Karma and Lulu deserved a mention in "Niche but doable", especially given they used to be meta toplaners for quite a few years, and not much changed about how they want to play it out. Gameplan is simple - survive lane using your defensive tools while farming up and harassing whenever possible, then play around your fed team members and preferably concede farm to them, becoming 2nd support. Requires somewhat specific teamcomp to shine (carry jungler, preferably engage support) and works best into other utility tops (tanks especially), but as long as you have someone to play around in draft, you can blindpick them into basically anything.
It's interesting to think about how proplay champion pools work, after checking through this tier list. After watching this video, you can truly understand the difference between a soloqueue champion, and one that provides things, players can only abuse on a competitive level. Really informative video!

Personally, I think Shen is the most optimal pick imaginable. Past level 6 you no longer have to care about winning top lane. One R of his can pretty much gain huge lead for his teammates. He's very safe in lane as he doesn't have many strong counters. He's also pretty easy to play, his abilities are simple and easy to understand. Imo the best choice not only for beginners but also more experienced players.

he relies too much on team carrying him, he has no split push potential other than creating a little bit of pressure due to having no wave clear, he could easily get countered by any ranged or spellcasting matchup, and you need insane map knowledge and foresight to use his ult effectively
but ye Shen is a solid pick
Love Shen but it feels very hard to solo carry as him. Late game is very team dependent, even if you feed your time your still relying on them

Shyvana - Very Niche but Doable.
Has a weak early but strong level 6 to either stalemate the lane or run it over. Ignore the Frostfire Tank Builds as the best one makes her a split pusher focusing on scaling with Hydra/TF/SoS.
I believe there's a couple breakdowns of the style out there that showcases it in high elo Masters+.
I used to play shyv top since I don't jg I was actually surprised she isn't on this list.

Great vid for me now when i gave up on jungle after 155 nerfs and picked up top lane. I can already feel huge difference in xp and gold, it's crazy.
Solid, solid video. I've played a lot of Garen but I'm probably gonna drop him because he only has a window to win during mid-game. Weak early against many other champs and very meh late-game. And its simply not common enough to be able to close games during this window of opportunity with random teammates

I started league as sup mage then i saw pantheon. I was to week to solo the game so i started playing mid with irelia i opened. I moved with her to top coz of some reworks and added tryndamere Olaf mundo to my pick kit.
My kit felt uncomplet and im glad i found this guide. Guess i’ll play some atrox ornn and fiora to truly finish my set:)

The problem with collapsing on Urgot is that he can choose the weakest target and almost instakill them, leading into a fear that can give him space to escape the other champions or to kill another. With titanic hydra he clears waves so fast it's really hard to pin him down, and if you leave lane for a millisecond he will W cancel the shit out of your turret and destroy it, making him actually a really good splitpusher. Also, he is strongest from 13-16 when splitpushing is generally speaking the strongest because of second baron/soul. If you don't send multiple people to stop him he will walk right under your turret and E + R you into multiple legs and you're gone.
Have I mentioned how his E + Flash combo is incredibly hard to dodge and has insane range, and can singlehandedly win lategame teamfights? If you don't use flash at level 2 on Urgot, you're playing Urgot wrong. If you don't kill them, you will at least get 50% of their hp, making the rest of your weakest levels (3-8) much easier.
Also his E is just overloaded as all hell. It's a dash, albeit a short one, it's delayed, meaning you can use it right before you get stunned to basically ignore the stun duration. It's a shield. It's a flip + a short stun, and it does damage. Getting your second E up can decide whether you get a pentakill or die before you get any. It makes the one you flipped targeted by your W, and it's a free setup for your ultimate.
Did I mention how R snipes are about the same damage range as a Caitlyn R, and about the same range, but can hit people in fog of war? I can't express how satisfying a max range R hit on Urgot is.

