  • Eight selections from 16-2/3 RPM Seeburg Basic Background Music records. The first six are from records labeled RR-70 and RR-71. If I am correct, RR-70 records were to be placed in use April 1, 1977 and RR-71 records were to be placed in use on July 1, 1977. The last two tunes are from a record with a place in use date of October 1, 1974. Played on an ELAC Miracord 40A turntable.

Muzak, which WVOR-FM played, was one room.(one puny little control room))
It was also an FM radio sideband of
Rochester, New York FM radio station WVOR, 100.5.

Now that kind of music is the kind of music that WVOR FM played. The Muzak equipment at the radio station, was sleazy, older Muzak equipment- older Muzak broadcasting equipment, which were great big reel to reel tape machines, built by Teletronix/Muzak. They had a round speaker, in which the Muzak came out of, and the Muzak had an amplified, hollow sound.

That first song (and the 2nd song which seems to be the sequel) is stellar!! I love the percussion work. And that elevating violin sound (very Mellotron sounding) transitioning to the expressive trumpets only a musical genius could have written. Sounds like a theme coming from war through the mid-century growth, success and expansion. No wonder this clip has more views than the rest.. Thanks for posting!!!

One day, I was out with Dad in the car for the day or so on Saturday morning, and we had lunch at a new place which was also called the Charcoal Pit,which also had a drive in.
We got out of the car, and as we did, the amplified, hollow, metal, transistor radio sound of Muzak caught my ears.
    "That's the drive in.
Charcoal Pit has a drive in, and they also have the intercom system like they do at the Arrows restaurant, with the call microphones!!
Now the Charcoal Pit also has Muzak that's playing over the call microphones!!
    I know. It's that
piped in music, in which you are very curious and turned on about, son!!" Dad said.
We went inside the restaurant, and I also heard Muzak in the restaurant, from a speaker in the wall, which was also an
old fashioned speaker, that had a volume control on it.
I ordered a Coke with plenty of ice in it, an egg and bacon salad sandwich on delicious seeded Jewish rye bread with a helping of ridged sour cream and onion potato chips and a few dill pickles, cottage cheese, and a dish of thick chocolate custard.
"I had the Marconi sandwich, cottage cheese, and custard for lunch today.
Man,oh, man, oh, man, oh, man, oh, man,oh, man, oh, man, was that ev-er a good lunch to-day.
Think what I'll do as to when we get home, I'll go upstairs and look in the back bedroom closet, and I'll look and see if there's any
cracks in the wall, and if there is any cracks in the wall, I'll squeeze one of my love pillows that Nana made.
    Then,I'll pet my kitty Sam,and he'll start
purring like a pipe organ, and smell my right eyeball!!" I said, and I also asked to go and use the restroom.
    "Are you kidding me??
Not in that freezing cold, dirty, filthy place that's way back there, you sure don't!!
Well, go ahead, if you have to go, and don't you scream or shout when you're back there, either!!
Because your voice echoes and reverberates back in there, HORRIBLY!!" Dad said.

When I was little, I used to go to Southtown Plaza, and the plaza had
Muzak that was piped in through speakers in the plaza, which also had a hollow, amplified sound to it.
"I hear piped in music!" I said to
    Mr. Domince.
    "Yes. The plaza has a
record player that's in the main office!"
    he said to me.
    I heard a rock guitar
instrumental, which also had a hollow sound to it.
I then went, and I asked if it was a record player.
"It's music, that comes from a special radio station! We get a special station that
comes over phone wires !" a plaza personnel said to me.
"I was wrong. It is a
    radio broadcast of some sort!"

When I was a little boy, I was in the Star Markets on Ridge Road in Greece.
I was in the back storeroom, and I heard the tinny, amplified, hollow sound of Muzak plus Star Markets commercials from a horn speaker in one wall.
I used the restroom, which was way downstairs and also way in the back
The restroom had an echo, because it was a big place. I saw a frosted glass outside window, plus l heard the tinny sound of Star Markets commercials from a horn speaker in the wall.
"Now more music on Star Markets radio!! The Star Markets radio network!!"the speaker blared out, and more music followed, which had a transistor radio sound.
The restroom was also a very, very dirty, freezing cold place.
I let out a deafening, bloodcurdling, pained, earsplitting yell and scream of,
"I WANT VANILLA ICE CREME WITH FILTHY DIRTY FIDDLE STRINGS ON TOP AND A DEAD MOUSE ON TOP!!
BLOW YOUR MIND OUT TO KINGDOM COME MAN!!"

