Did this today. Last drain and fill was 45,000 miles ago. Jet black and a clump of sludge on the lower drain plug with the magnet. Valvoline 80/90 premium gear oil. The gears are happy again! Nice concise video, well done!
Precise!? No, precise is using the proper tools for the steps. Guesstimating it should never be an option. The torque to both the drain and filler plugs is 39.2N.m-53.9N.m (29.0ft.lbs-39.7ft.lbs) so to be exact you put it in the middle of both specs. 46.5N.m or 34.3ft.lbs.
Good helpful video, thank you. Yes the tapered plugs can crack the case if over torqued so care is needed here. (Tapered plugs are also common in transmissions and other gearboxes.) I would not put thread sealant on the end threads because it could contaminate the new fluid -- I would put it only on the last 3-4 threads toward the head of the plug. That's just me. Thanks again.
I normally put the sealant about two threads in since allot of plugs do no fully bottom out like these ones do. This allows the sealant to fully work on the threads. Most automotive drain plugs are actually NPTF plugs made just for the automotive environment and don't need any sealant but it is still recommended by the manufacturer. Either way a small trace of sealant that may get close to the internal fluids they are sealing will never ever be an issue.
Maybe you can help, have 2013 mazda cx9, trying to remove coupling from rest of rear differential while still on car. Drive shat and I think all necessary bolts are removed, coupling is stuck fast onto the diff. What am I missing? Thanks.
So I have the same exact vehicle and there’s fluid all over on the left side the same side you are currently working on. I’m pretty sure it is differential fluid but it’s only coming out on the left. Side so what could be the issue is literally all over right there where the shaft goes in and where the fill plug is
Whats with the new Mazda gear oil? SG1 hypoid gear oil. Is it different from the regular 80w90 stuff? Do you think I can put full syn 80w90 in a Mazda that requires the SG1 stuff?

Hi. This came up in my search for my Mazda CX-9 2010 AWD perhaps it’s the same diff? On AWD vehicles does it have a from and rear diff to do? Or just a rear? Great video. So easy to understand. Good clean process. Well done.
Rob Sea really. Makes sense. Can’t believe I didn’t even think of that. Damn. Twice the work 🤪 I’ll try to find the front as well so I know what I’m in for. I wonder why the different fluids for each? Is the front called a Transfer Case?
Hello. I have a mazde cx9 2008 mileage 185 thousand miles. I have replaced all the wheel bearings. I still have the humming, humming under the car. from 70 km / h up you can clearly hear the sound of the f16😁 plane. The mechanic was not looking at the rear bridge. I looked underneath and noticed a wet driveshaft from the left exit of the bridge. There is a slight play when I move the driveshaft up and down. Can this play make noises like a bearing in a wheel? please help.
I got a good question, is it possoble of removing the crankshaft without removing the engine on a mazda cx9 2010 brother? I really dont want to remove the engine🤦🏻♂️
Engineer 1: "Let's just make the fill and drain plugs the same size so the poor bastards laying on their garage floors changing the diff fluid only need one socket." Engineer 2: "What are you crazy? Why make it simple when you can make it complicated?" Engineer 1: "You're right, what was I thinking?!?"
Hey thank you, im very much. I got a cx9, and I love it, I had it for 4 months now, and wanted to winterize it, but is not sure if I should change the rear differential in preparation for the winter. what do you suggest? How do I know if its time to service the rear differential?
Only if you have 60,000 miles or more. You should not have to "winterize" a rear differential. You don't want to use lighter weight lubricant, because the differential will overheat.
Many owners fail to do this service. Truck owners are better because you see the big round ball but passenger cars they are hidden and some cars do not even have one if they are front wheel drive. I have to remind my clients.
These are the Tools and Parts I Recommend:
80W-90 Axle Fluid (1-2qts)-
amzn.to/2H7KYpl
Thread Sealant-
amzn.to/2EvtO3a
Fluid Pump-
amzn.to/2TfLc3P
Whats the year of the cx9?
NOT FOR A 2018 OR 2019 IT TAKES MAZDA PART # 0000-77-SG1-QT
Anyone know where to get the Drain and Fill plug replacements? Since these guys often are corroded and strip
This is best clean video I have seen for rear differential fluid

Hey I like the way you do your work, clear, clean, and precise. Keep it up, thanks!

Great job. Nice attention to detail Brian!
Nice work, it has a drain plug that makes the job so much easier, and the diff gets completely drained unlike the PTU.

At least the plugs are out in the open. Looks inviting and easy to ace.
Hello, is that only for AWD vehicles? I own two mazda cx5s one front wheel drive and one AWD. Thank you!

Another great video.
very good presentation and a very good job
What is the torque spec for the plugs.

Thank You. 😊
What year vehicles does this video apply to.
What year is this for? I want to do this on my 2016. Thanks

You have a front and rear differential. On front you need 75w-140 fluid. On rear you need 80w-90. He has a video of oh to do it on front as well.
Rob Sea really. Makes sense. Can’t believe I didn’t even think of that. Damn. Twice the work 🤪 I’ll try to find the front as well so I know what I’m in for. I wonder why the different fluids for each? Is the front called a Transfer Case?
Nice video. Clean work.
Rear differential exist on rear wheel drive & all wheel drive cars only, right?
My son's car is a front wheel drive
Please advise
New sub here. I like this video here.
I never knew such thing thanks

I wish he would answer these questions.
What is your experience with jeeps? Want to do gear swap and your reviews are the best. Like to give my money to local people.
Que vídeo tan bueno explica muy bien se comprende bien
Hello! Where is the oil change reset on 2015 cx9?
What year is your mazda cx9, is it same fluid for 2020?
Great vid. Thanks Brian
Clean job, nice video. Thanks.
I got a good question, is it possoble of removing the crankshaft without removing the engine on a mazda cx9 2010 brother?
I really dont want to remove the engine🤦🏻♂️
I would not.
Is it okay to change it for the first time after 120k ?
yes
muy buena presentacion y muy buen trabajo

Do these diffs have an LSD function, that's the only reason I have seen that seems to mandate a change of oil, and what made it so black?
No
My CX-9 has 130k on her not sure if this was ever done , doing eight rear wheel bearing tomorrow I'm going to do this as well
Hi,
'can I use "Lucas Oil LUC10046 SAE 80W-90 Heavy Duty Gear Oil - 1 Gallon , White" instead?
I wouldn't use Lucas for anything ever.
How about Valvoline?
I couldn't fine Motorcraft.....
I'm wondering if you change sooner than 60k. I was thinking 20-30k since there is no cooling
On a truck yes but on a smaller vehicle like this 60k is just fine.

i gather u work at a dealership as well as here?
No, I used to work at a Ford dealer for 10 years before opening my own shop.
@@BSGAutomotive how long and how u like it on ur own?
Ok whats 2 quarts in real measure, how many litres?
Guessing will work on a 2012 ford edge

Is this the same for a 2011 ford escape?
946 Mill, thanks.
You should tell your viewers this entire CX9 unerpins are FORD. I DO OUR MKX EVERY 80K AND USE REDLINE DIFF FLUID.
Arent u a ford guy?
Looks like I'll be doing this every 30,000 miles
We have a 2018 cx5 awd. Is it the same?
No
