The Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) Journey
Вставка

- www.sluhospital... -- Dr. Richard Bucholz works with a multidisciplinary team of specialists to treat Parkinson's disease, essential tremor, dystonia, and obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) patients with deep brain stimulation. Patients who are candidates for DBS are often at a point in their disease in which they no longer respond effectively to medication to control their symptoms. DBS is currently being studied to treat people who suffer from severe, chronic depression and epilepsy. The technology that allows the team to perform the surgery without an invasive stabilizing head frame was pioneered at SLU.
DBS can have a profound effect on the lives of people who have been suffering from movement disorder related symptoms for a long period of time.

Anyone who is suffering with this, you've got to see a MOVEMENT disorders neurologist to find out if this is a viable option for you now or in the future.
My story: I'm 65 and I had it done in February, 2018 at University of Rochester Medical Center, NY state for Intentional Essential Tremor to minimize my right hand tremors. I cried when they turned on the stimulation in the operating room. I've NEVER been able to write with ZERO effort and virtually perfect to the degree that one of the nurses said that I have beautiful hand writing. In a few months, I hope, I'm gonna have it done to treat my left hand which is worse than my right hand ever was. I can hardly wait. I may even be able to work again!
How are you today. 2022 a family member is considering this.
I had this surgery at age 40 after being diagnosed at 33. Best thing I ever did. It doesn't fix things but I can't imagine how miserable I'd be if I'd not had Bilateral DBS STN. Doctors Bucholz and Chand in this video are my neurosurgeon and neurologist and are awesome!
Had D.B.S. done 5 years ago. Brilliant results. I am an artist and was able to paint again! Had this done in Australia. My battery went flat a month ago and I couldn't believe how much my tremor had advanced in those 5 years.it was frightening! Surgery for new battery and I am good again and back to painting.
Where did you get it done, i need it done too
Nina T I had it done in Brisbane.....
How many cost are provided for this surgery?
@@mdfaizahamed1795 most of mine was covered by my private health fund . Charges vary so you would have to see neurosurgeons in your area for a quote
My father caught an infection during battery replacement and entire DBS had to be removed to cure the infection. He has been bed ridden ever since. He flew to the surgery on his own. He lost his voice walking ability after DBS.
This made me tear up. Im 19 years old and have an undiagnosed movement disorder. I hope that once I do get diagnosed I could be a candidate for DBS because I'm really missing out on life right now.
+music4everz95 My mum just undergo DBS and straight after the surgery, saw a tremendous improvement on her movement!! Stay strong girl,, all is well for u consider the advance medical technology these days!!!

