It's funny to listen to Ueck talking about what future stadiums would look like, in the year 2022 when SkyDome is actually obsolete and the Brewers play in a modern retractable roof stadium where he has his own section named after him.

Heck fans and broadcasters should be use to indoor ball games in Canada look at the big O in Montreal if there was. A rain delay I'm sure the roof would close quick
They just retro fitted the 72 or so engine that power it. Its like driving a 34 year old car with zero maintenance. Its #7 of age to all the stadiums in MLB. This happened a week or two after the place opened. Opening was delayed into the playing season by a construction strike the summer before and frankly was rushed to make the agreed opening date. The roof closing system was still being completed, and other things in the stadium were still being worked on ( the roof leaked), and could not yet be closed automatically. The closing system had to be worked manually and thus took longer. And the noise in the place when it closed was far bigger than this suggests... this is how we all expected the place to be run. Now the guy who decides to open it and runs the air canada schedule at the airport are the same guy. Oops, two clouds in the sky, divert all flights and keep the roof closed...
SkyDome opened in 1989. Safeco opened in 1999. Point is that there have been advances in retractable roof technology since SkyDome opened. Btw, I looked it up, Safeco field’s roof actually takes 10 minutes to open/close. Do some research before posting.
The roof it self is absolutely massive. Moving that much weight is a huge engineering feat. Because of that, no new technology was used, only old reliable tech because they didn't want any unknowns. As a result it might not be as fast as it could be but problems have been minimal over it's 30 plus years.
This was like 6 weeks after the opening of the stadium, they actually got the time from open to closed down quite a bit over the next couple of years. I recall it being something like 20 minutes or possibly a little less only a couple of years later.
I remember being there on one of the 1st games the roof closed. It was quite a sight and so ahead of it's time.

It takes the roof at the Skydome (now Rogers Centre) 20 minutes to open or close.

That’s the disadvantage of having a roof that closes slowly, it doesn’t close in allotted time during adverse weather conditions.
Takes roughly 20-25 minutes. Just hide in the concourse until then.
That’s why they predetermined the forecast before making a decision to open or keep it closed

All this technology and it takes almost a half an hour to close roof. Norfolk Southern can clear a track in that time frame.