I use to play Cassiopeia and Karma on toplane. Cassiopeia is so strong if you know how to play her well and she can use a lot of runes, items and spells depending on the matchup
Cass and Karma are toplaners exclusively to counterpick some matchups, like for example, Cass is an excelent counterpick to Irelia or other "Movility reliant" champions.
So i main jayce after trying in an aram match. He feels so nice to play as and feels like he always has a chance to beat someone regardless of character.
I would argue that gwen is good splitpusher as well, being an ap autoattacker means she oneshots towers, if enemy does not repond to her tower fall to her as fast as to yorick.
Gwen does literally everything hahaha

As an Akali mid main, yeah it might not objectively be the best decision in terms of champ, Yone would be the best fit for me. More robust champion in the top lane, can still be played mid, Akali can be my backup pick when rest of team is AD, boom. Only problem is people love banning those two champs lol. i would also put sejuani in "niche but doable", her burst combo can be really nasty, she has great gank setup, and she's really tanky. Not the best snowballer, but great in teamfights and only has a couple truly unwinnable matchups (the worst being udyr).

warwick? played a lot recently on this champ. he is very good because of sustain, trades opportunities, but i think if he is not going ahead then mid to late he is weak especially against strong kite team

that's an really interesting tier list, more accurate than the bullshit F and S tier that mean nothing. I still have a point about gnar since i main him in Low master EUW, he is certain to be a good lane bully against a lot of champion but mega gnar is way less impactful than you think in laning phase atleast. About the buff, he got one buff in the early of this season, and the last one was in season 11. He can be a solid pick against some champion, and gutter against other. sitting at around 50% winrate for 5 years now. Never too good, never too bad.
I think even in her current state tank karma is a decent ranged lane bully that has passable clear due to Q and can win on spacing alone. She is a monster on 2 items and can cinvery well into carry protector.
AD ahri top is legitimately broken with ghost. Regardless of lack of ap her Q still holds up in waveclear for a decent while
Neeko is a ranged lane bully thats underrated as a counter pick
Warwick straight up is briar sidegrade
I disagree on Irelia being a splitpusher. She is great im nessy teamfights and her tower pressure is rather low, but she is a reverse pantheon. She lives by her mid game power but around the time everyone is lvl 16 and has 4 items, even if shes ahead you feel her fall off. The moment enemy mid and adc have their defensive item like zhonya and ga and irelia's sustain and damage prove insufficient

Tank karma, ad ahri, warwick - all good tools to use in niche cases

I got a duo friend with millions of mastery in heimerdonger, and he sits top until he reaches nexus. I just ward for him, provide blue.. and give him herald when possible. We often end in 15-20mins. Heimer is a splitpush god imo.
I like Alois list more because he listed Sion as counterpick for example into comps that have no % health dmg
As a top laner of Zac, I agree with your points regarding Zak. He is very similar to Tahm kench, he can bully in lanes, he has mobility, but he is not as powerful a duelist in long duels as Tahm, but he is stronger in short fights. Strong in the early game with ignite and in the late game. Among the counter picks I can cite Fiora, Yone and Gwen, who oversustain you, are mobile and have unbearable true damage. Perhaps they can be defeated if you build Zac in an up bruiser through a conqueror, but I personally played too little in this build.
As for the rest of the tier list, there are some controversial issues (for example, Yone is a good blind pick that can defeat anyone on the top, except for Renekton, who is a direct counter to Yone). But overall I agree.
I feel like the list really misses Swain, perhaps in the ranged bully category, as Chinese superserver build (Aery, RoA, Cosmic drive, Frozen heart) really does wonders and I feel it easily passed the Renekton test.

@@ECPlaysLoL although picked alot,swain is as good as support in midlane because his actual role is a mage midlaner just like brand lux and xerath. the reason ppl play him mostly on support is because his ult,e and w benefits from having more ppl. other than that,he just has a cc/hook and W which slows and most importantly grants vision

Renekton test is really interesting. Though in some metas normal top laners don't pass it 😂
I used to play Viego top back in the day before they gutted him. Good times, not sure where he would be on the list nowadays though. He fits in a lot of them. Probably would put him on the same tile as Kayle and Vlad as he used to scale similarly to Vlad albeit obviously less. Nowadays I'm not so sure. Where would you put him?
He gives me Kayn top vibes, where its possible to lane and farm, but I think he would get no push priority vs the strong early laners. Perhaps a good pick into the "weak early but spikes hard" champions because he fits there and I think he also kinda spikes hard at Bork or Kraken depending on what you like with him. For me Viego is very much a 2v2 champion and maybe combinations like Viego Elise or Viego Reksai can be pretty brutal to lane against as say a Nasus for example.
@@ECPlaysLoL On second thought you're right, at least today. Right now he feels like a weaker Yasuo, basically. He used to statcheck characters like yone, fiora, and gwen at his peak but nowadays he's just so weak. I'd contemplate putting him niche but doable. I'm just waiting for them to buff him again since he's my favorite character by visual design and top lane is the only lane I wanna play.
i would add a come back tier , like i play garen mainly and even if jng camp me and bot lane is top getting dived 4 men at 10min and am 0/6 , onces laning phase ended i just OUTPLAY some players with R and am back into the game like nothing happen , can see pantheon do it too , join a team fight execute some people with small Q and u find yourself getting a triple kill
Good tierlist! Naafiri should be in "weak early but scale hard" she is one of the weakest toplane laners in the game imo
i feel like nautilus is a sleeper top lane. hes got a lotta cc an auto enhanced+shield and can tank damage like any other. plus over confident oponents sometimes find them selves being ran down 100-0.
for me it's always if i like the visual design of the character i will have fun playing him.
I played a lot of Senna, Karma and Alistar top and I can say that they all work well on top but my all time fav is Karma and I can say that I won most matchups vs Rene on top :D
Karma was kinda Meta at times and the Alistar Palpatine build (back when Ionic Spark or was it Static Shiv?) procced from his W. It was fun but hilariously dumb :D

