So 10 years ago I was staying at my friends beach house and was hosting a dinner party for family and friends. Since it was not my kitchen. I grabbed a decanter of olive oil to put on roast chicken. The liquid was yellow. It was like a scene in a bad movie. Everyone took first bite and spit out chicken at same time. It seems I marinated the meat with joy dish detergent. Ugh. Pizza it was that night 😂

When I was newly married (42 yrs ago), we went to the house of my husband's mother. We had a new apartment and my mother-in-law and sisters-in-law all wanted to see our new place, so off we all went, a few minutes drive away. When we walked in the smell hit everyone square in the face...I had put a pot of pinto beans on the stove to cook for our dinner that night...and had forgotten about them so they were on the stove, burned to a crisp and the odor was horrible. I was so SO embarrassed, for the obvious reasons, but also because my MIL really did make the best pinto beans. Honestly, I don't know how the smoke alarms didn't go off for the whole complex, or how they didn't start a fire. Never went off leaving something cooking on the stove again! My in-laws were great and I don't think they mentioned it but one or two times over the years, lol. I'm still a little embarrassed, but I make great pinto beans now, on par with my late MIL.

When I was first learning to cook in middle school, I really wanted to make zucchini bread. My parents worked so there was no one home to help me but I figured I could follow a recipe. However, I overestimated my ability to distinguish a cucumber from a zucchini…cucumbers don’t make good bread, in case you’re wondering.

When I was newly married, I was trying to make a flambé chicken recipe. I poured the bourbon in and my lighter wouldn’t work. Of course, the lighter finally worked and caused a huge fireball. The fire caught a section of my hair. Husband started smacking me in the head to kill the fire. The food turned out fine, but I still have a small bald spot 30 years later.

This story is one I was involved with. I had an employee from Turkey and she was telling me her mom was here visiting and made the best Turkish coffee and after you drank it her mother would ‘read the grounds’ for you. She invited me over but when I took a sip and they asked me how I liked it I had to be honest and let her know I wasn’t expecting it to taste the way it did. So she took a sip of hers and she jumped up and grabbed my cup and they rushed back to the kitchen and made up a new pot. Turned out that somehow her mother had used salt instead of sugar haha… we laughed about it as long as we worked together. I did get a great reading of the grounds, it was fun. ❤

So one day about 20 years ago I was boiling water for corn. I decided that would be a good time to wipe down the stove top at this time. I moved the pot to the burner on the other side and proceeded to grab the grate that the pot had been on with my bare hands (I was completely sober🙄) to wipe down that side. The grate literally stuck to my hand before falling off!!! I had the shape of the grate burned to my hand (think Home Alone bad guy Harrywith an "M" burned to his hand). Fortunately I didn't need medical attention but I kept an ice pack on it for a good 12 hours.

My most embarassing cooking moment was also the one that had me laugh/crying hysterically for 5 minutes straight. I had boiled up a HUGE pot of chicken bones and skin for a massive chicken soup. I figured I'd be smart and strain the whole thing in my sink with a strainer instead of picking out all the bones and skin by hand. Wouldn't you know, I forgot to place a pot under the strainer and proceeded to pour the whole pot into the strainer and down the drain!

    • @Lucinda_Jackson

Oh no! My first married cooking disaster also involved a desire for chicken soup. I decided to stew a chicken and then use half the meat in a recipe and the other half in a meaty chicken soup/stew. I hadn't done it before and it never crossed my mind to cover the pot. So it came to a boil and I reduced the heat to a slow boil, set the timer and left the room. When the timer sounded and I went back in, half my kitchen was covered with chicken grease! It was all in the drapes near the stove, all over the mini blinds on the kitchen window, *dripping from the ceiling*!!! All that steam carried the grease up into the air with it where it cooled and condensed on the ceiling and walls and everything else! What a mess!

Ended up in the ER when I was making pan-fried chicken nuggets. One of the smaller ones was wet. As soon as I dropped it into the hot oil, it exploded and shot out above my head and landed on the floor. In the process, it brought oil with it, which spread all over my forearm (the one holding the tongs used to place the chicken into the pan). 3 second degree burns later, my arm was wrapped in a bandage with burn ointment and gauze underneath... had to keep that sucker on for 2 weeks (changing 3 times a day of course)! When they say oil and water don't mix, they weren't kidding! I now make sure my chicken is 100% dry before cooking in oil.

When dating my husband back in 1980, I cooked a large pot of pasta for him & friends. The handle on the pot was loose & as I went to turn it away from me to drain, it came back fwd & the boiling water landed on my thigh. The 2nd degree burn only started to hurt as we were driving to the hospital, apparently due to the sympathetic nervous system/shock. At the ER, the triage nurse took me from the back of the line to treatment. They poured very cold water thru gauze & also prescribed Silvadene cream plus changing of bandages at home so after some weeks my leg healed perfectly.

