We set out to find common Kentucky snake species. We discuss both the venomous and non-venomous variety. Does a snake bite hurt? How many teeth do they have? Keep watching and see or yourself...
I’ve got a big old rat snake that is there every year in my shed. She’s very docile and gorgeous! I measured her shed skin today and she’s getting close to 7’. I can tell it’s the same snake every year because she has a scar on her. She’s my buddy! I’ve seen half a dozen coppers along my tree line. They’re beautiful, but I leave them alone.
Im with you , I love snakes. They do a lot of good. They are beautiful. It really depresses me to hear about all the people that kill them. If they would just learn, they wouldn't have to fear them.
In 1986 in Lexington (close to where the old Lexington mall used to be) i caught a garter snake that was almost 4 feet long. I know, they're usually pretty small, but not this one!
I have a garter snake living in a bush in front of the house..He's there every morning around 9am sitting in the sun, or was..I guess it is too cold right now.
Don't you come out of places like that, this time of year, covered in ticks? Here in southern illinois, if I did that, i'd have dozens on me by the end. Ticks are the only things that bother me outdoors. I'm afraid of Lyme disease. I know the odds are low, but i'm telling you, with my luck, i'd be the next.
Lol, i feel the same way , i go into the woods fearing something barely visible , especially those deer ticks, dam there bad here in se ky . Where they were at looked to be prime territory for ticks . I dont know what you do but i put on women s pantyhose as a first layer , tuck my pants in my boots and duct tape around the top of my boots . Hey i know its sounds weird but it does work . Lyme disease is no joke . If you got a diy tick prevention method , im all ears .
Ticks are the only thing I legitimately worry about out in the woods. I’m in the bluegrass, there’s almost no amphibian or reptile diversity here, same with plants I guess. The bluegrass has been sterilized. No lizards, only about 4 snakes, lots of turtles in the water but almost no box turtles, a handful of frogs and salamanders. Most people like it that way…living in a sterilized world🤮
When I was younger me and my family went to Kentucky and we took home a box turtle without knowing it's illegal and then we found out but we took good care of it and then my uncle took it back I miss him lmaoo
Today we caught a hognose snake, 2 garter snakes, a queen snake, a baby ringneck and a milk snake. When I went to kentucky I was promised a copperhead but I didn't get to see one.
I was wondering if anyone could help me but I live in woodford and I was taking my dog out to use the bathroom at night when I notice a snake at my feet which is common but it was white with yellow stripes going down I've never seen it before
was out by my koi pond today and saw a black snake come out of the rocks around the falls. It was black with yellow stripes down each side of the snake. What kind of snake is this?
they do smell like cucumbers to me, unfortunately you don't smell it until you step on them or near them. I have been way too close to a few copperheads in ky.
No cottonmouths? If we had had iPhones back in my frog-gigging days, I could have shown you some monsters! Aggressive mothers trying to get in the boat. Raise the hair on your neck, and send you home fast!
I can't stand snakes but i lived in Georgia and came across athat black snake that eats rattlesnakes i can't remember it's name it's protected because it is so doscile to humans. It flicked it's tongue and ee went our ways. Later i shot a cainebrake rattler in a briar patch. I also lived in Tecas a saw a coral snake beautiful and non agressive just don't pick them up it got scared of me and reversed itself to a small whole. Of you wana see Kentucky snakes go to Lawerance co. My grandparents lived there o almost got bit by a Cottonmouth.
I know your comment was from 4 years ago, but since no one responded, you are describing the kingsnake. Calm, not aggressive, nonvenomous, and they eat other snakes, including rattlers. Lots of videos available on kingsnakes.

KY Afield is doing a tremendous job of educating people about wildlife.

Consider installing Screech Owl nest boxes. Owls eat rodents which host ticks and feed and attract pit vipers.

If it don't rattle it's a copperhead. That's why I choose to leave snakes alone.

what kind of venomous snakes live in an around the louisville area
Only copperheads , moccasins in western ky, timberrattlers in western, eastern ,southern ky
The ringnecks don’t bite because they’re rear-fanged, just clarifying.
Todd Eubanks that just have teeth fangs are bigger teeth that injection venom there just to small and know biting you would be harmless
Do copperheads smell like cucumbers? i have heard this is it a myth?
I live in Kansas and I have heard it described like that also. I've been around a lot of copperheads and I wouldn't describe it as cucumber.
Jamie Lindner
I think they smell something like a pile of firewood , kinda like musty old wood not cucumbers idk why they would ever say that

If your cucumber 🥒 smells like a copperhead throw it away.
Those snakes 🐍 can be dangerous as hell!
Yeah they help get rid of to many people.
Is it true gardener snakes have fangs way back in their throats that inject poison in their prey?
Garter snakes are harmless...
Patrick London pfttt no
Not venom, its an acid, like stomach acid that helps break down the protein for better digestion.