i like to play karthus for splitpushing while still being of help in teamfight just by pressing r, if 2 come top and u die u can still ult for basically 5 v 3 even 1 v1 top would end 5 v 4 or hed have to immediatly tp after he kills u

I used to play alot of Morgana top lane when we still had clearity on SR. Max the puddle and watch the minions go bye bye, can't push my lane without minions there friend. And I used to stay in lane for 25-30min before first back.
I still take her top lane from time to time, but it's not the same.

Swain top i actualy a very solid pick a aspecialy against tanks and immobile champs. But he realy sucks against divers(Jax camille etc) i usually go airy+scorch/conditioning. And build like ap juggernaut Roa cosmic FH abyssal mask Gargoels.
i, as a jax main 200k points, would say he is a more of a lane bully than a 99 splitpush since he is incredible at team fights

Wouldnt it be even better if u would sort all the champions into different categories and then rate them from most rewarding to main? For example, fiora not being in the splitpush category seems kinda off, and there is also no point in denying that someone like Gnar is usually more rewarding to main then nasus. But overall, i really like the concept of sorting champs by specific role instead of pure viability in the current meta.

Lulu has been a successful top laner in the past, even seeing some pro play several years ago. I'd put her with the Niche but doable tier as she is still playable and counters some stuff commonly seen up top. I'd also move Shen over to 99% splitpush because when is a Shen ever with his team? Only when he ults; exactly.
I chose renekton and did not go wrong with the choice cuz this champ is amazing at most things

That is a nice tier list, can you just give example when you speak a bout matchup, like he has bad matchup but what are they ?
Gnar is such a weird champion to try and put in a box like this. Mini gnar isn’t a lane bully at all. He can’t really fight you before one item unless he already has a huge health lead, or you chose a champion that can’t threaten him at 700 range (like kayle or one of the immobile champions). But mega gnar will jump on top of you, stun you, throw a house at you and then walk away with enough of a lead that now mini gnar starts to bully with Q poke.

When I started playing league, I agreed to a 5v5 with my friends, I played fiddlesticks top, I failed the renekton test really bad.
When I started league around Season 2, my friends put me on Kogmaw top, so i feel your pain 😂
Ashe is an excelent off-meta Ranged lane bully. Wins pretty hard against a lot of matchups, but loses hard to some.
Uh shen main here. Shen used to be a lane bully but no longer is. He has been nerfed bc his r is considered to powerful by riot in pro so he has to have some sort of weakness.
as a main aatrox i say nothing can stop him, just an equally fiora and it's a skill matchup
There are a lot missing here, even an entire archetype. Supports are played toplane, and they do work often. Karma, janna, lulu, all not meta picks but do work and would survive the renekton test. Also mages like swain, warwick is also missing as well.

