It's like listening to you read a story, which in a way it is. As you're reading, images of the people and places form in my mind. Very interesting teen years and many good memories.

My mother learned of my father's second marriage in the US from someone else.

Enjoying the journal entries. How I wish I had kept a journal. I dont remember many events when I was a teenager... Thank goodness my younger brother has a photographic memory👍🏽🤗
Yes a journal 📓 or diary 📔 is definitely a good thing especially for someone like myself who may either block out traumatic events or forget the details of good times. Life can be hard at times but we have all had positive life changing moments that we may have overlooked and it’s nice to have a written record.

Journal is such a great way of going down the memory lane. It keeps the good, bad and the ugly but shows how much you've grown from the whatever the situation was. I'm a tea drinker as well. Cerasee for me before bed. I love the bitter taste

Further Education in so important to Jamaicans and even more so to Nigerians, I can imagine how proud your entourage felt to see you make this right of passage to go off to an ivy league College. Your diary is a precious treasure, more valuable the the contents of your many jewellery boxes.😎🏁
Habiba you are so blessed to have been able to keep a diary and confidently jot down your deepest thoughts. I tried when I was younger however being of Nigerian decent, my privacy kept on being invaded. I guess I liked to use it for my private thoughts, feelings and secrets.
I am thinking, now that I am a grown woman with adults kids, I may start up again it maybe therapeutic.❤️Thanks for sharing

What a better way to relax after a full day’s work. Your voice is so relaxing. 1988, I had a 4 year old girl. She will be 38 in August and she cringe whenever I tell her, I still keep her teen age diaries and high school log book (scrap books) she shared with her classmates and some of their photos. I am beginning to think that she will eventually thank me for keeping them. At the moment, I understand that her hands and mind are full attending to her 3 sons.
I am class of '89 and I lived in Ujamaa all four years. Thank you for sharing your pictures and your memories.

Childddddd, my dad did the same thing when I was 26 and my mom was still married to my dad and didn’t even tell her while he was in Africa visiting…he lied to all of us. Could not even tell us the truth. Shameless…. All my siblings were shocked lol like wtf.

Hello Habiba and Kenton , Dairy's are good memories 🤗 Habibi you came to the US at the age of 15 from Nigeria and you have no Nigeria accent , my Nephew dad from Nigeria been in the US more than 30 years and a educated man still have the accent .
I don’t think I ever had a “Nigerian accent “ unless I was speaking in Hausa or pidgin English. My mother was raised in England where I was born so we always spoke English along with other languages.
I can put on a stereotypical accent when I want or when I am trying to be funny 😆

I used to be obsessed with the warm cookies 🍪 chocolate chip pecan at Kings plaza! 😋 Brooklyn College was also a big part of our lives and our high school 🏫 held graduation 🎓 there.

Very interested 🤔 recap of college years. I know your dad loves his first family. Your Dad was no ordinary Nigerian man his family had status and not easy to give up if he was ordinary he would have been in America.. It was difficult and you had grandparents support. Making no excuses Life is unpredictable but forgiving and healing is the answer to move forward. I pray 🙏 both families will unite as one in the future.

Dr Habiba, thanks for this video. How can I raise my daughter to become a medical doctor? She starts reception in September, here in the UK. She is turning 5 years old this year. Any advice? Or to rephrase the direct question, how do i raise a child who enjoys learning? I❤🙂🇳🇬👍
I can do my best to give you a short answer but I am sure it goes beyond what I say here. 1. Let your child be a child and allow her plenty of time to play & express herself.
2. Expose her to as many fun educational experiences you can afford like age appropriate museums or art galleries, book stores .l love seeing kids picking out their own books at the kids section.
3. Encourage her to ask questions or ask her how she feels about what she sees around her. This encourages her to think for herself and express herself.
4. Show her what it means to be a good person and what serving others looks like. Be her first great example.
5. Read books or find books with people who “look like her” doing positive things. Role models early on are important. When she is older have her shadow a doctor or spend time with a medical professional.
6. Teach her early not to be mediocre. Always to do her best even when it comes to basic non educational things. Always positive reinforcement without being overbearing.
Hopefully one day your daughter will want to be a doctor 🥼 but if she grows up and wants something different-it is not the end of the world. There are so many other professions of which she can be of service. 🧚🏽♂️I think in the end it is important to raise a good human.

Yes we "ran away' from him but 1. I would have expected him to divorce one wife before you marry another 2. not string along your first wife and have her believing you plan to move and join her 3. Not give up entirely on your children just because you are not with their mother 4. Tell the truth. Like I said it is what it is. We live and we learn but that's how I feel.
@@timstrong2036 Perhaps it was not apparent but my father was quite westernized and educated in England where he met my mother. He may have been raised in a polygamous culture in Nigeria but while they were married he made it clear he was only interested in one wife. Anyone who knew him new that. He made a choice to marry a christian woman ( my mother) and made some promises to her parents.
You said family is" very important to his People" I am sure it is very important to any culture and so is taking care of your children.
Like any relationship they had their ups and downs but setting expectations and honesty is very important regardless of your religion.
Ps I embrace my Nigerian bloodline as much as I can but I am also aware that some of my values are not the same as a typical Hausa woman and will never be given my upbringing and circumstances.

Yes my dad is still married to his second wife. I don’t know her, have never met her ( because I have not been to Nigeria 🇳🇬 since we left)
Why were you surprised to find out that your dad as a Muslim had taken a new wife? Your mother knew he was a Muslim shen she got married and he would marry a second wife, I never can understand why women complain when the man does that especially when the man is a Muslim. By the way Christian do it too and it's not illegal in Africa.
