  • @DKTractors Here's a video to help users start the bernzomatic map oxygen torch quickly and easily. Basically get the map flame as large as you can while the end of it still touches the torch top. Put a mark on the oxygen dial and count the turns to open basically you are shooting for around 1.75 turns open. See my other video for more tips • Bernzomatic Map/Oxy to... ‪@DKTractors‬

    Thanks for the video!
    I'm just about to use this. i had no idea how to set this up properly. I had no reference. The instructions that came with the kit were a bit vague, but placing that mark on the Oxygen tank is some genius common sense stuff. I had no idea I had to turn the knob that much.
    Now that I have a better understanding on how to operate this thing, I can now try to heat up a pair of seized trailer door hinges. Regular propane wasn't doing the trick.

    Great explanation. I was frustrated with the kit too until I found a video explaining what you just did. The other tip is if it's a windy day quit after it blows out a few times.
    I went to a local welding supply house to look at a portable oxyacetylene kit with refillable tanks and you're looking at around 450 out the door. While this kit isn't cheap for the amount I use it it does the job and is more convenient to refill than driving to the welding supply house. If I used the kit more my opinion would change but for now it does the job.

    I never had a problem with mapp gas' the oxy addition is a step up' but like any torch you got to ease into it - here's a tip' buy the small accessory kit with the round needle like pins to clean the tip occasionally as it will need to be done. Get some flux and various types of brazing rods and learn to braze different types of metal - you'll fall in love with it - I was brazing AC units as an AC contractor making $2500.00 a week installing central air and heat in housing projects' also' learn to use Nitrogen to prevent carbon residue buildup in the copper tubing your working on. This can be a nice job perspective if you want to learn it.

    good video. I was trying to find a video of someone that has made a portable propane kit with small propane and oxygen tanks running a FULL size acetylene torch. small tanks such as yours. I saw one video with tiny propane and mapp gas tanks. I would like to see one with small oxygen tanks too. it would seem like a cheaper alternative to buying a portable oxy/acetalyne tank kit.

    I had the same issue when I got mine. It wouldn't stay lit. As soon as I put the oxy to it, it would start puffing and blow itself out. So I in hooked the oxy tank, opened the oxy valve all the way, closed it then put it back on. Next time I fired it up it worked fine. Works great for brazing copper and brass. Haven't tried stainless or anything heavier though.

    When you're heating up your parts, remember that the tip of any flame is always the hottest part. Use the very tip of the flame for heating things. The only minor issue you might run into is that it's slightly more localized than the center of the length of the flame, the point you're hiding it at, but it's a negligible difference, however the difference in temperature is not negligible and does make a very big difference in many cases.

    • @DKTractors
      @DKTractors  6 років тому

      I was taught the tip of the inner flame is the hottest. The inner cone is blue, while the outer cone is yellow.
      That alone indicates the inner cone should be hottest, and the tip of that inner cone is the hottest portion of the cone.

    mabye you learned that "that's about it," isn't close to what you can do with the little time you got. with a clean tip, a must, light the gas with flame almost leaving the tip, don't mess around trying to find the perfect flame, now the oxygen you have less time, so turn it on so you get a cone, for welding a neutral to slightly hotter oxidized cone (it's sharp cone,) and when you got it set start welding the preheated metal (so preheat the work first something like propane or mapp if it's all you got, get the work almost red hot,) by nearly touching the cone on the joint, that's the hottest spot. gonna move quick the oxygen only last 10 or 15 mins.if you have heavy or thick metal, use oxygen acetylene.

    • @georgedennison3338
      @georgedennison3338 6 років тому

      Are you actually trying to weld aluminum, or are you 'brazing' it using the Alumiweld type rod?
      If you are using the Alumiweld rod, the trick is to heat the metal, NOT the rod. Once the alum reaches 750° the rod will melt when you touch it to the alum.
      Well, that's the theory. I haven't been able to get my little MAPP/oxy to work, at all, and the propane/oxy setup with the same torch doesn't get hot enough, for some reason.
      I'm going to try pre-heating the metal with a large propane only blow torch I have, and using some of that cooling gel to limit conduction of the heat to the rest of the alum frame.
      If I make any great discoveries, I'll let you know.

    • @georgedennison3338
      @georgedennison3338 6 років тому

      I picked up one of those torch down type roof setups for roofing, and discovered it makes a great, (and much less expensive to use than my oxy/acet rose bud), rosebud for heating.
      The first project I used it on was modifying a stinger type trailer hitch to fit my old truck. It work great for heating and bending the ¼ & ⅜" steel.
      As fast and as thorough as my oxy/acet torch.
      It might put out too big a flame for suspension work without shielding everything, but I just remembered a trick I saw years ago.
      If you have a ½" or thicker piece of steel with a hole in the middle, you can use it a shield, and flame 'localizer', and not burn up your suspension trying to heat a bolt for removal.
      If the fastener you are trying to remove with heat would loosen via shrinkage of the metal, (bolt vs nut), you could try some of that freezing penetration oil. It works great in the right situations.
      Heat causes expansion, and loosens a frozzen fastener, but works better with a nut, where it can expand away from the threads.
      The freezing oil causes contraction, a bolt would then contract away from the threads. The opposite of heating.
      CRC sells it as Freeze Off, Loctite sells it as LB 8040 or Freeze and Release.
      I have only been able to find it at industrial suppliers.

    I needed this advise. I was using too much MAP. Curious - what happens when the MAP tank runs empty (Im on 2nd OX tank) - then you're burning the pure oxygen and the red tank blows up? They don't cover that in the manual either.

    • @DKTractors

    • @sarahszabo4323
      @sarahszabo4323 9 років тому

      +LanguageBoneHead Yes, oxygen is an oxidizer and MAP gas is a reducer. They react to form an oxidation reduction reaction which produces a lovely flame cone. When the reducer is depleted, the oxidizer just flows out with nothing to reduce. That being said, it should be turned off because in the presence of excess oxygen, you may find that if you light a match, the oxygen will reduce it rather quickly, like in an instant, so your arm may catch fire due to the large increase in heating, and it may reduce you, burning your entire body instantly.

      Genuine MAPP gas can be used in combination with oxygen for heating, soldering, brazing and even welding due to its high flame temperature of 2925 °C (5300 °F) in oxygen.
      Silver melting point is 1,763°F
