As co-director/writer/designer of 198X, I (and the rest of our little team here in Stockholm, Sweden) want to thank you for such a passionate and in-depth review. We all watched it together -- and are moved by your kind words and shared appreciation of what the world of video games is all about. Tack så mycket!
I really like what I see and just bought the game. What are your plans for the future of the game? New content via patch (more levels for each of the five games?) or a sequel maybe? @SwitchUp: Great review as always. I am really tempted to help you by reviewing obscure games such as this one. Do you have any interest in more writers that review a game or two per month for you to present on this channel?
I was born in the mid 70's, and grew up in the 80's. I really do miss that time and miss playing in arcades. The video games and the movies back then were awesome. Now being in my mid 40's I wish to be a kid again back in the 80's. I may pick up this game someday, just not sure if I need more nostalgia of the good days.
I’m a few years younger than you but definitely still of that era and it truly was a special time. So much of what still exists today in popular culture began in that decade. Glen
I grew up in the 90s born in the mid-80s I really miss the 1990s. I will never forget getting my first game console the Sega Genesis ❤. Playing Sonic the Hedgehog Street Fighter 2 Streets of Rage Phantasy Star I miss the era of beatemups. Also love playing final fight and Turtles in Time on Super Nintendo 💪.
Check out our earlier video, Planar Conquest: - ua-cam.com/video/eYEOBKYgv4c/v-deo.html A fun collection of some of the best genres to have ever existed. As much as I love shorter gaming experiences, especially now with a new-born baby, this one was just a touch too short. What do you think? Happy gaming. Glen
God I love the look of this game! Can't wait to play through this in one sitting. Props to the devs for such an innovative idea that tickles the nostalgia bone. Thanks a lot for the review lads! Was hoping you'd review this one :D
There should be about 5 levels for each game. After beating the story the player could enter the virtual arcade and practice their scores and beating the 5 levels. That would add a lot of replayability and since they put so much work into establishing the skeleton of each game, it seems very strange they would stop so short of fleshing out each arcade experience. That being said I did love the game. I really hope to see free updates in the form of that mode that I described though.
I just got this game myself. And instantly fell in love. It reminds me a bit of retro game challenge in a way. This is a amazing game highly recommended
I hope they release a DLC that extends each game, adding new additional levels to each game to encourage replay value. Even if it was a paid DLC, that would really round out this game for me.
SwitchUp I hope they do both! Depending on how they designed and built the game, it would be great if they could somewhat easily create new levels for the games using the same engine and elements, and wouldn’t have to worry about adding any new story elements (saving that for the sequel)
Quite an interesting take. This is a good representation of how games had evolved from then to now. Its a small nostalgia pack that reminds us that games are what we want to see them as.
Glen thanks again, one a role tonight. Make sure you get plenty of rest. Looks interesting. This collection is hitting the nostalgia vibes for 80s kids/gamers.
This game looks VERY interesting, it’s quite unfortunate that it’s so short though. Ill pick this game up on a sale later on down the road but it definitely seems worth playing!
Reminds me what a great gaming experience i had as a child! I grew up with lcd handhelds, Atari 2600, C64 and my beloved arcade cabinets when i was a teenager! I will definitly get this game ;-)
I got this today and like you said the moment the title screen appeared it immediately reminded me of blade runner right off the bat..overall i recommend this title its cool
I really had high hopes for this one, but at one to two hours.. This game has that Saturday morning RPG charm which I really liked however.. I'm Not sure I can pay full price for it. Maybe I'll check it out when it goes on sale. Great review!! Keep up the good work guys!! 😎👍
This looks bloody gorgeous! Retro feeling but without skimping on the animation, the fighter section looks like the most appealing to me but you can tell a lot of love went into this! That last section looks a little less fun. But the price seems right. Have spent more on bad films at the cinema Hope they do a full version of Beating Hearts, animation is so so nice! With the music being so hyped up I’m gonna listen to the Soundtrack Thanks Glen you guys continue to help build my Watch list up 😆
The music is sensational mate. The short driving section is a bit of a missed opportunity gameplay wise, but the score as you play that part - wow! Glen
Having spent my early/mid teen years in the 80s, this looks lovely. Price seems a little high for what you get though, so I might wait for a sale on this one.
Look like a good time. Especially that game Void. I'd love a new Gradius game. I completely agree with your value score. Game would be perfect at the $6.99 mark. So like 5.49 UK.
Yeah that would have 100% been the sweet spot in regards to pricing. Considering the effort and craftsmanship that has gone into it though, I guess I can understand them going a little higher. Glen
The thing with games that try and do this sort of thing, they usually end up as the saying goes.. “jack of all trades, master of none”. Even if they go above and beyond and one of the game genre levels turns out really good, but once that level is done, you never go back to that style. So it’s like you blink and it’s over. It’s just sort of setting up the gamer to always be wanting more.
