A Class 310's lovers wet dream - really miss these units, shame that not a single one of them was saved. Thank you for the memories of the sounds I used to enjoy as a kid bashing these round the West Midlands, the unmistakable sounds of the compressor, the brake release and the camshaft tap changers live on!

Love that woman's comment at the end. "I bought a bloody ticket - and someone's not even got the decency to take it offa me!". Great vid of the 302s (and 310s). Miss that whining old motor noise.

I miss seeing these trains. It takes me back to my primary school days.

I used to be late everyday for work when I was a kid and I'd end up running over the bridge at Tilbury when the train was already on the platform, I'd run out onto the platform as the train was moving - gathering speed, get the door open and jump on it or in some case dive in - all over the floor with my feet hanging out as the train was clearing the platform sometimes. Mental - can you imagine that these days!

Oh this brings back memories. I worked at East Ham depot as a mechanical and electrical engineer and serviced the 302s, 305s. 308s and the 310s and 312 EMUs. I remember that day clearly and was sad to see them go. Easy to work on and to maintain. Now no character in the new units. Like steam engines, each unit was unique and had its own character. 302 201 was the last unit I worked on before they went to scrap. Still have photos of her.

Jesus that takes me back. I remember living in Grays by the station and seeing these trains pass through all the time. My old man taking me on to Barking to change for the Underground or going to Southend for the day. Thanks for the upload!

302's were good to drive.... preferred the 310's and 312's personally, but, still good units. As were the 305's. Block brakes - give it full ep brake hitting the platforms at 40, then release the brakes just before coming to a stand so as to not end up in a heap when stopping :) nice video - takes me back.

That's exactly how I drive the 4CEP in train simulator - depending on platform length of course! In fact, it is possible approach Orpington at just under 45mph and still stop comfortably. I find that a full release at roughly 10 mph produces a nice smooth stop. When driving a disc braked train such as a 365, platform approach speeds can be similar, although only step 2 is required. I can't stand the usual braking method these days - slam on far too early, crawl into platform at about 20 and then slam the brakes back on right at the end.

I remember the 302's from the 1960's and 70's with the 4 digit headcode displays, ladies only compartments and the 1st class corridor compartments.

20 years ago this month. The class 312s looked so good that even they were involved in this video although this video is about class 302s.

and if you scrape away all the modern fancy paintwork from the 302s, you will find Dark Green and the head-code display on the ends for the times back when there were no travelling head-code displays in the signal boxes.

I have been travelled Class 302 from Basildon to Upminster before change Class 315 for Romford. I thought it serviced Liverpool St to Southend Vic until I found out it was Class 307 worked Liverpool St-Southend Vic. Both 302 and 307 are same identity but 307 driving tailor has pantograph. Most I travelled on Class 310s to Fenchurch Street than 302s. I heard two driving tailors of 302 are safe but without electric. They can travel via dragged by diesel train.

At 20 seconds, the caption should read passing by East Ham Depot, not passing by West Ham Depot.

Actually, I like the electrostar Class 357s but yes, the Class 302s had a much better taste.
