Why do they teach us proper piano posture when almost no one uses proper posture 💀 I get it i have to know the rules in order to break them stop telling me 😭
I had the honor of seeing Bill Evans in a little jazz club in Chicago shortly before he died. We were right down front, and when the set ended, we approached him to tell him how much we appreciated his playing. He apologized, and said he was having a bad night! A bad night for Bill Evans would blow the doors off most of the jazz pianists in the world!
Many jazz folks today (teachers and students alike) think the magic is in the scales, chords, voicings, etc. but it actually has nothing to do with any of that. It's in the heart and in the soul.
You need the scales, chords and voicings to put your soul out there. The great players knew that which is why some, like Coltrane, were practicing the most mundane things every waking hour. Coltrane knew that was a means to an end though. Not an ends in and of itself.
@@iliyajavadian I mean nothing by this, but you bring up something interesting. Watching some Barry Harris UA-cam videos, I discovered that Barry Harris hated Bill Evans' playing with a passion.

Eddie Gomez, heard here in this video, was an incredible accompanist to Bill and many others. His virtuosic technique was more an uplifting counterpoint that even added a percussive element at times, whereas Scott’s stylings were coupled with his patented warm tone and harmonically complex interplay with Bill. Scott certainly was the first to set this lofty standard. Nonetheless, Bill had extremely good taste with choosing bass players. Chuck, Gary & Marc were all mind blowing in their own ways.

So, my father was a jazz pianist in the 50s. He taught us nothing about music, and nothing about jazz. I guess his philosophy was we would do what we were interested in regardless of his efforts because that’s how his life had been. Plus, made it a lot easier on him to remain saturated with the jazz purity he so craved. I know there was bop, bee bop, cool jazz, etc., and seems like a lot a great players from the same time did not really mix up their styles, or play together much at all. This all breaks down when it comes to miles, where everyone can mumble and agree. I know, I should read a book a by this time, but I grew up in the shade of this, and just want to ask for a synopsis. For instance, where do guys like Tristan’s/warne marshe/Lee school of music fit in with bill evans? It’s not geography. Is it the color? Are the black guys not listening to the white players? Were the white guys shitting all over the black guys, over and above appropriating the art form? It’s just never the jazz guys, always these 6 jazz guys, or those 3 jazz guys, all representing some portion of the jazz scene. And what about improv? Meant everything to my father and I’ve heard say other, dare I say competing, jazz guys performed studied pieces for recordings and performances, at least some of the time. It’s all exhausting. Bill evans is a super cool player, he kind of backs into every tune. Anyway, just an observation from one ignorant corner of the jazz galaxy. My dad’s long dead and I’m in my late 60s. I guess it is just all about the music, the politics of the day to an extent, and the fact that jazz players really have strong preferences about their band mates, of course. I’m not too fond of my father’s music, to be honest. Doesn’t talk to me, move me. Weird being a jazz musicians’ kid who try’s to understand but gets no assistance. Jazz is like pornography in that no one can really define it for you, but you will know it when you feel it. Ok, sorry. Carry on.
Ah! I was going to ask if it was recorded in Sweden (judging only by the look of the building and the landscape). Finland is close enough. Nordic cool.