Guys, first up, I love your channel. It's my favorite Switch-Channel by far. Your spot-on most of the time and I'm actually sad when I'm looking for a review (especially of more indie niche titles) and there's none made by you guys. I also very much love this game. Almost everything the developers did, they did excellent! Music and graphics are fantastic and all of the games are great fun, despite, like you pointed out, the last one. Which would propably be ok, if it wasn't supposed to be the grand finale. So this game deserves all the praise it can get. But come on guys, a value of 14/20 is just stretching it way too far. All of the games are great but super short, to the point where it's just sad. Especially the beat 'em up part with it's amazing animations should have been more fleshed out. The racing part looks great but is just a vehicle to get to the next story part (they all are kinda). Even the story itself, leads to nothing. The whole thing feels like an ambitious demo or a teaser for greater things to come (which it may very well be). I paid around 7€ for it on the latest sale and still don't really feel like I got my money's worth. This may read way too harsh, as I enjoyed the game a lot and hope to see more of the developers, as they seem supremely talented. The rest of the review is also spot-on like always. I would just argue that the value score is way off. Don't really know why I wrote that long-ass text just to make that point but who cares. Keep up the awesome work dudes!
Value takes into account things such as production values as well as length. A lot of people put a huge emphasis on hours per pound/dollar/euro paid for a game, which is fair enough but we can't go with something as final as that. We'll never agree on everything, especially as we open ourselves up further by showing every aspect of our scoring rather than just a final score but I'd like to think we agree on the general points or final score in the end. Thanks for watching mate. Glen
Loved this game a lot. Just a bit on the short side. I think the RPG game was fine, personally. But the outrun inspired game was short, and so was the streets of rage inspired section. The Ninja game was a perfect length, though. I was hoping there would be something similar to pacman, donkey kong, or Mario somewhere in there. Having one of those types of hames would have helped to balance out how short many of the games were. What's here is great, it just feels like there's just one, or two things missing. As far as controls went, I didn't like how hard it was to pick up things in the beat-em-up section. Other than that, it was great.
Just saw this on the eshop and it seemed interesting especially at the price. Come over here and see you have a review up already. My main question is, how is the replayablity of the game? What else is there to do after you beat each game? Would it be to just get higher scores? I could justify the price and time put in by spending some gold coins but is there any incentive to go back and replay them?
You could go back and look to better your score but, realistically, I don’t think many people would. It’s more like an experience and then you’re done I’m afraid. Glen
Could be wonderful if they create a game where you can do everything . Like drive a space ship a car become a ninja and live fantasy adventure all connected in just one game. A single player that can experience all this during the story in an 80's style!
Beating Heart inspired by SoR? Is the soundtracks as good as SoR? Kill Screen reminded me of the NES 8 bit hidden gem " Getsufuu Maden" dungeon crawling section.
Funnily enough, Yozu Koshiro didn’t do the music for Beating Heart. Probably to avoid comparisons. I think he did the music for Shadow Play instead. Glen
I'll probably pass on this at least at this time it would have been cool to see their take on a classic arcade game like gauntlet. Another interesting idea would be multiple endings depending on how you handle the game sections.
I really wish I could play sports games from that era (all EA's NHL, NBA Live and John Madden from 94 to 98). I know EA is lazy and we can use emulators and Roms in PC but I want those games in my Switch...and Rock 'n Roll Racing please ;)
I thought that beat em up part is a separate game... Would you guys or (anyone else) know of a good beat em up on the Switch that is like this one but a whole game? Going down the street, weapons, co-op. Looking at Raging Justice, it's like the 28th on the search list but the first that looks like the kind I want. I miss the 90's more than the 80's though but I could settle for pixel art. But those are the best damn games to play co-op I think. I remember something from the original Play Station, just remember the fun, but not the game.
Thanks for the suggestion! I might check that out too, but for now Raging Justice looks best to me even after looking at all the list. Waiting for that payday...:)
I like the initial concept, but I don't get why in 2020, developers still haven't taken advantage of modern technology with retro games like these. I was expecting an epic scale adventure game that fused these genres into a massive title. At this point in history, something like that can be done while still being minimalistic. It's disappointing to have a gripping tale and just have such a short time playing these genres with no connection.
Ultimately a disappointment. Of the 5 games the best one is the space shooter, which sadly only lasts about 7 minutes. The brawler is way too short and shallow. The outrun clone is pretty but ultimately is just a cutscene. The ninja game is decent but again.... way too short... the dungeon crawler is just a pain to play through and that’s where I gave up and watched the ending on UA-cam. The visuals and presentation are awesome but there’s hardly any actual gaming here.
Looks interesting stylistically, but I am weary of titles that are so openly derivative. Theres a hollowness, never seems to be as good as the source material and just leaves me unfulfilled

@SwitchUp: Great review as always. I am really tempted to help you by reviewing obscure games such as this one. Do you have any interest in more writers that review a game or two per month for you to present on this channel?
Any chance you guys will do the fighting section as a full game? You have done wonders with the animation 🤩🥳

What a rare gem of a decade and century in my opinion

Theres never enough nostalgia imo 😅
I grew up in the 80’s but this (in a good way) definitely captures the early 90’s console games, in my opinion. Gonna grab it asap!
I wish the whole game was just the streets of rage part. I need a cool beat em up to play coz streets of rage 4 seems like it’s an eternity away
It launched
I wasn’t a teen until the 90s but I remember the 80s quarter stealers. Might have to get this 😀

Great review as alway's Glen, look's a grand game. But man I just want Street's Of Rage 4 already
Me too mate! Glen
I’m getting serious 90’s vibes from some of these mini games, however looks fun and will prob pick it up on Switch. Nice review 👍
Thank you!
Yeah definitely the beatemup has a final fight feel to it . And the ninja game reminds me of the old Ninja Gaiden games.
As soon as I seen the trailer that was it for me the hardest part was the wait lol 80's arcades what more can you ask for 😄