"Now how about we go to Campi's??
Someplace that you've never been to!!" Dad said, and we had lunch at Campi's,which also was a pizza and sandwich restaurant.
We entered the restaurant, and I heard the amplified, hollow sound of Muzak in the restaurant, which came from a speaker in the ceiling. The music had a full high fidelity sound, and also an amplified, hollow sound.
I ordered a Coke with plenty of ice in it, a delicious hot Italian meatball and sausage sub on delicious toasted Asiago cheese flavored bread with a helping of ridged sour cream and onion potato chips, and a tossed green salad, with delicious chunky blue cheese dressing on top.
"I hear Muzak, Dad! Piped in music!" I said.

Oh, yeah... they sure got "mileage" out of the oldies. I recall hearing 1960s and early 70s tunes put out by the KPM and Amphonic Record Libraries (Syd Dale, Johnny Hawksworth, James Clarke, Alan Morehouse, Keith Mansfield, David Lindup, Alan Hawkshaw, Johnny Pearson, etc) playing over our Muzak system at work as late as the early 1990s. It was great!

    • @70sleftover
      @70sleftover 5 років тому +4

I admit I had a similar reaction, and then remembered how back in the '70s this was what you would hear from store speakers. I have to think my parents' generation were doing much of the shopping and working back in the '70s, so music that they would feel comfortable might have been the target by all these background music companies. The tunes were more recent but the arrangements definitely sound like a decade earlier. Anyway, I definitely remember working at the local Kmart in spring 1984 and noticing how current the "Muzak" (as we referred to it generically) sounded, with "Beat It" by Michael Jackson instrumentalized in that inimitable background music way (punctuated of course with ads for the top-line Kmart car battery that produced "650 cold-cranking amps" and featured "Delco-Remy technology").

the first song reminds me of an old Ep of bewitched. Samantha had some weird kind of witches disease or someone put a spell on her, and She and Darin were at the grocery store, and a song like that was playing over the speakers and she was dancing around, I mean really rocking out, and every one was just staring at her like she had lost her mind. HA HA

    • @RicksGAFaves
      @RicksGAFaves 6 років тому +2

lol, I know it well. The spell actually came from Endora who wanted Samantha to act more like her free-spirited cousin Serena. So while Sam and Darren are casually shopping at the frozen food case, Serena is out at a nightclub. Naturally, she soon breaks out dancing. Well so does Sam - moving around, arms flailing around while Darren frantically tries to grab her and hold her down. One of the funniest things I've ever seen!

It's not cheesy at all. It's beautiful. I never understood the hate directed at music like this. And I loved that the Seeburg background music system was designed to only repeat a song like every other day. Modern playlists repeat the same talentless top-40 noise like every 90-120 minutes.
I have a modest collection of around 60 Seeburg, Merrimac, and Customusic records ranging from the early 1960s to the mid 1970s, the majority of it from the Basic and Mood (and equivalent Customusic) libraries, plus one or two from the industrial series and even a rare Kingtone disc. I'm working to make high-quality MP3s of my records and acquire more if I can.

It just doesn't fit my head that this is *really* the kind of dreck that polluted the air in stores in that decade. I mean, 1974 was just yesterday! This music sounds like it came straight out of a dystopia. This is music made to be as divorced as possible from everything that music represents. I mean, I understand that, in department stores and shopping malls, the less individuality and critical thinking people have, the more they spend, but, Jesus Christ, this is overkill. Listening to this thing is worse than being dead.

    • @FernieCanto
      @FernieCanto 3 роки тому

@@FernieCanto They simply don't. Seeburg or MUZAK claimed that they did, but it's just orchestral music. Henry Mancini, Ray Conniff and Herb Alpert recorded music exactly the same as this. Alpert's orchestra even played on some Seeburg sessions. You literally have to be a snob with no taste and a terrible world view to dismiss these tracks as just "bullshit made to make you spend more". That's simply pure nonsense.

As usual, someone on the internet wants to personally attack me without knowing who I am. In case you don't know, there *is* some orchestral music from that time that I kind of enjoy: Franck Pourcel, Paul Mauriat, Richard Clayderman, that stuff. Not that I'm the world's biggest fan, but I have some affection for them.
So yeah, I'm 100% a snob for liking Ballade por Adeline.
