  • Streaming dominates how we consume content, but physical media like vinyl, DVDs, and Blu-rays is making a surprising comeback. This shift reflects a growing appreciation for quality, tangibility, and ownership in an increasingly digital world. From the superior audio and video quality of analog formats to the nostalgia of collecting physical items, the resurgence of physical media challenges the convenience of digital streaming. Discover why more people are turning to vinyl records, Blu-ray collections, and other physical formats for their entertainment and how this trend is reshaping modern media consumption.
    --
    Correction:
4:05 Blu-rays and 4K UHD discs do indeed use compression. However, they still offer significantly higher bitrates and better quality than most streaming services.

How many movies, older than 50 years old, have you watched? How many video games?
Ultimately, I don't think we need to keep everything, all the time, forever. We're just hoarding at that point. I think it's perfectly fine that future generations make new things, and experience new things, instead of having everything *we* like shoved down their throats as "required experiences".
If everyone raved about it, then it was good, and it fostered good memories, and ideally good times with other people... and now it's time for other thing and other experiences.

I never stopped buying physical media. I only used streaming as a supplement to my collection, until I got fed up with way content is being presented to you on the services. It doesn't help that content is now jumping from platform to platform either. So for the last about 1½ year I've been living without Netflix/Max/whatever, and only used Spotify for music. When it comes to music I support the artists I really like by going to their concerts if possible, and buying their music on physical media if available. I'm even considering getting a tape deck again.
I have an ever growing collection of DVD, Blu-ray, UHD Blu-ray, LaserDisc, and a few VHS tapes. Sure, a lot of new stuff might not turn up on those formats, but then there's over 100 years of movies and TV shows that I can dive into, and never run out of stuff to run. My latest additions are Shawscope Vol 1 from Arrow, a collection of old martial arts movies, and two John Waters flicks.
Games is a very different story though. PC gamers have been living with digital distribution for about 20 years, and while physical media is still a thing on consoles, except for maybe Nintendo games, I don't think you can count on the entire gaming being on a disc because it's so common that a major patch or update drops on day 1, fixing all the stuff that wasn't fixed before the discs were pressed. On PC the only real way to make sure you don't lose the game, is to get it on GOG, and back it up yourself.

in my school they're calling this new period "l'economie d'usage" (economy of use in french), and it can be beneficial to the planet, like for renting out sports gear from a store and returning it when you no longer have a use for it, reducing overconsumption and if the gear is maintained well, leads to far less waste when disposed of at its end of life or forgotten and even recycled, repaired or reused, it even was in my final exams, I answered it wasn't a perfect all around solution as it can easily be abused by companies and media and digital goods could disappear because of it.

