It absolutely baffles me how you make such masterful content, AND make it this accessible. Just want to say a massive thank you for inspiring and helping so many new artists, including myself!
That happens all the time when you write lines with your mouse. That's why after I draw the main idea I play it with a midi keyboard after. Then you get all these tasty notes in a more natural way, IMO. Very good reminder by the way. As you said, sometimes you get too lazy. Great content as always!
after listening to the examples on both headphones and just phone speaker, the biggest difference is that the longer lead notes don't let the bass notes poke through as much or as independently. Giving the bassline some room to breathe and some notes poking through between lead notes also is another element of bounciness to a track. Great video, I learned a lot.
I wasn't able to guess that it was the note length that was different, but I noticed that the second examples always sounded much cleaner to me; so I guess the gaps from the shortened note lengths was making it sound less messy/more clear? Maybe it's just me 😅 Great insight as always! 👌
Hey, love your channel and the content you share, I always pick up a new nugget of dance music know how., cheers.! That 2nd example you shared reminded me of the piano riff from ASHA - J.J. Tribute, very similar sounding to my ears. After listening to the riff.....you got my head bopping along to the rhythm and my brain sparking with creative ideas. Thanks so much. Peace!
Great content! I was stumbling over this topic now and then anyway but never managed to see the connections in such a detailed and direct manner by myself.
I have always been taught in electronic genres to sidechain everything to the kick, especially have the bass at 100%/ducking 100%. But I notice in this video that you haven’t sidechained the bass in the disco track or the piano in the piano house track. Why? I always sidechain all elements when I have a 4 on 4 kick to get that rolling/pumping sound otherwise the drop can sound too familiar with the verses, breaks or build up. Would be interesting to hear your take on this!
Yes I side chain most things usually, bass for headroom and the rest for groove. The bass is side chained on the disco track, that's what the multiband is doing. I didn't think it warranted a separate sub track as I didn't need 'club' bottom end on that track, but I still needed to sidechain the different frequencies . Re the piano there may be a sidechain on a group or I might not have needed one. Sometimes if I'm going for a more old school groove I don't use a side chain because they didn't.
Well it's usually just a case of having a dreamy performance , then adding free Roth Air, and either Free reverb Endless or Dragonfly hall... Possibly a good self TZ flanging tape delay like Nastydelay by VOS
Hey Bthelick, I really appreciate your videos. You seem very knowledgeable, more so than most other teachers on youtube. It seems you come from years and years of legitimate music industry and production experience. Maybe you could tell us more about your background sometime I'm always curious. Also, any ideas for a course you would launch?
One method of doing this, is if you can play chords or notes on a instrument (even if like myself it's only for two or three times). Is to make sure it's turned on before playing and then use the retrospective record feature in your DAW. This way you have human notes and velocities you can turn into a loop. You can also quantize as much or as little as you like.
What are you struggling with? Do you mean you don't understand the groove system in Ableton ? How to apply grooves to clips etc? Or more of the why and when?
While listening to the second sample, I thought that nothing has changed - that is, @Bthelick still brings the most value to UA-cam in the field of music production, LOL. High five!
Very good, thanks! Sorry I did ask before but I've lost your answer: what is the piano plug-in that you're using please? I love its sound. Also what reverb are you using on it? Thanks.
Absolutely I release everything! It's already in the queue. Short instrumentals go out first to make things easier legally then the other edits will follow 👊
Thanks Unfortunately I've been trying to make you a quick short reply for the last 2 days but all of UA-cam's tech is currently broken and doesn't work. The kick probably isn't what you think, there are two disco loops on top which are providing most of the flavor and "smack" , and that is probably the bulk of what you are hearing. The kick itself is pretty dull and short it's called thud from a pack called soul wave 3 . The top loops are "nightclub" from a Retro Strut pack, and "sweater" from an Oliver funk pack. The top loops are high passed at 200ish
@Bthelick Hi Bthelick, thanks for another great video! For the example with the Ample funky bass do you 1) layer with a sine wave sub? 2) Do you do any side chaining with the kick? I have always wondered with these types of basses thanks.
This time I didn't layer it. Real bass does sometimes need help in the subs as they can be 1st harmonic dominant, especially fender p basses. But this track I'm not going for 'club' bottom end, it's just a chill groove thing, so I decided it was good enough as is. I used the Ableton multiband to sidechain the different frequency bands though.
at 2:17 my guess is lenght of midi notes, those ghost (runup/transfer/flam notes) im not sure how to call them xD After second intro listening... could be a slight gate as well. but besically cleanup of sound.
Btw Ben, how did you create that plucky piano house bass? Is it just a simple saw wave with a low pass filter (that triggers on attack) and wider or is there more going on? Is the kick somehow also contributing to the feeling of wideness of the bass?
Thankyou. It's not mono. It is highly mono compatible though, because I make club music for a living and many clubs and especially festivals are mono playback.
Dear Bthelick, can you please make video on muddy-ness? Your examples sound clean, yet when I make music no matter what kick sample I select, or how I design my bass patches they always seem to require removal of frequencies at around 200hz!
Well most sounds do have fundamentals in that range so it is a common area of overlap. In truth I haven't had to think about it for a long time. Are you referencing?
when you do remakes e.g the Hayden James remake. How do you approach finding drum samples that sound similar or near identical? Do you just go through difference splice packs until something sounds close? I always find house top loops and shakers hard to replicate and kicks especially. Thanks so much!
Hey, yes it's mostly just searching splice and comparing. Kick drums are a little easier to hear if you can load them into a sampler and trigger them at will whilst listening to the ref , So having a collection already on your drive is preferable. But in general yes that's all it is. Ear training takes time but this is a great way to train it.
Could you tell me what VST you used to get that piano? I'm trying to find pianos of that type from 1990, and I only have the Korg M1 (plugin) best regards

