Haha the singing is hilarious but the guitar playing is out of this world. The king. This is before all the metal shredders too, this guy was a beast and a half.
What an amazing player... a telecaster (a wood stick with 6 steel wires, tone & volume knobs an nothing more) and his fingers. Beautiful, hard and strong.
His cover of "Hey Joe" sounds, smells, and tastes like whiskey and gun powder!!And to have John Harrison("screwdriver zombie from 1978's Dawn Of The Dead" ) on bass guitar just kicks ass!!
A legand like Roy Buchanan should not ever be forgotton ,a massive contribution to that era of music ,when that guitar touches your soul you know you,ve listened to one of the greatest guitarists that ever lived ,the real deal
My brother, a good friend and I saw Roy perform this song and many others in Bean Town back in the 70's...he did three encores...we were smoking hash/tobacco joints right in the audience indoor...
Yes, but he put everything he needed to say in every note, and did it very well.. unlike most guitarists who play.. but have nothing substantial to say. RIP Roy.. top 3 guitar player of ALL time.
master of tone and volume control..roy gets that tele just cying and sighing...love the triple picking long runs..he sure has a style that is almost hypnotizing at points..but im a guitar player..i dont know if he has this effect on normal ppl that dont play and cant see the simple beuty or intense brilliance in a roy riff.mabey this is why he was not big commercial act..
Amen. I 1st saw Roy at Electric Ballrom in Dallas about the same time this vid was filmed. A friend did a promotional deal for Sound Warehouse, got free tickets and a backstage pass. We had a few beers backstage with Roy and the band. It was awesome. He was such an incredible player and he made the listener feel every note just as he did. DAMN I miss him. Thank God his music lives on. Jeff Beck said Roy was the best blues player ever. What a huge compliment coming from another incredible player.
I met Roy b 4 he performed back stage. We were the 1st one in the club. I was 12 my Brother was 10 and he was a real gentleman how I asked was he Roy Buchanan? He was relaxing in a comfy chair. No-one else was in the room. He smiled saying yes I am. We asked if that was his guitar case. He got up and showed us his guitar We said wow. Ok. Thanks Roy for letting us see you. Well go back. He said ok. Enjoy the show. Just a gentle nice friendly vibe in that small scenario we picked up from him. One of the greatest in the world R.I.P. ROY
ok- as I read the posts below - at least a couple of people mentioned SRV. Why compare - there are many fantastic guitar players - past & present - that produce / perform magic as they play. I don't compare , I just enjoy talent when I see it..... Roy forever...........
This man was a MONSTER on the Tele. Hendrix would approve heartily and want to shake his hand after witnessing this performance. No doubt they have been jamming in the great beyond.
Roy!! I feel like had Hendrix lived, they would have collaborated and the trajectory of Roy's career and life would've been very different. Even still, Roy's work stands alone, he's an incredible guitarist!!
another musical genius that died to early & unrecognized except by others in the music business. Most listeners have sadly never been exposed to his style and talent.
his guitar playing sounds sleepy and angry :0... not that it's bad, it's amazing music but you can definitely hear his dark side coming through... maybe it's just that I know how he passed so i'm being biased, but he gets reeeeaally into the intense emotions that sound like screaming madness on guitar. Anyone else feel this way?
Camera work Sucks. They just didn't get it right did they. Idiots. Roy is terrific and stilll can't get over what he did to himself. One of the greatest.
He needed better management. One thing he should have done is cover Hendrix more. He was one of the few guitarists with the chops to make it interesting, and Hendrix wasn't around to cover himself. The crowd likes Hendrix tunes better than bar band blues. Worked for SRV.
After listening to his whole 30 minute concert. It felt like I was subconsciously abducted by aliens, and they injected 4000 notes into my brain simultaneously.
one of the best 35min masterclasses in heavenly tele precise perfection with roy and his guitar talking emotionally as one to us .. im 60 listened to hat 35min prob 1000 times .. never sick of it ...
Not comparing as everyone 'borrows' & learns from other players. Hendrix spent significant time in Nashville w/Billy Cox early to mid-60's. Also Roy B. playing with Ronnie Hawkins' Hawks? You're welcome Robbie Robertson!
Haha the singing is hilarious but the guitar playing is out of this world. The king. This is before all the metal shredders too, this guy was a beast and a half.
That is the first time that I see Roy Buchaman and I can say that this prestation of "hey joe" have make me fall on the ass!
One of the greatest of all time
What an amazing player... a telecaster (a wood stick with 6 steel wires, tone & volume knobs an nothing more) and his fingers. Beautiful, hard and strong.
Roy is A TELECASTER!
But he needed knobs.
His cover of "Hey Joe" sounds, smells, and tastes like whiskey and gun powder!!And to have John Harrison("screwdriver zombie from 1978's Dawn Of The Dead" ) on bass guitar just kicks ass!!
Not many people can take a masterpiece, and surpass levels which by today standards are unheard of!
A legand like Roy Buchanan should not ever be forgotton ,a massive contribution to that era of music ,when that guitar touches your soul you know you,ve listened to one of the greatest guitarists that ever lived ,the real deal
This takes Stevie Ray Vaughn to school. Amazing techniques that no one else was doing at that time.
My brother, a good friend and I saw Roy perform this song and many others in Bean Town back in the 70's...he did three encores...we were smoking hash/tobacco joints right in the audience indoor...
The way he played his guitar, he took you on a journey through space, the universe and back to earth.
Roy was the best R I P my friend
Holy Shit, cant believe i didnt listen to roy before. Now im going to get into him more often now.
It tells everything about the magazine's capacity to understand who is good and who is bad..................
Yes, but he put everything he needed to say in every note, and did it very well.. unlike most guitarists who play.. but have nothing substantial to say. RIP Roy.. top 3 guitar player of ALL time.

