As far as anime blowing up in popularity when you were in highschool, I was born the same year as you but grew up in Canada and starting around when I was 8 or so the local cartoon channel started airing a lot of anime around 8 pm on Friday nights. Shows like Naruto, Bleach, FMA, .hack//Sign, Inuyasha, Zatch Bell, One Piece, Eureka Seven, etc. With Dragonball Z and Pokemon so ingrained into the consciousness of that generation (+ digimon, yugioh, etc.) I think everyone I knew growing up watched anime, even if it was just mainstream shows. The idea of anime as weird or unusual would be unthinkable and it blows my mind that you were in highschool with kids that had never watched any anime in their entire lives.
On the photo issue they get very very specific about having properly licensed stuff - if you can CC license something or perhaps upload a photo to commons and assert it's your own work it can be used.
@@Setton-kl2sj how lol, study Cyrillic? To be fair most of us would think that is Russian too before somebody from Ukraine point out. Just like Malaysian, Indonesian and Filipino, how can you tell apart if you aren't actually studying the language or a person from that country?

In Croatia, there's actually a solid community of anime/manga fans and appreciators of Japanese culture, that is actually quite big, relative to the country's size and population. There's also a con (Pandakon) that is held yearly, I believe. There are also two universities in the country (Zagreb and Pula, I believe) that offer university education in Japanese language and culture (as well as Chinese, in Zagreb). The community is really dedicated, so I don't find it as surprising that there is a page about Joey in Croatian :D Also take into account that there is a large community of Croatians who emigrated to Australia sometime during the previous century, one example being Lorde (her mother is of Croatian descent and our previous president awarded Lorde with a honorary citizenship) :D Congrats, Joey! :D
We have that sort of thing in Serbia too. There is actually a famous language gymnasium in a city called Sremski Karlovci where people can start learning Japanese language and culture in high school! Also I was really surprised to find out that there is quite a large anime/manga community. I honestly thought this type of stuff hasn't caught on here in the Balkans, but I guess it has...
@@Kolket1389 oh, that's actually really cool! In Croatian linguistic gymnasiums ("jezična gimnazija"), depending in the region of the country, you'll probably be offered one of the more "popular" languages, such as German, Italian or French. The only case that stands out from this, as far as I can remember, is one gymnasium from northern Croatia that sent their students to an Esperanto competition somewhere in Europe :D but that sounds very extracurricular-y and probably depends exclusively on the good will of a teacher or two who organised their time for teaching Esperanto. As far as the anime/manga community, I believe there were actually more activities a couple of years ago, compared to now, due to the pandemic, but hopefully it'll pick up again soon :D
Croatia counts as Eastern Europe right? I've been noticing this... I find it suprising that anime is decently more popular in Eastern Europe than Western Europe. Anime/manga culture hasn't picked up properly yet in UK, Germany, etc. But it's quite popular in spain, France and Portugal which are exceptions to this trend.
17:09 that is persian which uses the arabic script but is in a completely different language family than arabic. but is still interesting how there is no arabic article yet there is a persian one since there are more articles written in arabic than they are in persian. (ukrainian has over 1'100'000 wikipedia articles and russian has over 1'700'000) sorry for this long comment, just wanted to spread some info about these languages.
What if both Joey's Parents did a competition where they make him a Wikipedia page? Like, his Dad making him an English version while his mother makes a Japanese one.
The high school thing might have been added by someone who went to the same school 🤔 and anime wasn't growing more popular around the world in 2010 😅 I was bullied for liking anime until like... 2016 or so 🤣

On anime becoming popular just lately, I'd say it certainly has had an international boom with the advent of Crunchyroll and Netflix, but I think it was already becoming popular in the 2000s among young teens. At least around here people grew up with Pokemon, and maybe even other popular shows like Dragonball and Sailor Moon, and in the 2000s high internet speeds and download culture boomed so a lot of shows were getting fansubbed and put out there. Many of my friends knew about it and had probably at least seen some Naruto, even though it was never shown on linear TV here. I agree that it has been somewhat of a niche to be into anime, but still popular enough that most young people knew what "anime" and "manga" meant around 2005. The associated acts bit is just sorted alphabetically here, so don't worry too much about that. ^^,
Oh, counting by the number of recent and rapid-fire edit reversions the past few hours, that’s definitely been attempted. I feel sorry for the senior editors who are taking down copyrighted images as they are uploaded in particular…Joey may not mind having an image of himself up, but that doesn’t change one of the biggest legal rules on Wikipedia…
That's just how wikis are sometimes, segments that have less information out there are easier to decide to write (hence the "long" early life segment) while segments that have a lot of information out there take more effort to decide to write, considering that if you were to write them you'd have to avoid missing things (hence the short career segment). "Beginning to grow in popularity" doesn't mean booming, and it's definitely true that anime started growing in popularity in the early 2010's, only to start really booming around 2018-2019.
So Joey also has Hungarian DNA, that is interesting. As far as I know Sharla's grandfather is also Hungarian. Who's next, Natsuki? ^^ - a Hungarian viewer

