Wyler wasn't afraid to explore more controversial themes with the gradual loosening of film standards that began with the advent of the '60s. "The Collector" is dark and brilliant! It blew me away. "The Children's Hour" is a quintessential document of its period and another unheralded masterpiece. Wyler, at least nowadays, is an underrated director. He's one of the greats to come out of Hollywood's Golden Age!.
Just found your channel, man. I like your delivery. You're not one of these over the top youtubers. Soft spoken, straightforward and knowledgeable. Subscribed.
You don't make enough videos. Yours is the only blu ray channel that is so deeply in love with discovering cinema. I sometimes rewatch your videos just for recommendations on what to watch next.
I highly recommend everyone look into the indicator release Bellman and True! It is a super obscure 80s British heist film, only 347 logs on Letterboxd! It completely blew me away. The first half is fairly standard, but once the heist starts it turns into one of the most tense and thrilling final hours of a film I’ve seen. If you like Rififi, The Killing, or The Asphalt Jungle then this hidden gem is for you! I also highly recommend Scum, The Last Movie, Irreversible, Taste of Fear, and The China Syndrome. All of those were 5 out of 5’s for me.
Arthouse Interiors I'll check out Bellman And True! Surprised I've not heard of it as I've seen a ton of British films from the 80's. I love Scum it's one of my favourite British films. Along with The Long Good Friday, Ice Cold In Alex, and a few others. I highly recommend you watch the 80's British film Made In Britain. The remastered blu ray that comes with the blu ray Tales Of Our School David Leland Boxset.
Thanks again! Still haven't seen Gardens of Stone, but it has been on my short list since the recent passing of James Caan. I will seek out the Indicator version. As for Winter Kills - the movie was all over the map! Sometimes a bizarre comedy, sometimes a dark conspiracy thriller, etc. But it has a pair of great performances by Richard Boone and Anthony Perkins, and they are worth the price of any disc!
I loved Gardens of Stone when I saw it at the cinema. I had no idea about the back story. Joseph Losey is one of my favorite directors and Dirk Bogarde is my favorite actor. Great list Elliot, thank you.
I love me some Indictator.....one of the best labels and they constantly release really interesting films packed with loads of special features to help add that extra appreciation and education.
GREAT idea for a vid (I've just finished editing and uploading mine for tomorrow) and we have identical first picks! It must be a strong recommendation then. Excellent picks although Winter Kills is on my unwatched pile so I'll have to manoveur it upwards! I especially love The Collector. Its absolutely terrific and for a film that is basically a two hander, the time flies by in suspense. Great start to the sale season!
I got a bunch of stuff during the Indicator sale including Time Without Pity. I'm in the same boat with Joseph Losey. I've watched a number of his films the past couple years and been really into them! My favorite so far is definitely The Servant! I also got The Collector, which I've seen before, though it's only the standard edition that's available now. And I love Bunny Lake Is Missing! I don't have the Indicator release, just a Twilight Time one from a number of years ago.
If you like The Collector, I would recommend picking up Arrow's Blu-ray release of Blind Beast by Yasuzo Masumura. It’s about a blind sculptor who kidnaps his muse and keeps her in his dark studio warehouse filled with giant sculptures of female body parts. It’s similar to The Collector, but darker and more surreal.
Bunny Lake Is Missing is from a unique 4K transfer that is vastly superior to the previous transfer available streaming. I highly recommend The Pumpkin Eater (an absolute classic) and The Third Secret, an interesting film, that is available here on YT if you want to try before you buy.
I had always heard of "the collector" with Terrence stamp. As i always question where/how actors r known, and the collector always seems to pop up when asking about Stamps early days on film. Thanks for the insight!
My Indicator collection has reached 44 now: Freud Fanatic Experiment in Terror Missing Diary of a Mad Housewife Modern Romance A Day in the Death of Joe Egg Charlie Bubbles The Reckoning Cisco Pike Hoffman Black Joy 90° in the Shade Bartleby Eve Orphans Ministry of Fear The Reckless Moment The National Health Otley Lilith Fat City Track 29 Housekeeping Little Murders Oleanna Charley Varrick The Pumpkin Eater The Third Secret The Front Ship of Fools Resurrected 10 Rillington Place The Last Movie Age of Consent Bunny Lake is Missing Christine Scum Birdy The Missionary The Passenger The Last Detail Blue Collar The Effect of Gamma Rays on Man-in-the-Moon Marigolds
Is the Winter Kills transfer the same as the Kino Lorber from a couple of years ago? Paranoid political thrillers were a staple of the 70s. I've never seen Bunny Lake is Missing, but I own the soundtrack because it features rock legends The Zombies.

Was just thinking. Incredible how high the quality of his films were over the years. Underrated for sure

Seen it and agree it's a great film worth anyones time.

Thanks for the recommends! Picked up a handful of them in the current Indicator sale!

Great recommendations pal! I'm totally getting Winter Kills in the sale after you mentioned Southland Tales. Thanks for sharing 👍

Indicator are the best out there, absolutely knocking it out of the park at the moment
Thanks for sharing! I had not heard of any of these.

Great recommendations Elliot! Certainly will be grabbing a few of these titles. Cheers pal!
Cash on Demand starring Peter Cushing is one of my favourites!
Nice array of films. Great video.
The 1934 Phantom of the Monastery is a Mexican horror film with lots of atmosphere. It has been released by Powerhouse Indicator!
Just wondering. Are all these criterion and indicator cases the same size as Blu rays cases?
I love Bunny Lake is Missing - one of my favourite Indicator releases. I might pick up Modern Romance soon - it's £6.99 in the latest sale.
Wonderful. I wonder if Indicator films are part of the Barnes and Noble sales…I would buy all of these movies…

I found Winter People with Kurt Russell. Excellent film. Goes from 55 to 104 dollars on DVD.
I had always heard of "the collector" with Terrence stamp. As i always question where/how actors r known, and the collector always seems to pop up when asking about Stamps early days on film. Thanks for the insight!
Have you seen Voices (1973)? Echoes of Don't Look Now so I hear.
Wish I'd seen this before I put an order in the latest sale (although I already own Winter Kills)! May put another order in...
The Collector, 1965, is skillfully directed and acted.
Great video as always.
And this time it didn't end up costing me anything as I have all of these :-D
Well you sold me on Winter Kills for having Toshiro Mifune in it!
How about To Sir with Love, a great indicator release.

Bunny lake is missing is awesome . wonder if that inspired the jody foster film where her daughter is missing on the plane.
i don't know if you heard but indicator now releases in U.S but they still haven't re-released there region b releases
Surprised you didn't mention Coppola's THE CONVERSATION, which is seldom discussed and really is a masterpiece.
It's not an Indicator release.
Nice timing with the sale starting tomorrow!
Nice collection.
on Indicator, I covet THE LAST DETAIL and FAT CITY.
Two gems.
Elliot, where are your standard release blu rays? Do you not own there will be blood, pulp fiction, one flew over the cuckoo’s nest…?