where the silence in between the notes is even more important than the notes themselves
I believe both Mozart and Debussy said something similar yes

Elegant solution. Genius.
So she lied to me? Length does matter… 😂 absolutely love these videos man thank you
Also like to assign a slider control to the gate length when running a sequence out to a synth.
Why are your videos always Gold? This is becoming one of my fav music making channels.

Yes well spotted it's also good for mix space 👊
Great video. I learned this myself by tweaking note lengths until I liked the groove. Slides are important for acid grooves!
Man, I love that intro song😩Thank you for covering this specific topic! Amazing video as always!!

Just saying hi from the Netherlands and thanking you for another great vid
It's just like how musicians play their (real) instrument. That's why it is also so nice and natural for our ears .
i liked the longer note examples

How absolutely supremely helpful!! Definitely going to be trying some of this, especially the bass tips.
This great. first intro reminds me of RIDGE RACER aka rage racer. Be cool to have a disco house rage racer style tutorial
Great tip and explanation. Your videos are always so pleasing to watch, even for those that don't producing tracks.

Thanks. Have a look at my house bass video, that explains more on the writing side
Splendid video as always, one question Mr.B, does the mixing affecting the grooves ? (e.g. the decay, the release, the attack, etc)
Yes mixing definitely affects groove too. what you describe there is more like sound design , and yes that matters too.
Simple yet effective tip, thanks teach👌
Great video.from Belgium.🤗
These demos are epic!.. effect worked best for the 303 tune.. but hurt the piano and discovered one.

Do you have tips about hearing loss and damage duo to music production?
Do you mean damage that has already happened or preventative steps beforehand?
Yes, I got it right!
You are the best
Btw Ben, how did you create that plucky piano house bass? Is it just a simple saw wave with a low pass filter (that triggers on attack) and wider or is there more going on? Is the kick somehow also contributing to the feeling of wideness of the bass?

Is that 303 a hardware synth or a VST? If you don't mind me asking.
Same synth I use for everything, Just the free Vital!
I used the same set up I show in the Josh Wink video.

Can U tell next time bout accents in arrangement?
I'm not sure what you mean? Are you asking how to use the whole arrangement to make rhythmic accents?
