Las Vegas is not the best place to start a lion dance troupe. In Hawaii and San Francisco Lion Dancing is hugely popular and many people want to practice and perform. Here in Las Vegas, we often struggle to get new members on our team.
Recently, we combined forces with another team here in Vegas who also have the same problem as we do. This team is called Guan Strong Lion Dance Team and they play a different style of lion dance called Fut San. The head of the group was once a member of the Lung Kong Chinese Physical Culture group in Honolulu.
It’s going to be hard for us to switch over to this new style but we are looking forward to the challenges ahead.
Here you can see the differences in the Lion Dance drumming styles. The drum practices session was one of our first with the new members.