My soraka was a menace. Lulu is a menace. Every enemy jungler works over time as a top laner.
How many more champs can fit the blind pick segment? Im a support/tank top that is trying to play more skill expressive champs. I hate how counterable top picks are and that sometimes im not even guaranteed a swap in select
It depends on how comfortable you are with certain picks. The reason why Renekton is great is because he can lane vs anyone. I would argue that GP if played well can be blindpicked, if you want to ban Quinn or Akshan because they harass you very good early.
Sion is a great blind pick imo, because even though the likes of Fiora or Gwen can roll over you, you become tanky enough to survive them.
Garen can be blind picked in my experience as well, because you outscale most popular top laners.
Top is really brutal when it comes to counterpicks because nobody bails you out of a bad laning phase, but there are also times where people pick a counter to your champion but they themselves cant play it very well, so you still win.
Also, a counter only works if they have priority in the lane, so if I am counterpicked, I will try and play for level 2 or 3 and gain a lead there, before their champion gets to play their game.
I know Pantheon is put in the lanebully but idk unless you find a monster lead, he feels so bad after. I've seen Pantheon gain significant leads vs many champs like Aatrox Jax Mordekaiser to only lose them the moment those champs hit 6 or their first item (Ksante for example)..I feel this champ is in a very weird spot to be honest and compensates with his insane Amor pen value at 16 ...He just feels super underwhelming.
Yes 1 to 5 he is monstrous but I dont feel that is enough nowadays...
I remember SpearShot talking about this when he said "I dont know why people say Pantheons late game sucks. Hes fantastic at 4-6 items. Hes amazing at 1 item. Its his midgame on 2-3 items that sucks".
Yes people outscale you and will outfight you, but as Pantheon you are supposed to use the lead you gain early to impact the map and win that way. Otherwise there is no reason for a champion to be that strong early, if you are still going to be strong for the rest of the game and nobody would contest you.
Its the same as Darius. Lets say I am Nasus, would I fight him early game? Not really, because he would just win straight up because a lot of his power is packed into his early game. After I get divine on Nasus, Wither, Come here boy, Stack.
The matchup switches completely.
No shit Pantheon loses to Ksante once he reaches six, Pantheon has a utility ultimate. Taking ignite compensates for that but it's a timing thing

@@popamihnea6695 fr, and if the opponent just deny you every windows you hard lose in value until late game, unless they just win before that. And anyway letgame you still have 0 defense it doesn't change because you go eclipse or cleaver so its still unplayable unless they do not have frontlaners
I'm not a toplaner, but I like Warwick Top, and I win a lot of games with the champ in top
i started playing kled a lot and got good with him. No one knows how to play against him and they don't respect his early damage. I main teemo, but cant find a champion that is similar
I was confused why gnar is melee bully but im happy you really nailed his issues on the head.
Mini gnar is fucking useless right now and feel horrible to play. I wouldnt consider gnar as a melee bully because any juggernaut can fight him easily. Hes more of a bruiser but the Gnar community has been begging for mini gnar buffs to give him the survival tools he needs to function and at least survive but riots design team is shit. And wont fix him.
Fiora definitely isn't the pinnacle of champion mastery, there are speedruns for getting her R vital proc the human limit has been achieved and she is mastered.
GP is deserving and truly difficult the same could be said of Riven, and Jayce to some extent but he's a lot more counterable than the other 3 mentioned even at the top end of play at the end of the day he's a squishy poke/burst champ whos' only itemization is more damage. Fiora and Irelia would probably be the best swap, my reason being that Irelia operates far more like riven in game, get a lead build your core items, and snowball teamfights. Fiora on the other hand itemizes sheen and plays for a 1v1 duel in the sidelane playstyle while boasting the weakest teamfighting of anyone in the highest ROI tier.

What about Azir top? I think he survives the Renekton test .. he has mobility his ult and can easily go exhaust and tp to stay in lane survive all ins and outscale him easily .. u are even pretty safe against most ganks ..
Lacks damage and early waveclear to survive toplane. What can Azir do if Renekton crashes wave 3 or 4, recalls and tps back. Now Azir cant play the bounce, the wave is pushing away from him and he has an item disadvantage. The reason why Azir is safe midlane, is despite his E, the lane is much shorter. Azir gets exposed top lane.
But with the on-hit Azir changes, maybe you can pull it off if you get to counterpick.
I play Olaf with swifties and relentless hunter. He can be very mobile if you know how to build for it

Heimerdinger and Warwick could be put in the list, probably imobile powerhouse.

I really don't like blind picking Volibear, although he's fine if you can adjust your playstyle. I'm missing Warwick, probably in niche, and maybe Nidalee but that's very niche, Ekko and Taric and Shyvana and Janna, too. Zac is blind pickable for me, but then it's still my most played champion and tbf Ornn has better lane damage. Sejuani is in the same spot, kinda good laning phase like Malphite and Ornn. You don't want to pick Poppy into Irelia if you plan to fight for lane, afaik she still beats you in the 1v1, but it's a good counter for skirmishes.