Joey's Dad: leaks info about Joey and wrote it on wikipedia.
Deadass, Joey making a video calling his dad out on being his #1 fan is the most hilarious and most wholesome thing ever 😂🥺❤️
I must admit, it's kinda sweet if a family member went out of their way to try make you a wikipedia page XD
Edit: After watching more, if it is his Dad, that is such a "I'm proud of my son" Dad move, I love it XD

Oooh the Persians and Ukranians aren't gonna like being called their arch rivals 🤣
I love how if you check the Wikipedia page now you see quite a bit of recent activity. You also see Joey's father outing himself lmao.
Seems like the lack of picture is due to their strict guidelines on copyright. Just go to the talk page. It's kinda funny to read through.
It has been interesting to say the least.

Hey Joey! If you'd like to know, the Arabic language is not actually Arabic but Persian or Farsi (mainly spoken in old Persian territories such as Iran as the main language, Afghanistan, Tajikistan, etc). Persian is written with the same letters -and even a few more of its own!-but is very different from Arabic!😊

It apsolutly pissses the shit out of me that this video is in 4k, yet Joey looks like he's coming out of a microwave

Hey Joey, don’t know if you’ll read this, but I’d just like to let you know that I am extremely interested in you just talking about yourself on this channel. You made a few videos years back on how it was as a half Japanese half Australian growing up and interviewed a few of your relatives, but I’d like to see more of that.
The article you think is Russian is actually Ukrainian ;)
felt like a damn stalker ._.
I really appreciate Joey for making this video and observing motivations the human experience of the backlash. As far as Drama for current productions go think this a good learning experience for audiences. Oshi no Ko is Meta in all the Best ways.
Famous because of the HIT single top something in itunes Too Much Volcano.
Wait does anyone else feel like Joey’s voice and accent has changed a little recently or maybe since he’s moved to Japan? He sounds less Australian now.
I'm guessing that the 'Associated Acts' was llisted in alphabetical order, hence why Chris got ahead of Aki. He's had this planned for years back when he first came up with the channel name :P
It indeed is - and it has to be to be accepted aswell.

I can say from experience, you can find a lot about a person just knowing their full name and some other piece of personal info and googling it. I regularly google myself to see what information the world has. You can EASILY find family information online, within an hour or less. Yep, its terrifying but sadly that's where we are in the world.
btw just a note the last wiki about Joey is not in Russian, its in Ukrainian (not the best time to get them mixed up)

12:17 I checked just out of curiosity, the first edit that adds this about your grandfather is by an address near New South Wales, who also, about two years ago wrote a message on the wikipedia starting with "I am Joey's father and would like the following edits made..." before writing some fairly specific stuff about the considerations your parents made around school choice etc.
In essence, there's no way this isn't your dad lol
This article is obviously written by two people: his dad and some Finn.

