  • A viewer asked how to begin bike commuting? You'll need a few things.
Bike - What kind of bike?
Good condition, working brakes and shifters. Touring bikes and hybrid bikes are best for commuting.

Equipment - What do you need?
Bright lights. Tires with a smooth tread. Fenders, a bike rack, and disc brakes are nice. Phone, identification, eyewear, a few allen keys, chain tool, spare tube, tire lever and pump - all good to have.
    bikeblogger.com/?p=5457
Clothes - What will you wear?
Something that drys quickly and wicks sweat. Layers in winter. Spare clothes on hot days and rainy days. Roll up dress clothes to prevent wrinkles.

Lock / Parking - Where will you park?
At least one good U-lock. Two is better. Lock each wheel. Find something secured to the ground that cannot be cut easily, preferably out of the way of pedestrians. Take your accessories with you.

Route - How to get to your destination?
Use Google maps and Streetview to find good routes. The 'fastest' route isn't always the best if it has lots of hills and cars. You will discover the best routes with experience.
    bikeblogger.com/?p=5290
Time - How much time do you need?
Do a test ride on the weekend. Give yourself extra time to prepare and to change clothes once you arrive at your destination. Pack the night before.
    bikeblogger.com/?p=4584
Skill - What should you be able to do?
Learn to turn your head to look for traffic before changing lanes. Learn to signal with one arm out and one hand controlling the bike to keep a straight line. Learn to stop quickly.
    bikeblogger.com/?p=5464
    bikeblogger.com/?p=5266
Knowledge / Confidence - What do you need to know?
Learn how to change a tire. Pump up your tires before you go. Drive your bike like a car. Do not ride in the gutter (edge of the road with glass and gravel). Keep a straight line. Look and signal before changing position on the road. This should minimize conflicts and improve your confidence. Ride with groups when possible.

Fitness / Diet / Comfort - How to do better?
Ride more hills to get better at hill climbing. Find a saddle your butt likes - they do exist! Find foods that agree with your stomach - don't mix starches with proteins, eat acidic fruits alone. Drink water before and during you ride. It gets better.

I've been commuting with my pedal assist e-bike now for a year. The must haves are fenders, lights, good helmet, clothes that breath and enough time. I wake up super early but it is totally worth it, changed my life completely.

62 years old. Living in a small city of 23,000 people in central Florida. Recently started riding an Electra Townie 7D eBike with pedal assist to work 2 miles from home. Now I am hooked. I ride at lunch time on paved bicycle and pedestrian paths. I ride to work, shopping, personal business and personal appointments. Wish I would have started this 40 years ago. Still have my truck. I use it during foul weather and/or emergencies.

Tell people to get a mirror. It is an essential piece of safety equipment. It will give them a lot more confidence to ride in traffic.

my favorite thing about this video is that it shows how fast you can go on a good bike... we can hear you're not huffing and puffing, you're still able to talk... lots of bike commuters are going super slow, maybe they can get inspired by this

I rescued an old mountain bike from going to the recycle station. It was built in 2000 with an aluminum frame and disk brakes. I replaced the crank, free wheel and chain with a new set. I upgraded the disk brakes to some BB7's. I replaced the shock forks with a carbon rigid fork. I added plastic fenders and a rack attached to the seat post. And finally, I switched out the saddle with a Brooks B-17 and replaced the knobby tires with slicks. Now I have a very sturdy commuter that is capable of 4 season commuting. In the winter, I replace the slicks with studded tires.

If you are wearing a backpack, add reflective material to your backpack. When riding in winter and its dark, wear bright coloured gloves so traffic is able to pick up your hand signals. Buy warm gloves and socks for winter, its worth it, also a bacalava to protect your lung from cold air. Invest in good bright lights, perhaps use redundant backlights, you won´t notice if the battery of your backlight fails. Put your head on a swivel, be aware of the traffic around you, not everybody follows the rules. When changing clothes, you can get rid of sweat with babywipes. Stay hydrated. Winter pro tip: overdress your body core, therefore your body tries to get rid of the heat via your extremeties which means your extremeties keep warm. Know your roads, know your potholes.

Thanks for this post. I agree that it helps to start out gradually. Much better to ease into bike commuting, especially if you don't already bike regularly. So if bike commuting 5 days a week sounds daunting, you can try doing it once a week at first. And then once you have your system in place (preparing for the ride, actual ride, freshening up at the office), you can move on to two days a week, and build on that.

Easy way to start? Find a local Bike Store that does Bike Rentals. Keep renting bikes for about a fortnight, you'll find out pretty quick if you want to get your own bike.

I would love to have a 4 mile commute. Mine is 12. I usually add a couple more miles to do grocery runs and other errands during the week.

I commute on a louis garneau urbania sp4 hybrid with 35mm tires, upgraded shimano discs, fenders and so many high quality and bright lights that I look like an ambulance!...I love my 7 mile run each way to and from work, it's the best part of the day...

Lights. Also, visible clothing, especially a light windbreaker that is rain resistant.

If ur commuting then I’d recommend an umbrella from davek(115$), and for winter I recommend a sub zero jacket for when it gets under subzero or 10 degrees.

This is like ASMR. Your voice is calming and the esthetic is relaxing