I worked for the college food line, catering. I’m short and the boss didn’t think about where he put me this one might. It was at the pizza station. The oven was countertop and 3 ovens sections. The lowest was chest high. He came over and I was taken the pizza out. Guess not fast enough for him do he grabbed a hot pad and pulled it out faster than I was. Put it mildly I was in immediate pain. It went through the apron my shirt and undergarment. He told me to go to the bathroom and check out what happened. It was second degree burns across my chest. The female boss told me to show her. Not happening. Ended going to my doctor the next morning and getting pain meds and a burn cream.

Great timing! I have chicken thawing to make Greek Chicken Sheet Pan meal, tomorrow night. i've had a couple of disasters. When I was about 13, I was in 4-H. My cooking class had us bringing a pie that we had made. I made a cherry pie. I took it to class, and we all tasted each others' pies. I had forgot to put the sugar in!!! It was quite tart. Later, the men came in from the fields, and we offered them a piece of my pie. We all had a good laugh. People in my home town still remember my Cherry Pie.

We had guests for dinner. I was making my famous "spaghetti bread". Named by my 4 year old because I made it every time I made spaghetti. It's french bread that is buttered and sprinkled with cheese and spices. You broil for a minute or two it until browns. I left it in the oven too long and my guests watched me fling two flaming half loaves of french bread from the oven to the sink.

Christmas day is also is our daughters birthday. My mom recently passed and I was trying to recreate her Chocolate flan bundt cake. (Yummy and Lots of ingredients and heavy).
We we’re getting new cabinet work done and oven was off balanced some and when I opened the door to put the cake on the oven door it SLID. Needless to say all over the floor, down the inside of the oven glass (brand new). I was a crying mess.
My husband was awesome he googled how to remove the glass to clean, helped me clean up the mess, offered to run to the store to try again.
I looked in the cabinets and luckily I found everything I needed to redo again. This time it turned out perfect. Yay!

Luckily I have not had any cooking disasters in my life - however my family has. So when I was little we would switch holidays with father's sister - Thanksgiving at our house, Christmas at theirs, etc etc - until The thanksgiving at my Aunt's house. Beautifully cooked bird, sitting on the platter on the table, my father always carved. Imagine the response when he cut in and discovered she had left the paper bag of giblets inside. (Too many pre-dinner drinks while cooking we suspect) - however after that all holiday meals were served at our house.

I made the Italian Pork chop - sort of. We did not have pork chops so I substituted chicken breasts and green beans. Oh and my Parmesan cheese had expired. That being said, it was delicious and super easy. The marinade, I rubbed it on the chicken breasts. And tossed the green beans and the potatoes is the remaining seasoning. Cooked the vegetables first for 10 minutes, sprinkled some Kinders The Blend on them, then added the chicken on top and cooked for 35 minutes. Thank you for a great recipe!!

My most painful mistake comes under the heading of Pride Goeth Before a Fall". I was in high school and I loved to bake things and make simple dinners for my family on weekends. I had invited a couple of friends over and I was showing them how to make cookies. When I took them out of the oven, I wanted to present them with a flourish so I balanced the cookie sheet on the oven mitt covering my lower arm, sort of like a waiter carrying a tray with one hand. When I stood up and turned to show them off, the hit sheet slid down the oven mitt to my elbow, burning the inside of my lower arm and upper arm and the tender elbow in between. I had a scar there for years!

It’s thanksgiving and the entire family is coming or dinner at my house! I get up to discover my oven has died! Now what?! My parents to the rescue! My dad brought over my mother’s large nesco oven! Well, I had used them to keep food warm but never to cook! I get the turkey into the nesco and continue on with prep of other things. My mother had warned about opening the oven and letting the heat escape so it resisted the urge! Well, it came time to work on the gravy. I popped the top to scoop out some juices and started to cry! I was devastated! It had smelled so good! I looked down into the pot and it looked like someone had thrown in a hand grenade and slammed the cover shut! There stood the frame of the turkey and as it cooked everything slid off the bones and ended up at the bottom! It didn’t even look like a turkey! In the end, it turned out to be the ugliest looking , best tasting, juiciest turkey ever!
    Does that count?

But I can actually pronounce all the ingredients and the local grocery store has all the ingredients! Anyway, my worst moment in the kitchen was exploding potatoes. I was a newlywed and I did not know that you were suppose to stab holes in the potatoes. I had a long fork used for BBQ and thought that would be great to take the potatoes out of the oven. Wrong. Yes, my mom used the foil pans when I was younger because our kitchen was smaller and she didn't have the space to store a big roasting pan for use a couple of times a year. She drilled it into me to ALWAYS use at least two stacked and put a sheet pan underneath for support. I'm glad she had a small kitchen for awhile or I'd have done the same thing you did in our first apartment when I used a foil pan for a turkey!