    • @SRose-vp6ew
      @SRose-vp6ew 7 місяців тому

Have you ever considered that your school is indoctrinating you with their bias and denying you access to all the information that you should have access to in order to actually reason through issues or even see it the “issues” you heard about are the real issue? It’s proven that Disney will even alter the content of their movies or deny your access to the original content. This is easily proven when you own the original VHS and watch how corporations and even our schools gaslight and manipulate people to control them and push their biased. A prime example of how corporations like Disney censor and manipulate people both by their streaming services or how manipulation of previously owned property is used to indoctrinate in education would be how It’s hard for people to gain access to Song of the South (you know, Zip-A-Dee-Doo-Dah’s movie). This was a (boring) movie based on a book about a true story of a positive black story teller that taught the black and white children good morals together and the bad guys were bad and the good guys were good and the learning learned. There’s absolutely nothing racist about it. The black actors in the movie were proud of the work they did. Disney not only canceled them, but slandered them and their work with few people having access to the primary sources needed so that you’re able to defend them and the truth. Disney is denying access to Song of the South. And college campuses are repeating the same indoctrination videos that repeatedly tell people that because of the main characters “Christ like forgiveness” during the time of reconstruction people shouldn’t be allowed to watch it. Librarians have even removed this video and are trained in Library school not to give people access to it. There’s actually nothing wrong with the video that makes it even more terrifying that this is being done. Yes, a black man being “too Christ like” is a stated reason, but there are also other nonsensical reasons they state such as a movie that was made part cartoon for children being cartoonish and not showing racial divide and animosity where there isn’t forgiveness. However, the truth of the matter is this was based on a true story and also during the reconstructive era was the Azusa Street revival that had black and white people together seeking holiness and the Holy Spirit bringing in the modern day charismatic and Pentecostal movement with racial unity and peace. Millions were led by the one eyed black man in California that didn’t preach racial unity, he preached relationship with God and being a temple for the Holy Spirit rather than going on about how his parents were slaves. In the same way, many people are made very fearful by what they have access to and what they are not allowed access to. Long before the president of the United States was censored for saying let’s peacefully go where we are peacefully allowed to go, certain people have been tremendously censored to the point of shocking outcomes the bot still won’t let me comment on. Just this week 350 political prisoners of America were deemed to be held unconsciously, that’s first page news that I bet you didn’t hear about. What has been called science is only a selected amount of scientist pushing what’s to be pushed. I can tell you for a fact by our family working in medical science that in 2020/2021, we were told what the bias was to push and not to question or test anything else and It’s no secret that millions were forced under arrest to do what they didn’t feel was necessarily best thanks to government advice that wasn’t necessarily the most scientific. Does that sound right to you? You might be told that certain things are good for others or the environment because of A B and C reasons, but have you actually ever looked into and researched if they’re feeding you a bunch of crap or not? You can’t look at clips from the primary source you have to actually go to the primary source and stop listening with the interpretation. They’ve told you to hear it with. A lot of people look at the past 4000 years of climate change and we don’t blame current situations on it. But you’re not taught that are you? In fact, the bias you’re probably taught is that those who stand against rapid climate change caused by aerosol hairspray, and non-chemical laden paper straws are reality deniers or some other ad hominem as you battle straw men as trained. Careful, many people are starting to see their degree put their education and access to truth at risk. Bias quickly pushed in our formidable years by the so called (self-proclaimed) experts from (self-proclaimed) trustworthy sources had reasonable enough and logical enough reasoning always sounds like the truth, but that doesn’t mean that it’s the truth. The truth is always black-and-white. Yes there are many facets to ever issue, but the simple, black and white truth always exist on every single facet. The second someone tries to push a gray, they are pushing a lie. Keep access to primary sources. Don’t think that bias fact, checkers are going to be giving you facts. There are a lot of people who humbled to the truth, and at first it was pretty humbling, now the truth is empowering because finally, there’s a clarity that had always been lacking with the people who pushed their gray lies and denied you access to the original documents always telling you to instead trust what they were telling you about them. I’m saying a lot, but when it comes to research, even the news will repeat, the summary called the abstract, but they’re not looking at the actual study, the way it was done, or who paid for it. I know that sounds dramatic when people say it, but it’s the truth. If you’re listening to the popular teachings on how to be green, you don’t know how to be green because Science is testable, observable, and repeatable, most theories pushed as the truth are just beliefs and any testing attempted was probably biased towards the results, those paying for the study wanted to see. 🤷🏽‍♀️

I think the difference is also that in most of your examples the objects are still physical, and that they’re rented, not “owned… but the company has the right to delete them at any time”. So for instance I borrow a *lot* of books, CDs and DVDs from my local library (a free service btw), but if I like an item so much that I want to buy it for myself, I can do it, because what I borrowed had a physical form to start with. I think a library economy / économie d’usage would indeed be good for the environment, but it’s not really what those streaming companies aim for. The channel Andrewism has a good video about library economy btw if you want to learn more. Et félicitations pour ton exam :D

Yes, public libraries are the best way forward here. It provides a huge collection of physical media that you have perpetual access to without the huge cost and waste and storage requirements of owning thousands of the discs yourself. You can own your favorites and use the library for everything else, like stuff you only watch once a year or two. Most of us only watch the discs very rarely anyway and have a sentimental connection to a small few. This simultaneously solves that problem and also the sustainability problem of production of millions of petrochemical plastic discs and boxes that end up collecting dust on people’s shelves for years before ending up as waste in landfills for the next thousand years.

Around the time that Paper Mario: Sticker Star was released (released in 2012) I had heard of Paper Mario and how much praise the first two entries of the franchise were getting
Unfortunately the only method for me to play the first two Paper Mario games would be to buy two different used consoles just to play two different used games, or figure out how to pirate both games
I only got to play Paper Mario 64 and The Thousand Year Door thanks to Nintendo Online and the remake of TTYD for Switch
Chrono Trigger is another game that I heard is a highly rated must play game but I haven’t been able to get my hands on a used copy for a console I already own as of yet

A good example of lost games are believe it or not, the first 5 Touhou games.
Being that they all released on PC-98, were exclusive to JP, and were likely limited release at launch due to Touhou not taking off until later combined with ZUN losing the source code, the ONLY way to play the original 5 Touhou games is through emulation. This fate would’ve extended to even the iconic three Touhou games (EoSD, PCB, IN) without the reprints. Hell, Touhou 9 (PoFV) just narrowly avoided becoming lost, ZUN just found it one day.

