    The best question a doctor ever asked me was, "do you have sex with men, women, or a little of both?" I hadn't come out yet, but that question let me know it was safe to do so. And then we didn't waste time with discussions about pregnancy tests and condom use with men. My care was tailored to ME. You would not believe how many doctors discriminate against LGBTQ people, and if you live in an area where you don't have a lot of choice in who your doctor is, it can be scary and dangerous to come out to a doctor.

      It's sad that it's rare. My sister is married to a woman and it happened several times that doctors asked her if she was sexually active (she said yes,) ask her what birth control method she was using (none) and if she actually want to conceive right now (no at the time - her wife is currently pregnant though) and then was lectured for it!

    Telling your doc you're asexual is usually a fun trip through a physical investigation of what's wrong with you to blood tests to find out why you don't want to bone people to a Very Serious conversation about how you need to see a therapist because sex is vital to a healthy life. Just... love it so much.

    • @GayleenFroese
      @GayleenFroese Рік тому +36

      @@warriorcatkitty You're in a good place in a sense, because you know you're ace and that there's nothing wrong with you (I didn't have this knowledge back in the day, because no one knew what an asexual was.) It sucks to get pathologized--it's embarassing and uncomfortable and it takes up time you could be using to address your actual medical concerns--but you'll ultimately be okay. Just tell your doc and see how they react. The worst case is that you'll find out your doctor isn't the right fit for you. Best case is they'll be great about it. Probably they'll be somewhere between. ♥ Hang in there.

    • @judith8161

      Refuse the tests. Don't let ANYONE discriminate you. Granted, the first time I heard about asexuality, I was confused too. It was as if someone had told me they don't like food. No sweets, okay. Dislike spicy foods, sure. But... generally don't enjoy eating? However, sex is NOT vital, so your doctor has no right to "investigate" unless you explicitly ask them to do so. I have long since come to realize that asexuality is just as natural, though maybe not as common a variation as homo- and bisexuality. Just tell your doc to pretty please educate themselves first and then start taking care of what parts of your health may be of real concern.

When I asked why, they said it was company policy for bisexual people (or basically anyone who wasn’t straight). Of course, this wasn’t disclosed before my exam with a doctor who was way too rapey to be working with people with vaginas. @@ev_rlasting There is a thing called Body integrity disorder in which a person can have a strange fixation on wanting a missing limb. Should we then just cut of their arm and leg to alleviate their discomfort?
      There is a difference between reducing someone breast / cutting them off due to a physical medical problem, - such as tumours, or spinal cord issues - vs cutting them off due to a mental condition that was likely not extensively explored OR could very well debilitate over time.
      I read a story of someone who knew a 16 year old girl who was convinced she was trans. She was approved for a mastectomy after 1-2 visits to the doctor. Weeks after her breasts were removed, she came back to said clinic begging for her breasts back as she realized she wasn't trans. And you REALLY think approving a surgery to take
      away breast tissue for a mental condition not properly explored is ethical?

      @ev_rlasting Рік тому +14

      @@sandyg4646 I didn't say that at all, I would appreciate if you didn't put words in my mouth.
      Cosmetic breast reductions exist and are accepted in society. Gender criticals only take issue when it involves trans people having autonomy over their own bodies.
      For the record your argument's logic implies you don't believe any cosmetic surgery or permanent cosmetic treatment should exist, along with tattoos and other body mods.
      You could argue all are caused by body dysmorphia, other self image issues or self harm. But nobody argued that. Because our autonomy is only questioned when we are trans.
      Additionally, if you don't have a doctorate yourself (or even if you do- you've never MET this person) I'm confused as to why you immediately assume to "know better" about a patient than their own doctor

      @@ev_rlasting "I didn't say that at all, I would appreciate if you didn't put words in my mouth."
      I didn't say you did. I said it to illustrate a point.
      As to the rest of your comment:
      First of all if you're referring to the cutting off of breasts as "cosmetic" , you're only further invalidating it as a medical need. Nice going.
      Second, in no way did my comment argue against tattoos or any cosmetic alteration. What I argued against is the practice of mutilating someone's body after they've had only ONE visit to the doctor and no extensive history of therapeutic counseling to support that getting a breast reduction or mastectomy is the best course of action for that individual. Same as you wouldn't cut off a person's arm just cause they asked for it, you don't cut off a person's breasts just cus they asked for it.
      " I'm confused as to why you immediately assume to "know better" about a patient than their own doctor"
      It doesn't take a being a doctor to know what is ethical and what isn't. The practice of cutting off breasts or doing bottom surgery on someone who had only ONE or TWO visits to the doctor about their GD, is WHOLY unethical.

