In the city where I live, there's a fairly popular art museum that would do free admission on the first Friday of the month (before Covid). And then you hear Thunderroad or State Trooper for the first time. And it all makes sense. With eyes wide open, humble, through his mind and voice the spirit of music is alive for all of us.

Speaking of Dylan lyrics, one line that I've thought about this past year is from "Sweetheart Like You". "Patriotism is the last refuge to which a scoundrel clings." It reminds me of a certain someone we all know.
Interesting observation! Never thought about it. Charlie Rose turned into mush when interviewing media celebs which was a black mark against him in my books; I think Stephen in a healthy way is just a big fan which is great.

I would have to pick the "hurricane" as my favorite Dylan song, I imagine Bruce would approve ? I feel like I have known Bruce since my 1970s HS days. He's important to me, no other way to put it.
Well it would tie in with their shared political conscience, so yeah. I also grew up with his music since the '70s so I get it; just don't want to one of those guys who say to people who have just discovered something, well I was there at the beginning so I have special rights which in no way are you saying at all! I think Bruce's description of your life as a car containing all the previous versions of you is very true. As someone who is 2 years older than Bruce, I recognise the analogy and the fact that sometimes it's the earlier version who's driving. This is especially bad when my early 30s incarnation is at the wheel. I wasn't very pleasant then. Age tells you that you might give that person some slack.

Hey Bruce, it's nice to reconnect with you and your music. I have many many great stories about hearing and even playing your music. One day in 1979, I was hanging out with some friends on the balcony across the street. There was a real heavy rainstorm presence in the area around Calgary but we were sheltered with a roof and comfortable. A friend and I were singing Born to Run and really hitting it up. We were approaching the climax of the refrain, "Baby we were born to . . . " and there was a monstrous bolt of lightning right there and then so we couldn't hear ourselves sing "RUN!" It was a magical gift as is your music. Thank you. Come up to Vancouver when isolation settles down.

So I don’t have to think
One of my favorite songs
The screen doors slams, Mary’s dress waves
Like a vision, she dances across the porch, while the radio plays
Roy Orbison singing for the lonely...hey that’s me and I want you to hold me...
My line is: “the harmonicas play the skeleton keys and the rain / and these visions of Johanna are now all that remain”
My 3 favourites
It's alright ma
It takes a lot to laugh
Idiot wind
That'll probably have changed again by this afternoon though 😟
The slowed down, NYC version of Idiot Wind is something else man. So incredibly beautiful
I'm sure your top 3 has rotated a few times since your original comment
Changing of the Guards
Chimes of Freedom
When the Ship Comes In
Not more tender but confident and brave enough to show your tenderness and generous enough to forgive others and tolerate minor behaviours in others. But also more likely to call out idiots.......
First Dylan line that comes to me: "If today, was not an endless highway" ("Tomorrow is a long time" -- but only the Elvis-sung version).
Inspired by the Odetta version

LUV STEPHEN !!!!! YOU ARE HILARIOUS AND YET GROUNDED I LOVE IT
I would have to pick the "hurricane" as my favorite Dylan song, I imagine Bruce would approve ? I feel like I have known Bruce since my 1970s HS days. He's important to me, no other way to put it.
Well it would tie in with their shared political conscience, so yeah. I also grew up with his music since the '70s so I get it; just don't want to one of those guys who say to people who have just discovered something, well I was there at the beginning so I have special rights which in no way are you saying at all! Great comment.
I listen to whole albums over and over - Dylan and Queen mostly.
Good choice. I re-read books over and over again, listen to music -- have an acquaintance who doesn't get it their loss!!
I am only 64 but I get your great comment!
Great interview! Should've asked him about rough and rowdy ways! A legend speaking on another legend.
We learned more from a three minute record baby then we ever learned in school. 😊
I'll know my song well before I start singing

I love the Born to run anniversary story
Love this!! My favourite line is "The bridge at midnight trembles / The country doctor rambles..."
Yes, to dance beneath the diamond sky ,with one hand waving free, silhouetted by the sea.
A couple of my favs..."when you got nothing, you got nothing to lose"....and "you can't win with a losing hand". Nobody, I mean nobody better than Dylan.
Nobody …of course no body …
Mr Tambourine Man, It's alright Ma, My Back Pages, Like a rolling stone. Love the line "a self ordained professors' tongue to serious to fool" reminds me of many professors I had - but I was so much older then I'm younger than that now.
The last album I listened to all the way through was Nebraska. The story that weaves its way through that album I never tire of listening to.
Good grief, this man will ALWAYS be a true Poet Laureate of the USA & World... the re-tracking of “If I Were A Priest” on the new album is one of his Top 10 best songs. 🔥🤟🏼
'Changing of the Guard' ...Love Minus Zero/No Limit...that's mine
Terrific question (as usual) from Stephen at about 2:35.
I thought he'd mention "Chimes of Freedom", which he's covered.
I love My Back Pages from around that same period.
Anybody who's never seen the vid of him doing that song in East Berlin should stop listening to this video and go check that out immediately.
@@emsleywyatt3400 That's the version I was thinking of.
"With God On Our Side" is one of my favorite Dylan tunes ♡
I'm not particularly a fan of Springsteen, but this clip is worth it for that excellent and accurate description of consciousness.
Agreed! His reflection about all the “yous in the car” was something I’ve been needing to hear.
What a boring interview!
@@matthewhartt5887 I don’t know what you were watching but Bruce is not known for exciting interviews I thought Stephen did a great job here!
You should be.
@@matthewhartt5887 What a boring comment.
Top 3 Bruce songs:
Thunder Road
10th Ave Freeze Out
The River
You gave me shivers. I think I agree!!!!!!
His voice attracts others. Blend together.
My favorite is the river. I prefer listening to whole albums then singles, but i am definitely old school and Bruce's age.