One of my many most embarrassing moments was when my dad was visiting from out of town, and I put a chicken on the barbeque spit to cook. I had never done it that way before, but I knew that in the oven a whole chicken would take about an hour or an hour and a half. My father did suggest that I check on the chicken, about a half an hour into it. I told him that I didn’t need to. “It was fine”. When I finally did check on the chicken, it was this tiny chard nothing with a flame on it going around and around. We didn’t have chicken that night. And I still laugh about it these many years later.

My son, when he was 15, was at a Boy Scout campout (he was Eagle already, so he SHOULD have known better) and dumped a whole package of COLD bacon into a pan with HOT grease. He suffered 2nd degree burns on his arms and had to go through a painful debridement.
I completely undercooked some cabbage rolls for a family gathering once, so they were all raw and had to be microwaved to finish cooking them. They were delicious…just not fully cooked. 🤦🏻‍♀️

twice I burned myself. First time, I burned my fingers because my husband pushed an unused pot to back of the stovetop while we were baking something. Not thinking anything of it, I grabbed it to move it, and well, the vent from the over heated that pot up good. Finger tips got nice and blistered. 2nd time was Lobster related. I had the water at a Rolling boil. And Dummy that I was being, didn't put the lobster in HEAD FIRST, So with it's tail it splashed the entire front of my chest/neck.

Couple of embarrasing cooking stories happened when I was hosting dinner parties in high school. First: I didn't eat much meat and never cooked it before. I decided pork loin chops were going to be the easiest.... Hockey pucks are softer.... Second: I misread the recipe for Kahlua Chocolate Mousse... I added the alcohol last... 14 drunk teenagers sprawled out over the floor of my grandmothers....

My very first time cooking like actually cooking, I was I think 8. I was making spaghetti. I went to grab the pasta off the stove top but the handles were hot so I grabbed a kitchen towel. We had a gas stove top. I caught it on fire and part of the kitchen floor when I panicked and threw it down and then screamed until my dad came and stomped it out. The spaghetti also tasted awful because I had no idea about seasoning the sauce or how to check if the pasta was cooked properly.

I will never cook a turkey again. The first one I cooked was for Christmas eve. I cleaned out the cavity and prepared the bird. I thought wow this bird didn’t come with that plastic bag of gizzards. Well when I took it out and it was ready to be carved, I sliced through the breast area and the bag of gizzards just emerged as if it was being born. I was so grossed out. Never again

In college one of my roommates decided to fry chicken. So of corse if you fry chicken you have to have biscuits and gravy. The biscuits were easy we opened a can and cooked per instructions the gravy we all 3 knew what was in it but not how much of each. So we all tried calling our moms pre cell phone and none of them answered. So we discussed. A little grease and a lot of milk or a lot of grease and a little milk. At the end I was determined to be the taste tester. Let me just say I tasted grease for days. Still to this day over 30 years later we still laugh about it.

OK. Here's a laugh for you and your subbies. My mom was not the kind of mom that taught us how to cook. I never learned until recently, and I am now going on 63 years old. No one taught me how to cook. Back when I was 16 I wanted to bake a cake. My mom told me to read the instructions instead of talking me through the process. I didn't know that you had to let the cake COOL BEFORE YOU FROSTED IT!!!! When I took the cake out of the oven, my mom didn't event tell me at that point to let the cake cool. I started frosting it and the icing started melting. Now it's a big joke in my family about that cake. My dad called it my "MOON CAKE". EVERYONE got a big laugh out of it, UNTIL I told them that my mom never taught me how to cook and never told me that I had to let the cake cool first. My dad wouldn't let us in the kitchen when mom was cooking, so I never learned how to cook! I'm surprised I never burnt HOT DOGS!!! Everything I cooked came out of a can or a box. One time I cooked a turkey. My mom didn't tell me you had to take out the bag in the turkey that the gizzards were in. So, I cooked the turkey. Then when we went to cut it, my mom noticed something inside. She pulled out this bag. We got a laugh out of that, too. But now that I KNOW how to cook, I'm loving it. I never burnt my fingers on anything, but I did mess up a lot of food. Now, I'm ALWAYS trying something new. I'm glad your sister's fingers got better!!! Burns on the fingertips can be excruciating when you have to use your fingers. Have a great Sunday!!!!

Most embarrassing and painful kitchen mistake....I cooked a sauce pan of veggies in the stove top. Carried them to the table and instead of drawing or setting them down first, I say down at the table. When I did, the hot water from the pan dumped in my lap. I was unable to wear clothes for a very long time from the burns I sustained! It was not my finest moment! Ugh! Lesson learned!

Boiling water on you skin makes it peel back in layers. Gross. So painful. Went to ER where they scrubbed my arm and wrapped it up. I now refuse to make it.
