  • I ventured all the way down to Port Huron to hunt at Fort Gratiot County Park. Unfortunately I messed up the audio on this video but decided to publish it anyway. My external microphone wasn't plugged in all the way, so only the front mic on my GoPro was recording. My voice sounds muffled throughout the video, but for those of you who love the sounds of the waves, they came through loud and clear! I edited the closed captions if you'd like to use those. Sorry for the mistake.

    Kingsley North is a lapidary store in Michigan's U.P. They make a great cab machine and sell many other brands too. They have a huge selection rough rock, tumblers, grit, jewelry supplies etc. at good prices. I buy most of my coarse grit from here in 45 lb. bags. It's the best price I have found. Thanks for a warmer video to watch after. I've lived in Michigan in the 70's. Coming from California it was quite a change, even though I was born in Detroit my parents left Detroit for California while I was a baby. Moved back for a little while. Loved the electric storms, the ice on the trees, the fireflies and most of all the PEOPLE. I wasn't a fan of the weather especially in the winter when all the trees seemed to look like they died.

    Hi Rob...I posted this video on the FB group "Great Lakes Rocks and Minerals" and you should see a quick up-tick in the views from people in that area. I don't think you found the best examples of what can be found in the area of southern Lake Huron but to be fair you weren't hunting under ideal conditions. That water sure looked murky and hard to pick out those special stones beneath the surface of the water. Hope you can make it down that way again some time when the weather is nicer and you're always welcome to cross the border and visit us in the Kincardine area during the summer months to see what can be had there. "Great Lake Loops" would be a great theme for a series of features.

    Hey, nice to see you this far south! I've been going rock hunting up along that side of the Thumb the last few years.
    A little north of there is Lakeport State Park. The part that is camping only during the season is great for rock hunting. But you have to go when the season closes unless you are going to camp there overnight. The not-camping half of the park (a few miles south) is mostly sand though. (And if my car didn't need work, I'd be headed up there tomorrow since it's supposed to be about 60 out.)

      I think Lake Huron and Lake Superior have about the same likelihood of freezing. The inland lakes here definitely freeze over. It surprises me how Taylor is able to get to beaches pretty much all winter. Here, the beaches are usually covered in feet of piled up ice and snow.

    Hi Rob - is there a place online that tells you what the lakes are doing on a given day (i.e. if they are calm, stirred up, big or little waves)? I found a wind speed site but that's about all. Thanks, love your videos and your guidance!

    • @MichiganRocks
      @MichiganRocks  2 роки тому +1

      The wind speed and direction should give you a really good idea. Offshore winds mean generally calmer water. The problem is, the wind predictions seem to be the least accurate part of a weather forecast. I try to pick calmer days so I can fly my drone as well as so I can see into the water better. I drove an hour to a beach yesterday and was disappointed when I got there because he winds that were suppose to be 5-10 mph out of the east were probably more like 15 mph out of the southeast. There won't be any drone shots of that beach and it would have been the perfect place to get some aerial shots.

      No, there are lots of places to get Petoskey Stones, but not in Lake Superior. I don't think there are any in Superior. Lake Michigan is most known for them, but I think Lake Huron has just as many. The more northern parts of the lakes tend to have more Petoskeys, but this beach had a few too. They occur south of Rogers City in Lake Huron and South of Harbor Springs in Lake Michigan.
