Well Niall all views on the arts are personal but here goes. First, the staccato rhythm you use in the vocals conveys nothing. Secondly the mis-translation of the Scots, for instance in replacing the original shaw with shore, detracts from the pathos of this wee gem of a song. Shaw and Kyle to me imply that the singer is thinking of home, rather than the immediate surroundings. Hi Colin! I originally learned this version in my youth from the late Charles O'Hegarty, Folksinger, and former Royal Marine, specifically from the album "The Starboard List" , which was produced by my father. Where he got it, I'm not sure, and sadly since he has passed, I likely will never know.
I'm afraid I don't like the translated lyrics. They just don't sound right to me, and at a few places it throws out the number of syllables in a line. A more flowing delivery would suit the song and small pipes better, in my mind. A nice style, but just not for this song.
Bloody awful version. Badly paced and sung without a shred of understanding for the words. And the "translation" of the words is appalling. Completely loses the point and sense of the song. Sing the words AS WRITTEN!
