I am at the verge of dropping my education due to the stress, anxiety, guilt, and constant mind bugging! Thank you for your videos. They are very helpful. I have to remain disciplined and try and finish:)
I am feeling the same. I took a couple of years off and now that I am back, it is very hard to see the light at the end of the tunnel. Thanks James for teaching us how to remain disciplined!
Thanks James. I am writing or editing one page per day. Some days this means over 12 hours work, on others just 2 hours checking references and grammar, but I need this basic target and then add more tasks if I feel up to it.
Wao! I love this great skill of your and your prospective upgrade. Can you share with me some skills that have help you over the year. To read and edit. I love to do it. But it a serious stress on me. You can be my boss Walsh.
A useful video! Procrastination is definitely a problem for many PhD students. They also need to know when to walk away and do something else. Sometimes less is more, it's the quality (not quantity) of time spent on the thesis that will make their PhD a timely success.
This is/was a wonderful and worthwhile video in supporting those of us struggling alone, in trying to complete our dissertations. Thank you for a very helpful and much needed support system! Bottom line: don’t give up! Hang in there! We’re so near the finish line to victory in completing our goal!
OMG, Your preaching to the choir. We are in the dead of a very hot Houston summer, and the last thing I feel motivated to do is to work on my Dissertation. Too many distractions and I end up writing 8 to 10 hours for 3 days leading up to my weekly meeting with my chair. Nonetheless, I have written my first 25 pages, and my chair says my group of 3 DBA Candidates is doing just fine.
Thanks James This is just really what I need to move forward. Thank you for these very helpful pointers. I’m going to try and implement this going forward
Great advice to break procrastination. Thanks James. A small tip which I think is important is that put an easier task as the first thing in the daily to-do list, like reviewing yesterday's notes or something like that. You can finish it without much effort. It will give you a bit of satisfaction which encourages you to do difficult tasks on your to-do list.
I agree and that can work well, but sometimes it's good to put whatever you've been putting off first. The jobs we feel the most resistance to are often the most important.
This advice makes so much sense! Will try it out right away and finally get to work on that paper! Or at least sit with it 😜Just kidding... off I go. Thank you!
That was really a gud video. Really helpful! I ve myself experienced these things u have told to beat up the procrastination. But never really realised that these are actually the methods or the ways to get out of procrastination. Yes! When we do something verryy difficult (which it seemed like before starting) .. it gives us a strange and unique happiness nd satisfaction and also the excitement of doing it once more.
Thanks, but actually mothers who are doing Phd really they get overwhelmed and lost their minds, and whenever I asked my colleges for support they said its better to learn by your self, and I feel lost. because I do not know from where to start due to messy mind from various responsibilities. When I went to library, I always blame my self that my kids are not deserve to be alone all that time. and when I spend my time serving their need I always blame my self for not being their for my study. Oh my god, I am in a circle and I don't like or respect academia who can doing paid job for me. what do you think James :)
It's so frustrating when people say it's better to learn by yourself... why? Why is it better? Isn't it more efficient to share knowledge? Isn't that the whole point of a university? I might have to record a rant about this...
but, may be this mostly happened in developing countries, I am from Egypt. And here the study you have to take two years introductory courses and other two years writing your thesis. But, you are totally alone during writing your PhD thesis , because the supervisors are not having time for you. I will wait your video, it would be helpful. Thank you again for your considerations.
Love this Doctor. I wanna ask how to over the stress and anxiety of reading a long pages or articles in relation to what you have presented how it could be stressful neurologically.
There are a few ways I could address this question... can you be more specific about what happens to you when you read a paper? What do you do? Where does it go wrong? What do you think or feel?
@@James_Hayton Hi James, I just entered the second year of my PhD and I am basically at the end of ym course credit reuqirements. Problem with me while reading a paper is I get carried away by the references. Sometimes I am reading a paper and I find that inorder to understand this I must read that ref and so on. I always feel like what if I dont have enough knowledge on this topic before starting my work? What if I get stuck later on with no one to pull me out or guide me to the end? It feels so daunting sometimes. Often I would be reading a paper and slowly I would start feeling that these people have already done so much, how will I ever match their level? And many a times I would google things out of a paper and never come back to it. I hope it was not too long. Appreciate your suggestions. I am not sure if this is common among PhD students to feel this way but I do feel it.
I've been facing resistance for past 2 years. I decided to call it quits. But I still find myself watching and reading (just a little bits and pieces) about my topic and about thesis writing. 🤷🏻♀️🤦🏻♀️
Hi James. Now I am about to write my thesis before which I need to submit the synopsis. Please suggest what to write first, synopsis or thesis chapters? How to start to finish within time?
thank you for posting this.. kinda unrelated but do u have any advice on navigating personalities/miscommunication? committees are sometimes very diverse and like sometimes i feel like i just can’t do anything right:(
I'd deal with the shame by taking action- small steps in the right direction and build on small successes. If that doesn't help, talking it through with a therapist is a good idea since they are trained to help with this kind of thing

Sitting and worrying about things. This just defined my entire existence.

Wow. A video under 10 minutes that takes most people an hour to say. Quality over quantity.

@@James_Hayton I feel weary anytime am to read an article of many pages. No especially reading articles whose content am not really familiar with.
It helps if you know what you are looking for- why are you reading that long paper? If you know that then it's usually a bit less daunting
@@James_Hayton Doctor its always comes as an assignment from a lecturer of mine to read and review. And to point out new discovery from it.