I saw the title of this and immediately looked it up, I think I was taken aback by how much of the Trash Taste hosts have their own Wikipedia page and how much content is on their pages- albeit easy to see that most of this was constructed from fans.
I was also surprised by the fact that Aki has her own Wikipedia.
what is this
Just a heads up, I edit on Wikipedia and I’m solely responsible for much of the Ikurru section, specifically what‘s been released.
So you wrote about his grandfather?
No I wrote the ‘he has released this and that’ portion.
As someone that used to listen to you and Aki's SBS pop Asia podcast, there are a few details I remember from that. So perhaps another listener from back then. Fun video, thanks Joey
I think the reason why the Career section is quite incomplete is because no existing interviews or articles online exist to fill in.
Are links to UA-cam videos not allowed? Because, while time-consuming, that would probably be where the most info can be found.
@@BewareTheLilyOfTheValley Someone made a comment that explains this
@@xylathoth Thank you!
The odd thing with Wikipedia is that everything needs citations, so you can't just edit your own Wikipedia page as it will get flagged for vandalism. So you would need to upload a corresponding video or blog post so that said "facts" have citations.
“Constructed around who is more related to me and that Abroad In Japan is Above Aki, my own girlfriend” Joey said while not realising it’s alphabetical.
Love that the page is updated and some things are changed, BUT THERE'S STILL NO PICTURE
Your wikipedia page is from 2019, and have been edited quite a lot throughout the years, you can see the modifications and who's the user responsible for this on the History tab next to the search bar and with a bit of social engineering you can find out if a member of your family was responsible for the edit.
The Photo one, I think Wikipedia can only use pictures in creative commons copyright system or donated, but I'm not sure (there's probably a wikipedia page about this haha)
Joey's Dad: Wow, my son is a huge UA-camr now. Hey Honey, let's let the whole world know about it. (Editing Wiki)
12:40 If you search wikipedia history for that page, the grandfather part was added on June 12th, 2020, and the ip address for that edit was from Australia, so yeah, looks plausible
I love how at 16:34-16:35 you can just see the word “yaoi” in the center of the screen
plot twist: whomever wrote this wikipedia page was waiting for Joey to react to it and correct the information just so they could alter it later
whoever*
You have discovered the plan!
Oh I'm convinced a Finnish person wrote the part about the conventions lmao we lose our minds any time our country is mentioned anywhere
Associated acts is listed by alphabet, also I think the picture has to be free licensed and maybe they couldn't find one .
I think the associated acts part was sorted alphabetically, hence why Abroad in Japan was first before Aki
Wikipedia can be strict about copyrighted images so maybe any editor just couldn't find any images that they were confident about being fair use / CC / public domain. I wonder if you saying on video that they can pick from your Instagram counts as a license or if it has to be written because whatever.
1:20 For there to be a picture they'd have to find one that has a suitable license for it's use, wikipedia isn't going to steal any random picture from google.
17:15 it's in Ukrainian btw, which is even more interesting considering that mostly people from post-soviet countries tend to write in Russian on sites such as Wikipedia, yet here we are
Yes, that surprised me the most.🤣
Joey: I want to speak to Wikipedia manager
Wikipedia manager: Hey, son
Something Joey might have missed is the link to his old Wordpress website in the Wiki panel.
It's still active, so why not.
Waiting for the review of Garnt and Connor's wikipedia pages. XD
CDawgVA's editor, Evanit0 made a video about his wikipedia page.
Joey, that is not Russian language, that is Ukrainian. They both use The Cyrillic script (writing system)
considering the way things are going rn, it might turn out to be right after all
He also mixed up Persian with Arabic, so it's like a double tap of accidental offensiveness.

Hey Joey, something seems wrong with the bitrate. The video looks quite "blocky" even at 4k. Don't know if it's just for the camera though.

On the photo issue they get very very specific about having properly licensed stuff - if you can CC license something or perhaps upload a photo to commons and assert it's your own work it can be used.

EXACTLY
He sounds different to me too
I don't think so
It really does, it sounds very light for some reason
Oh Joey! We Finns are really damn happy that you visited our cons! I remember both of them! :D
The community is really dedicated, so I don't find it as surprising that there is a page about Joey in Croatian :D
Also take into account that there is a large community of Croatians who emigrated to Australia sometime during the previous century, one example being Lorde (her mother is of Croatian descent and our previous president awarded Lorde with a honorary citizenship) :D
Congrats, Joey!
@@Kolket1389 Now you guys in the Balkans just need to watch Attack on Titan so you stop killing each other
@@Kolket1389 oh, that's actually really cool!
@@sambros2 People are cool, it's mostly politicians that keep the fire going... And smaller extremist groups...

17:09 that is persian which uses the arabic script but is in a completely different language family than arabic. but is still interesting how there is no arabic article yet there is a persian one since there are more articles written in arabic than they are in persian. (i think there is over a million for arabic and around 800'000 for persian)
17:15 and that's ukrainian which is uses the cyrillic alphabet, the same alphabet that russian uses. a fun fact about ukrainian is that it is considered to be much more closer to belarusian than russian. (ukrainian has over 1'100'000 wikipedia articles and russian has over 1'700'000)
sorry for this long comment, just wanted to spread some info about these languages.
Wouldnt be surprised if it was made by his dad after a couple drinks
What if both Joey's Parents did a competition where they make him a Wikipedia page? Like, his Dad making him an English version while his mother makes a Japanese one.
The high school thing might have been added by someone who went to the same school 🤔 and anime wasn't growing more popular around the world in 2010 😅 I was bullied for liking anime until like... 2016 or so 🤣
There's been a lot of changes to the wiki since this video dropped and I assume there will be more when this video gets traction.
Going over the change logs it's funny how many times a copyright violating image was added and removed from the article. We need pro wiki editors on this.
If you go to the "Talk" tab in Joey's page, the first comment starts with "I am Joey's father and would like the following edits made".
So.. yeah there's that x)

Joey's dad being the best Chad dad
Whoever made or edits Joey's wikipedia page is going to see this video and change or add a lot of stuff (hopefully)
His dad is just messing with his son
“Hey, son I wrote you a Wikipedia page” - probably Joey’s dad
