The Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) Journey

  • www.sluhospital... -- Dr. Richard Bucholz works with a multidisciplinary team of specialists to treat Parkinson's disease, essential tremor, dystonia, and obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) patients with deep brain stimulation. Patients who are candidates for DBS are often at a point in their disease in which they no longer respond effectively to medication to control their symptoms. DBS is currently being studied to treat people who suffer from severe, chronic depression and epilepsy. The technology that allows the team to perform the surgery without an invasive stabilizing head frame was pioneered at SLU.
DBS can have a profound effect on the lives of people who have been suffering from movement disorder related symptoms for a long period of time.

Anyone who is suffering with this, you've got to see a MOVEMENT disorders neurologist to find out if this is a viable option for you now or in the future.
My story: I'm 65 and I had it done in February, 2018 at University of Rochester Medical Center, NY state for Intentional Essential Tremor to minimize my right hand tremors. I cried when they turned on the stimulation in the operating room. I've NEVER been able to write with ZERO effort and virtually perfect to the degree that one of the nurses said that I have beautiful hand writing. In a few months, I hope, I'm gonna have it done to treat my left hand which is worse than my right hand ever was. I can hardly wait. I may even be able to work again!

I had this surgery at age 40 after being diagnosed at 33. Best thing I ever did. It doesn't fix things but I can't imagine how miserable I'd be if I'd not had Bilateral DBS STN. Doctors Bucholz and Chand in this video are my neurosurgeon and neurologist and are awesome!

Had D.B.S. done 5 years ago. Brilliant results. I am an artist and was able to paint again! Had this done in Australia. My battery went flat a month ago and I couldn't believe how much my tremor had advanced in those 5 years.it was frightening! Surgery for new battery and I am good again and back to painting.

I had this done bilaterally 2 years apart. My essential tremor was not in the major category by any means. It's been three years ago since the 1st. This is almost 2024. I don't usually turn my controller off. But, I did here last week to see how my tremors have progressed. They have gone way beyond what they were preop 3 years ago, unmanageable in just that amount of time. I can't tell you how thankful I am, first of all, to Jesus Christ, who has given physicians this knowledge and for the physicians who learn and perform it. It IS a wonderful thing! Not every procedure works for everyone, no matter what that procedure may be. Everything in life has risks.

I had this surgery in July of ‘24 with generator placement in Aug. I have only had the first modulation of the generator and it was fantastic. I had maxed out medications in about 15 years because I was late in life being diagnosed. I was no where near as bad as this lady but couldn’t write and difficulty with eating and drinking. I wrote a birthday card to my Grandson this week and cried like a baby! Some things have changed since this surgery but all for the better! I do have two I impingements on leads effecting things I can do in future life, MRIs and such. My left hand has begun to tremor a little but next week I go back for adjustment modulation, takes time to get everything adjusted. So thankful for this surgery!

I had this done 4 years ago and was a GODSEND! I suffered with cervical dystonia (head twisting and severe tremors) for over 30 years. I, too, had reached the end of the line as far as efficacy of medications and Botox treatments. The Miracle worker that performed this was Dr. Christopher Duma out of Hoag Hospital in Newport Beach, California. Medtronic supplied the equipment and it went very smoothly and very successfully and if I had to do it over again, I would in a heartbeat.

My husband was diagnosed with Parkinson's eight years ago and on Feb. 11th he had his left side done. Tomorrow they will install the battery and on March 25th the right side will be done. I can't wait to see him without his tremors and for his other side effects (due to his meds) to be over. This is not a complete cure but for us this is our cure now. DBS has also showed promising results for major depressive disorder, especially refractory symptoms. DBS stimulates either the nucleus accumbens or ventral striatum because of their connections to other brain areas. It's much more specific than electroconvulsive therapy or SSRIs that target a very wide area of the brain. Of course, it isn't a "cure", but it significantly reduces depressive symptoms like the procedure did for symptoms of ET in this video. Fascinating stuff.

Covid19 has put everything on my journey on hold. At the time the hospitals were shut down and elective surgeries were canceled I had just completed all the evaluations and was pursuing some ST, PT and OT to improve the possible outcome. I am now waiting for the orders to be lifted so that the committee can meet (too many people together is still restricted at this time) and hopefully I will be accepted for surgery. I’ve had my tremor since I was a teenager and I am now almost 68 years old. During the last year to 18 months there has been a vast progression and meds were a no go! Glad to have found this video! It’s sounds very similar to the procedure explained by my neurologist. Wish me luck!

That was pure sarcasm! I do have a meeting set in Sept with my neurologist and the neuro surgeon so hopefully by the end of the year this will be done. We need more advancements in neuroimplants and brain stimulation. Medical science now a days is a blessing but still we as humanity should now shift from more mechanistic surgical approach towards treating brain disorders to red blood sized robots doing the job of neurosergons. Instead of unsing risky invasive procedure that's being done here we could innovate biodegradable robot that could swim up the capillaries surrounding the hippocampus and implant the required area of electrode around the hyperactive neuron region. The implant would contain nanoscale resistors and an assortment of progammable transistors that are electrified by the ion exchange in the blood plasma. That way the implant would work as long as the patient is alive. With such innovation the need to send down the 4 cm long wire severing the cortical synapses can be eliminated and the risk of blood loss too. Medical science has still lot to achieve.

I hope you've had the procedure. I'm 65 and I had it done in February, 2018 at University of Rochester Medical Center, NY state for Intentional Essential Tremor to minimize my right hand tremors. I cried when they started the stimulation in the operating room. I've NEVER been able to write with NO effort and virtually perfect to the degree that one of the nurses said that I have beautiful hand writing. In a few months, I hope, I'm gonna have it done to treat my left hand which is worse than my right hand ever was. I can hardly wait. I may even be able to work again!
