      been there done that. When I moved into my first apartment, I had no cell service for a month and a half. signed up for verizon, but there is no FiOS in my community, so I had to get DSL.

    • @Nuetral768
      @Nuetral768 Рік тому +1

      Probably would be... You know most apartments don't accept checks anymore, you gotta pay online. Businesses use online services to hire, communicate, keep track of inventory, ship product, clock in and out. Medical personnel are severely understaffed nowadays, if every person going to online sites to diagnose themselves showed up to a doctor's office it would cause a huge collapse (especially since most offices use internet, even the ER, to put you in their systems)... then there would be insurance collapses as well. Air and sea transport would have to go through extensive retraining. And that's all just the tip of the iceberg, not even to mention what it might do to us socially. We'd probably be able to recover eventually, but it would make this pandemic look like child's play by comparison before we did recover (which would probably take a really long time). Meanwhile we would see a huge increase in homelessness and substance abuse (like we're seeing now)... to quote Bruce Campbell "You need it to get it." (so we will essentially lose a huge chunk of our population due to the fact that we blame, not facilitate for, those that have lost everything they had to circumstance... and the problem with that is we may be fostering weaker people whom just didn't have to face as much as stronger people whom faced too much, so although we like to look at it as the strong surviving and the weak dying off that isn't necessarily true and we could actually weaken drastically and dynamically as a result).

    The filming thing did get much bigger in the 1980s when the monster video cameras came out, but I'll tell you this: it really started in the 1940s and 1950s when Regular 8mm and Super 8mm film cameras and projectors became available to regular people (we're talking about real, actual celluloid film here; when you finished a 3-minute reel, you had to send it to a film lab, usually through the grocery or somewhere like K-mart, to have your film developed in a darkroom; you also purchased the little reel cartridges at the grocery). I have a whole box of film reels of my mother as a child in the early 1950s! This continued all through the '60s and '70s. I grew up in the '70s and my mother used a Super 8mm film camera to make films of me and my brother acting silly. I used the same camera when I started making my first experimental films in the mid-1980s.

    The internet not working episode "Overlogging" was a spoof of The Grapes or Wrath, and the camera recording and pan flute bands was a spoof of Cloverfield or the shakycam/found footage type of movies. It's much more noticeable in the 2nd episode: first was Pandemic, and second Pandemic 2 - The Startling of Season 15.

    South Park has always done fantastic "disaster movie" parodies/satire. The guinea pig episode must have been inspired by Cloverfield/Blair Witch/etc, but with the "idiot dork dad is controlling the camera" twist.

    I think the craze with filming everything got srarted when Americas Funniest Home Videos became popular. It was the mixture of affordable video cameras and the potential to "possibly" win some money if you caught something funny while filming. Of course you had to be filming as much as possible so as not to miss something so we ended up with people filming non stop. 😜

    I love how South Park has the "WHAT'S HAPPENING!!!!????? over-the-top guy in the background, in the same way there's the recurring audio sample on Trailer Park Boys of "WHAT IN THE FUCK!!!????" every time things get out of control and people are talking over eachother. It's like purely audio slapstick comedy. It's incredibly funny, but you have to make sure you only ever use it like once per episode. It's the comedic equivalent of a jump-scare, if the jump-scare was only audio.

    Cameras available at home wasn't much of a thing until the 60's when the technology was starting to rapidly become available to the public. Really old cameras required plates, chemicals, a dark room, and special film to get a picture to develop so the hobby was super expensive until instant film was a thing, like Polaroids.
    Before then there was this overlap of portraiture for posterity that transitioned from oil/watercolor paintings to daguerreotype cameras sometime in the 1800s.
    It was a huge tourist trap thing when the technology spread around the time of the Civil War and a lot of photographers were hired by the government as part of an economic recovery program for artists during the Great Depression.
    So you could argue the vanity was always there, it just transitioned from portraiture that only the rich could afford, to a more widespread phenomenon thanks to the growing accessibility of the camera.
    Might as well put my college course to good use.

But if you really look at videos from the '90s when people were holding camcorders you will see that people didn't want to be on camera and tend to shy away, especially women. But when cell phones started using cameras and was able to manipulate the photos you take that's when it became a big deal in everybody wanted to be in front of the camera lens of some sort.