    As a gay man (in a rural area), I've found it can be a challenge to navigate healthcare providers. Years ago I had a doctor ask if I was married. I told him no (marriage equality wasn't law yet), and he told me I should consider it because married men live longer, healthier lives. I think I blinked hard a couple of times before responding, "well, as soon as it's legal for me to marry my boyfriend of ten years, I'll fill that prescription." Then he blinked hard a few times and asked me when I had my last HIV test. He started by making an assumption about my sexual orientation and then he made an assumption about my sex life. Expiration dates are for guaranteeing nutrient content and that they probably won’t spoil before that date.
    But if after that date, it’s still good, then you can surely have it and it won’t represent any greater risk for your health than it did before the exp. date. :)

She said "Yeah, I had an inkling" and asked me what name and pronouns I preferred to go by, as well as told me it would only take a minute after the checkup if I wanted to change my name and recognized gender (separate from where they need to indicate sex, like an additional thing). @Rexxy Actually that’s completely wrong, as a medical student myself, doctors are not interested in normalcy, we’re interested in maintaining optimal health for our patients.
      The question of your personal needs is irrelevant because in medicine it’s not like retail work, that patient is not always right, in fact most times they’re wrong hence the reason why we’re the doctors and your not. Also psychology is literally a discipline that investigates the human psyche and simultaneously plays a role in treating disorders of the mind. The amount of irrationality in this comment on staggering.
      Also to yourself and the original comment, I feel you should do some actual reading into polyamory, because if you did you would realise that from an evolutionary biological standpoint, polyamory is an inherently unstable form of relationships, so much to the point that in every biological system they exist in, all of those systems have incredibly high levels of ultra violence which all stems from these types relationships, and there’s plenty of biological literature on this topic for you to see for yourself.
      There’s a reason why natural selection favoured monogamous relationship types because the are completely compatible and suitable in evolutionary terms. It’s the primary reason why polyamory feels unnatural and wrong, because it’s not beneficial to society. It’s just a silly trend today from people simply afraid of committment

      This. Why it’s it so hard to just accept the info you’re given?? I was dating a trans man and had a string of bad uti’s and abdominal pain and issues. It took far too much explaining that: yes, I was dating a man. Yes, I was sexually active. No, there’s no way at all I could be pregnant.

      @Margaret Bush Partner was a Trans Man and I am a cis Woman. There were no testes or sperm/semen in our relationship. So, no. No one could have been pregnant.

      @@caitlynglambrecht I had a doctor who... I dunno if she didn't write it down and forgot each time I saw or, or straight up didn't believe me, but she kept insisting I needed to be on contraception. Like... no? Pinkie promise not to get pregnant!

      Well the question: "Have you ever been with the opposite sex?" is probably just to make sure. I mean abrosexuals are a thing that exists. How'd the doctor know? And they ask that for medical reasons, obviously.

      @@caitlynglambrecht Uh but that he was trans is an information the doctor really should be given. Even after (presumably) transitioning, there may still be risks from his leftover female anatomy. Sure those questions are uncomfortable, but the doc has to ask them.

    thank you for speaking about lgbtq+ issues! also i gotta say, in my small, often very homophobic and transphobic eastern european country, it was always the docs and nurses who were always accepting, very kind and totally chill about me being trans (when i had to mention i was trans for health reasons)

      As a Hungarian (I don’t live there anymore) I can only imagine the pain my fellow LGBT people feel, but in the UK it’s a bit better, but recently there’s been a comeback of conversion therapy for transgender people only which sets us back so many years and I just don’t understand why the UK is doing this, so idiotic

      @@pannajohns5255 Perhaps they want to treat Gender Dysphoria... then maybe "trans" and "non-binary" people etc will feel a lot better about themselves. Not tryna be transphobic or anything but a lot of them do suffer from this and I feel like it goes so unrecognised.

    • @pannajohns5255
      @pannajohns5255 2 роки тому

      @@circusmice No they don’t, the UK bringing back conversion therapy has no good intentions other than erasing transgender people and dehumanising them. Boris Johnson since March has been very outspoken about his outrage towards transgender people in the Olympics, JK Rowling, a very famous UK author, is transphobic and has a lot of influence in the public, and the news (especially tabloids) have also been spreading transphobic and transgender related news in which trans people are purposely put in a bad light, further negatively stereotyping transgender people and spreading misinformation about them. If they actually had any intentions of helping transgender people in making them feel more comfortable in their body they would set up and provide them a reliable and safe system that protects their rights and make them feel welcomed, they wouldn’t bring back conversion therapy, which in history as many people know has destroyed and broke many innocent lives. Also idk why you put trans and non binary people in quotations, ngl you give off transphobic vibes.

    I’m 23 and have many health conditions so I have seen MANY doctors throughout the past 10+ years. The first time I was asked about my sexual preference was a year ago by my OBGYN. She still remains the only doctor I’ve ever had to ask.

    • @rumblefish9
      @rumblefish9 2 роки тому +1

      Thats because obgyns need to know if you're sexually active. For women who are, tests like pap smears are a yearly must because they can spot precancers and cervical cancers early. They also treat stds so it their job to know your sexual history.
