Two weeks after this episode aired, RATM would cause controversy and grief to the BBC in the first of their two instances when DJ Bruno Brookes accidentally played the full uncensored version of “Killing in the Name” as a new entry at #27 on BBC RADIO 1’s UK Top 40 Countdown show at 5:00 PM on a Sunday evening on the 21st February 1993. Little did Brookes know he was recording an advertisement for next week’s countdown whilst Zack screamed out “Fuck You I Won’t Do what you tell me! (X16) Mother Fucker!” over the airwaves and Brookes announced the next song without any apology, prompting 138 angry phone calls of complaints from offended listeners. This resulted in Brookes being suspended from hosting the countdown for a week and BBC 2 prompting to censor RATM’s performance of “Bullet in the Head” which contained the repeated use of the word “Motherfucker” on The Late Show’s “No Nirvana” Alternative Rock special which aired two days later on the 23rd of February 1993.
