    This video couldn’t be posted at a better time. I’m at the final stages of my PhD program, finishing my dissertation and in the job market. Upcoming conference submissions and presentations. It’s a new year so I need to file my taxes, and apply for an OPT (since I’m an international student). And I’m sure I’m forgetting something. It’s safe to say that I am literally FREAKING OUT!!

      Try doing one thing at a time! Each evening, take some time out to plan your priorities for the next day (don't write down everything- pick one top priority and any small quick tasks that need to be done). If you start the day not knowing what you're going to do then it'll always be a struggle

    Every thing you've said here is spot on, i can vouch from my personal experience with the PhD. Thank you for sharing your experiences and wisdom.
    I also appreciated what you said about meditation. I wish more people understood that the lessons of meditation are actually applied outside the mediation practice as we engage with our real world and very human problems.

    Hello! Sorry to write you on this video because my comment is related to your “How to write your PhD thesis”. I just wanted to make sure you will read this. THANK YOU! Thanks to that video, just one year ago I was able to finish my thesis on time (in a now or never situation) following your 5 parts structure. I grabbed that scheme and it helped organice my very tangled ideas on time. It was decisive.
    So, truly, I’ll be forever thankful to you.
    Sorry for the intrusion here. Thank you also for speaking about anxiety, such an important matter.
    Best regards 🙏🏻

    Thank you so much for this video. Earlier in the week I got some pretty intense feedback from my advisor on my job market paper and lots of modifying need to be done. It was a hastily put together draft but I still didn't expect for there to be so much that are wrong with the paper, he also called me out on not engaging in the literature enough and said I wrote better before, and the sad thing is I don't really disagree with him. I don't know if I want to say I don't think doing a PhD and reading a bunch of academic papers suits me, but I definitely don't enjoy doing it which is probably why I haven't done a good job of it. But I definitely want to finish and graduate, and I am looking to go into the non-academic job market.
    I have been paralyzed with anxiety and fear ever since I got my paper feedback a few days ago and have been procrastinating and not be able to get anything done. But watching your video at the very least helped calm me down a little and gave me some perspectives. So thank you very much! 🙏

      If the first draft was hastily put together, slow down! Writing takes time and care and thought (despite what the people who say, "just get words on the page" think), and your supervisor probably looked at it as if it was a final draft for submission.
      Take one section at a time (starting with the introduction) and put some care into it!

      @@James_Hayton thank you so much for the reply! And yes I agree I now realized I have to slow down and give more thoughts into every part of the paper, I was in a bit of a haste because I was thinking that I have to start applying for jobs soon with the paper, but realized now that I shouldn't be using that as an excuse and a source of anxiety to rush through the draft and instead settle down my mind and really dive into every part of the paper. Fortunately the empirical analysis part is not the main issue, but it's mainly my theory and literature review part that needs more work.
      My advisor did know that it was first draft but still, looking back now although his feedback was harsh, a lot of it was also constructive criticism and he marked my draft full of comments. So I am trying to tell myself that he cares about my success, and just trying to block out the emotional aspect of it and purely immerse myself into looking at and addressing his comments one at a time to the best of my ability.

    Dear James, I'm a fan of this channel. I feel more people should watch it. So this is just a suggestion. The audio in this video is not of good quality. All empirical evidence suggests that UA-cam viewers will stay on even if the video quality is poor but their tendency to scroll through or move on to another video is greater if the audio quality is not good. Anyway, thanks for these videos, and keep em coming.

      Can you be more specific? Someone else mentioned echo, but you might be hearing something else (depending on what you’re listening with and your hearing range).
      I’m in a new space so gradually setting things up, but didn’t want that to stop me publishing!

    Thank you very much! I have started my PhD this year. I have a problem that sometimes I feel inadequate for the PhD that I'm studying although my supervisor doesn't say so. Maybe because I find research as an ocean of information and I'm the type of person who gets so deep and I always have a lot of questions and feel like I have to learn a lot. I just want to know is it normal sometimes to feel like I'm like a beginner in my field? Thank you

    • @James_Hayton
      @James_Hayton  3 роки тому +10

      You're supposed to be a beginner! That's the whole point of a PhD, to learn the basic skills of academic research. There will be people who have been working in your field for 30 years- how could you possibly have the same level of experience as them?
      It takes time, so slow down a bit, pick what you want to focus on, ask lots of questions and don't be scared of making mistakes.

    This might be a bit annoying however as a pragmatic solution, from what I read perhaps setting up pseudo-deadlines at the beginning if you haven't started yet, and when going through panic the suggestion is to set up deadlines with your supervisor, that seems to be the advice from resources book or practice the discussion of how to talk about the write up with a friend, if it's an alien or unfamiliar act, before discussing with a supervisor, even writing out what you are going to say 1st. I do understand the need to manage the feelings first.

    • @James_Hayton
      @James_Hayton  2 роки тому

      deadlines don't help if you're having a panic attack. They're a good way of sharpening focus when you're near the end of a project, but I find they're often counter productive if they're the first thing you do