@typemasters2871 Chrono trigger is pretty hard to find these days. All of the copies of that game are extremely expensive, no matter the port. The only way to find affordable copies is to buy the Japanese versions but then you need to know the language. If you want an official way to play it they did release a port on steam that is based on the mobile port, which was terrible at first but got patched to be a bit better now.
Other than that onky emulation is a realistic choice if you don't want to spend over 100 on a single game

Every time I go to Netflix I see one of my favorite movies/series and then get jumpscared by seeing that I only have like 9 or more or less days left before Netflix says „okay screw y‘all you will never see it again!“ Now never seeing it again is too much like it will comeback like after 5 or so years but still! Also like mentioned in the video it’s special to have it in your hand and knowing it has things like behind the scenes and such. I love it.

So far I’ve spent hundreds on DVDs I will continue to do so streaming services are good to a point but the subscription service way of life is getting very annoying. I’d absolutely love if video rental stores would return. I absolutely support the revival of physical media!!!

I’ve always loved my collection, got VHS, Laserdiscs, DVD, Bluray
And music I got cassettes and records
Doesn’t matter if real or bootleg, I like owning the stuff I pay for, some cuts of films are not on other formats. Such as the extended cut of Braindead (1992) on Japanese Laserdisc, I have the NC-17 cut of Kill Bill on Japanese DVD, I’ve always loved my physical media.

Hopefully physical media doesn’t disappear, it might fall a bit more but I have to much distrust in putting all of the power in big businesses to control the media we own.

This is why you download your media on an SSD or Flash drive where it can still be copied and played as many times as you want. I'm not saying streaming doesn't have its place but Physical media allows you to have ownership without having to constantly be online just to watch one movie. I like CDs just to hear a specific album on a physical format, the one benefit of CDs is burning your downloaded music on it. I was surprised when my car's head unit was able to play .flac files on it even though the cd player rejected a few times before actually reading the disc, and this is on an 04 Oldsmobile.

Life long vinyl collector here….when ever my former coworkers were pushing Spotify etc…..I said no thanks I have 1000 albums I think it will take the rest of my life to listen to them all. I do have some of them in MP3 form so I can put them on my swimming headphones. The only music I download is that which I cannot find a physical copy of, or to expand the digital classic music library that I listen to when I am reading.

I made a speech about the importance of tactical media back in 8th grade during Drama class, and it’s surprising how I’m seeing the importance of preserving media is more important than ever after over a year now. I’m a sophomore in high school, and I’ve made a small collection of DVDs/CDs (mostly DVDs) of things I for the most part like. I think that it’s easier to just get tactical media so that way you can watch it on your own terms, be able to preserve it well enough, and it doesn’t require the internet.

I’m not complaining, DVD’s and blue ray go for 0,50 cent- 1 Euro in thrift shops over here. So 1-2 times a month I go by a couple and come home with a couple of dozens.
When I have seen them and think them not good enough to keep i take them to the office where we have a share cabinet. I put it there, we put in books, DVD, etc for others to take home. Anyone can take or bring what they like.

I seem to have places where I prefer one or the other. For stationary consoles I still prefer physical media, where that media can be stored with the console.
However, for mobile consoles I've begun gravitating towards digital media due to the hassle of trying to carry around and keep track of large amounts of tiny cartridges.
I also play digital games on my computer, as well.
One major problem I've noticed with physical media though is that it's just a hassle to transport and store when you have large amounts of it.

I remember my games for PS or Xbox the booklets inside and others with cheat codes etc and fun little things in them, you’d flip them around to find out other things, music cds getting the artwork out inside and hanging it on the wall! A poster unique to only what a buyer would have! Meaning you was a true fan, my friends wanted my slipknot posters because I bought all the cds😂but they knew I had them because l had bought all the CDs!!
Dvds not so much things inside but falling in love with the picture on the front! Cracking open the case and pressing the little doobly doo in the middle to get out the dvd and waiting for it to slide in was so cool!

Excellent video! I’ve been increasingly advocating for physical games over the last few years, especially with titles like Alan Wake II concerning me.
It’s also nice to see indie games getting physical releases as well, preserving an increasingly-important section of the industry. I just wish it was as available to consumers as AAA games, instead of being treated as a niche.

Physical media could benefit from a more robust format. It’s hard to say whether my cheap little dvds will play 20 years from now, but physical media like records are back with a vengeance because they are collectible, feel cool, and long lasting. If you made blu ray disks 3x as heavy, and metal, they’d sell for double the price they are now.

There are DVDs that are over 25 years old that still work and play to this day. And there are music CDs that are much older than that. Of course there are certain exceptions, but as long as they are well stored and maintained physical media will last a life time.

I had my troubles with streaming from the start cuz the regional licensing is mostly pretty random and you can pay for 3 streaming accounts and still don't find what you are looking for, so... I never stopped buying blu-rays if those are movies/shows that are dear to me
I'm glad people are waking up to that again ^^
