Nigel Calder books - a cruisers best friend
Amen. First book I bought after buying our boat, and it's already helped me out immensely.
Brian, as one who fights electrical problems everyday, I would like to recommend that you check out the Fluke 365. It can do clamp on current for both AC and DC and the clamp can be seperated by a 1 meter cable for remote sensing. So you can do a great deal of troubleshooting like alternator output, solar panel output, comparing battery bank output, etc. I use this thing everyday!
I know that you are on land, but this is of interest to your followers.

Fluke makes great test equipment. It is hard to justify the cost for someone who does not have a daily use for that type of meter.

I don't if anyone ever brings this up, but the music you run at the beginning of each episode is perfect. Every time I hear it, I get transported... so lol,,, when you feel like some invisible guy is standing somewhere in the background watching... well, that would be me.
I've been a nuclear weapon technician on intercontinental ballistic missiles and I've been a bartender. I've been a mechanical draftsman and detailer in AutoCAD and I've also been a waiter. I've been a floor installer and I've also been a project manager. I've never seen anything as diverse as being a captain on a modern day sailboat. It's very intriguing. I can see how the challenges are addictive.
A tool I’d add to a vessel such is Delos would be a power probe. It was a invaluable tool when i worked as a marine mechanic.

Where do you come down on the crimped vs soldered connections on a boat controversy?
Soldered: makes what seems to be a more solid reliable connection. Has more conductive surface area in contact, has some sealing from corrosion properties.
Crimped: doesn’t make a hard spot in stranded wire that could fail like solid wire fails. The whole reason to have stranded wire on a boat is to minimize damage from vibration/movement.
Enjoying the technical series of mini videos! How-to and troubleshooting content is always welcome to learn & absorb! It would be interesting to see a full breakdown of ALL the toolsets Delos has on board from the soldering iron to multimeters to corded/cordless power tools, hand tools, etc. Maybe a future series could include a review of the Delos crew on-boarding process as I have seen snapshots of at least one or two binders of guides.
Great tool kit, two things that I can think of, solder gun (140/100w) and dielectric grease. The grease should be used on switch contacts, light sockets and inside wire spices. The grease will lock-out air and water,thus no corrosion. The solder gun is not for small soldering jobs, large connections will make sure you will not have a cold solder joint. Remember soldering more heat less solder.

That Nigel Calder's book is on the bookshelves of most sailors. It is such a great one and universally accepted as "essential sailing gear"

I can organize my toolboxes and the first time I use them they are back to jumbled. But I can always find what I need as you just did!

For 12V/24V troubleshooting a test light is better than a meter. Better yet, a standard test light (250ma @ 12V) and a high current (4 - 5A) test light (NOT LED). You will know that you have voltage AND there is current at your test point. Both can be used in series with the "device under test" DUT to limit current to the device.
Your DC "extension cord" is extremely valuable for testing for +DC when you are unsure of the "local" ground as well as testing the "local" ground. This is another good time to use a test light.

Brian and crew, love the videos, I also have most of these tools but I work on radios so I have a few more things, full Tek2445 O-Scope and inline power meter. I bet you have Dielectric grease too, I found this to be something to have.

I do like these tech videos and how self sufficient you are.
Brian, in these days of high end electronics I assume you have testing and repair equipment for making ethernet connections and testiing POE devices. The crimpers you showed looked like coax crimpers. I would include a crimper for RJ45 connectors and a tester for your ethernet connections such as a fluke microscanner or byte brothers tester. To chase wires you need to have a good toner which will identify wires in a bundle. Make mention to always buy marine grade connectors. Using standard automotive connectors will rust and you will be having the same problem in short order. Someone else mentioned dielectric grease.

Same stuff in my boat --- except for one thing. Solder Does Not belong on the wiring in a sailboat. If you can't fix it by crimping it, you need to either replace the wire or hire someone who can fix it by crimping it.

Clamp-meters/amp-clamps are the best! They come in different set-up's. Be sure to check out what it can and can't before buying. Not a bad idea to have more then one of them - just as you let some other boat use yours, you can be pretty sure you need one at your own, at once… 😉
So what's the most important thing in the Box? The knowledge! Brian has the knowledge! Give him a pair of wire strippers and black tape and he can fix anything!

These are great, I would like to see some details beyond the drawing overview. Those details of connectors, fuses, breakers etc are important details that we need to also know about.... worth the risk of overload (Pun) when the systems need attention!

Great video. Yes to be a comfortable cruiser you need to carry a good bunch of tools and machines to make things easier. But Brian hit the nail on the head. You need to work on your boat yourself to understand it otherwise you are basically a credit card captain 😉

Over the years I’ve seen you repair many different motors. Most of the time it was brush or commutator issues. Do you keep a kit of common brushes for your various motors?
