  • Adding mulch in your garden beds can help with weed control and water retention. This video show how I mulch mine and what kind of mulch I choose to use. Adding compost at the end is just to give the plants a little boost of nutrition.

I've been using leaf mulch around my tomatoes. It hold in the water and they seem to like it. Hey leaves are a free resource why not use them.

What do you do with the mulch at the end of the growing season? Do you remove it or work it into the soil for the next season? Thanks!

great video thanks for the tutorial. would you recommend the cedar mulch for watermelons and cucumbers plants too?

Marsha G I don't have a problem using cedar mulch around any of my plants. I would never mix it into the soil, but if it's just used on top as a covering it will do fine.

Blake Kirby Why not mix into soil? I read elsewhere adding a layer of compost on top of the mulch at season end helps prep for next growing season.

Germaine Bacon The woody mulch should lay on top of the soil. If it is buried, then it will absorb nitrogen in the soil. The plants then can't utilize that nitrogen as fertilizing food until that wood mulch completely breaks down and decomposes... this could take years. Adding compost on top of mulch is fine because it will soak in when watered.

What do you do with the rubber mulch at the end of the season? Should we remove them before adding compost and manure for the winter resting of soil?

Are you currently using rubber mulch? I would not recommend it for the garden. If you are using it I'd remove it and maybe use it around some trees in the landscaping or something. Use wood or leaf mulch in the garden.

We r in Ontario Canada where weather is very temperamental and fluctuate widely over the spring and summer. Was thinking of using mulch to keep plants warm during night time.
