    Finally, Death's quote in Spanish when he got frustrated by Puss after the latter learn to not waist his last life and value it: _"¿POR QUE DIABLOS FUI A JUGAR CON MI COMIDA?!?"_ translates to _"WHY THE HELL DID I PLAY WITH MY FOOD?!?"_ in English.

      Good that you call Death an antagonist cause the definition of that word is the center of conflict and who’s against the protagonist. That pretty much defines what Death was since the concept of death was Puss’ biggest fear.
      Lobo/Death hated the way Puss disrespected the concept of life eight times and was frustrated with him and believed he would waste his ninth one again. It’s why he encountered Puss to see if Puss would prove him right or wrong about wasting his last life.
