To slay crappie in the summer months I used to put a bobber about 4-5 feet up my line, tie on a real small hook, and pair it with a spoon and some live worms, or powerbait crappie balls. Real in slowly and the crappie will hit like bass. You can also do the same rig with a small rooster tail or grub and no bait, you'll just get less bites

I personally would use 4 lbs line and 1/16 jig. I like to finesse it more