I love how Roy doesn't give a damn about actually singing- he lets his guitar do it all.
I believe he hypnotized everyone in that place, 'cos what he played was more just the music
Amen. I 1st saw Roy at Electric Ballrom in Dallas about the same time this vid was filmed. A friend did a promotional deal for Sound Warehouse, got free tickets and a backstage pass. And to think I only heard his name for the first time tonight,it makes me sad for all I missed.Amazing ♥
it just doesn't get any better than this... end of story.
Roy really knows the guitar like back of his hand im impressed he is undoubtedly one of the all time best guitar players
brought me to tears, awsesome
Great post Cheerdown, RB is one of those I tend to forget then remember and its like a shot going through me.......

AWESOMEE!!!!!
Well, this song speaks for itself of how relaxing it is the blues, healthy ... and sentimental ... Greetings from Venezuela to the house of blues
truly a great loss to music

This man was a MONSTER on the Tele. Hendrix would approve heartily and want to shake his hand after witnessing this performance. No doubt they have been jamming in the great beyond.

天才!!genius!! Roy Buchanan
This is what a PRO in action looks like.
ロイ有り難う、貴方のお陰で、天でロックが認められた。
Roy!! I feel like had Hendrix lived, they would have collaborated and the trajectory of Roy's career and life would've been very different. Even still, Roy's work stands alone, he's an incredible guitarist!!
Ha! I concur! To be fair to Austin City Limits, this was one of their first shows in the first season.
This man is NOT mentioned in the Rolling Stone Magazine list "100 Greatest Guitarists of all Time."
It's Rolling Stone...Pop trash
Best live cover of Hey Joe ever...
Boy, could he make that guitar sing!!!
Great player to say the least
master.....
oh totally, you hit that on the head.
You should check out that video where Roy plays with Lonnie Mack and Albert Collins.
Two of SRV's influences.
Les cadreurs de l époque s en taper de la technique de jeu...... incroyable
@msstevie1951 I'm glad for you ! Try Robbin Ford and the blue line .too.
beyond bad-ass.
another musical genius that died to early & unrecognized except by others in the music business. Most listeners have sadly never been exposed to his style and talent.
Everytime I hear this performance, I get sad for Jimi
his guitar playing sounds sleepy and angry :0... not that it's bad, it's amazing music but you can definitely hear his dark side coming through... maybe it's just that I know how he passed so i'm being biased, but he gets reeeeaally into the intense emotions that sound like screaming madness on guitar. Roy sometimes played the guitar, while other times he attacked it.
You obviously haven't heard his other tunes. Try some
Soul Dressing, enough said!
Blistering 🎸🤘
7:06 Yes Sir.
@bornburied
That's why Jeff dedicated Cause we've ended as lovers to him. You can find that in the liner notes of Blow by blow.
@dyskover Awesome man, envy you :)
🖤
Speak softly... and carry a BIG STICK!
How everyone so chill? I couldn't stop my leg at 3:28
a Tele in roy's hands was as much a part of him as gloves on Ali.
well now i have to look up albert king because i love srv and buchanan blows beck away

זצ"ל...
At first I thought that note at 0:45 was actually a woman's scream from the audience! :-D
the way he makes the guitar whale at times..
Not comparing as everyone 'borrows' & learns from other players. Hendrix spent significant time in Nashville w/Billy Cox early to mid-60's. Also Roy B. playing with Ronnie Hawkins' Hawks? You're welcome Robbie Robertson!
One of the greatest pickers most unknowned player.Don't really know why he took his own life.
The strange thing is... HE DOES IT WITHOUT ... THEATRICS!!
