I’m thinking many records got ripped up during the 1930s because people needed to buy more important things than needles when there was a depression. They didn’t care about damaging records when they needed to find a job and eat. so the same needle was probably constantly used. And people still used older machines too. Probably the reason some of the 78 community bemoans acoustic machines.