music4everz95 I hope you keep faith. I have had two slow growing cancerous tumors removed and other issues and the prognosis is eleven years survival and the first was removed in 2002 and then in 2013 and I,m still here . So girl keep the faith your belief has more to do with your outcome than you realize Take Care, Brett
music4everz95. i listened to dr vansickle talk about how it might be better to do dbs earlier than before and the young onset do very well w dbs. he's from south denver neuro surg. this is not a promo i have a consult sceduled w him hoping he's right. hang tight
I have a uncle that has late stage Parkinson, he refuses DBS, it is sad but it is his choice.
So impressed with Dr. Chand and Leah Cuff, NP. I am a 37 year old Nurse Practitioner who world has been turned upside down by early onset Parkinson's. I get to met Dr. Bucholz Thursday. I pray I am a candidate for this procedure. Leah reminds me of the healthy me!! I want my life back!! Let's do this thing!!!
I had this done bilaterally 2 years apart. My essential tremor was not in the major category by any means. It's been three years ago since the 1st. This is almost 2024. I don't usually turn my controller off. But, I did here last week to see how my tremors have progressed. They have gone way beyond what they were preop 3 years ago, unmanageable in just that amount of time. I can't tell you how thankful I am, first of all, to Jesus Christ, who has given physicians this knowledge and for the physicians who learn and perform it. It IS a wonderful thing! Not every procedure works for everyone, no matter what that procedure may be. Everything in life has risks.
My dad just finished the second electrode placement in his brain and gets the battery packs in a week. I'm crying. He's felt bad for eight years, and now he'll be able to do the things he used to love doing. I can't wait to see him feel GOOD again.
Im curently in the process of getting this surgery done. Im 20 years old and cant function with my hands barely at all. When they showed her hand stop shaking suring the surgery I cried. This is amazing.
I had DBS surgery in the UK aged 67 after nearly 50 years of Dystonia causing severe tremors in my neck, hands and voice. It worked like a dream and the seven years I have had since surgery almost make up for the 50 years of acute embarrassment and frustration.
I had this surgery in July of ‘24 with generator placement in Aug. I have only had the first modulation of the generator and it was fantastic. I had maxed out medications in about 15 years because I was late in life being diagnosed. I was no where near as bad as this lady but couldn’t write and difficulty with eating and drinking. I wrote a birthday card to my Grandson this week and cried like a baby! Some things have changed since this surgery but all for the better! I do have two I impingements on leads effecting things I can do in future life, MRIs and such. My left hand has begun to tremor a little but next week I go back for adjustment modulation, takes time to get everything adjusted. So thankful for this surgery!
Teared up. Modern medicine is amazing.
Rquit also terrifying
I had this done 4 years ago and was a GODSEND! I suffered with cervical dystonia (head twisting and severe tremors) for over 30 years. I, too, had reached the end of the line as far as efficacy of medications and Botox treatments. The Miracle worker that performed this was Dr. Christopher Duma out of Hoag Hospital in Newport Beach, California. Medtronic supplied the equipment and it went very smoothly and very successfully and if I had to do it over again, I would in a heartbeat.
Oh Marilyn, I am in tears! I understand to an extent what you have been thru... I have the vagus nerve stimulator for epilepsy.... It's such a blessing to regain what you have lost.😊
I have done this surgery and it save my life, I've been suffering from dystonia from two years, i'm 20 years old and i'm from Brasil, today I have a normal life, despistes being bald, because my surgery happness 1 month ago
I have myoclonus dystonia and I’m about to get thus surgery. I’m a little nervous. Any “tips” to give me?
Hope you are not lieng
Praise God! amazing how God has given these staff and the team of Doctor's the wisdom to correct this. My husband was diagnosed with Parkinson's eight years ago and on Feb. 11th he had his left side done. Tomorrow they will install the battery and on March 25th the right side will be done. I can't wait to see him without his tremors and for his other side effects (due to his meds) to be over. This is not a complete cure but for us this is our cure now. Always trusting in our heavenly Father for total healing and again thanking God for the wisdom that he has imparted in the Doctors.
Hello
Your post brings me to tears! Jesus is the one who deserves the glory. It couldn't even be if he didn't provide the wisdom. Anyway, I get so emotional when I see a person with Parkinson's before and after. I am SO elated and grateful this is available for this disease! I only have essential tremor, and it was my little miracle. When I see and know what it does for your husband, I know it's the World!❤🎉
I wish everything has gone well since you underwent the surgery, and that God enlightens your path ever since.
I had bilateral dBS for parkinson's Disease 5 years ago at mount Sinai Hospital nyc. When they turned me on I went from shaking to calm, shaking to calm It's so nice I say it twice.
I'm in the process of having this done in Nashville Tn. For Essential Tremors... I'm only 34 yrs old and I pray for results as good as hers!!!!
Did you get it done Crystal? How are you now all these years later?
The change is absolutely PROFOUND!!
God bless all those surgeons involved
DBS has also showed promising results for major depressive disorder, especially refractory symptoms. DBS stimulates either the nucleus accumbens or ventral striatum because of their connections to other brain areas. It's much more specific than electroconvulsive therapy or SSRIs that target a very wide area of the brain. Of course, it isn't a "cure", but it significantly reduces depressive symptoms like the procedure did for symptoms of ET in this video. Fascinating stuff.
By "promising results" you mean that it actually works or that it just works for a certain percentage of patients?
+strikeout1991 Every medical treatment ever works for a "certain percentage of patients"
Please help me. As I am suffering from ocd and this bullshit is ruining my life. I am happy to be a volunteer for this dbs. Please help me.

I am absolutely fascinated by this procedure. 👏👏👏👏
I had mine done 6 years ago and now I have to go back so they can replace my battery..... Parkinson’s what a humbling dis
Covid19 has put everything on my journey on hold. At the time the hospitals were shut down and elective surgeries were canceled I had just completed all the evaluations and was pursuing some ST, PT and OT to improve the possible outcome. I am now waiting for the orders to be lifted so that the committee can meet (too many people together is still restricted at this time) and hopefully I will be accepted for surgery. I’ve had my tremor since I was a teenager and I am now almost 68 years old. During the last year to 18 months there has been a vast progression and meds were a no go! Glad to have found this video! It’s sounds very similar to the procedure explained by my neurologist. Wish me luck!
I'm in the same situation, waiting. Done all tests and postponed because of pandemic. how are you now?
I have been selected but in the meantime have discovered I have a bad aortic valve in my heart which they will be replacing on MOnday. This year just keeps getting better and better! That was pure sarcasm! I do have a meeting set in Sept with my neurologist and the neuro surgeon so hopefully by the end of the year this will be done. My tremor was so bad yesterday they had to tape my hand to the table to keep it still for the heart catherization.
@@inthekitchenwithbubby7724 do you have Parkinsons?
marina letina No, I have Essential Tremor.
marina letina , No I have Essential Tremor just like the patient in the video. Good news is I have been accepted as a candidate but I have to have a heart valve replaced first. I meet with the surgeon September 16th because they have to have a period where I healed and been able to go without blood thinners.
Have I facial spasms and neck non stop neck movements. Neurologist was suggesting this surgery and I said yes . Hopefully this helps 🙏
Sister has Myoclonus Dystonia and has been given approval for DBS. Wanted to see the process through a video to have a better understanding of the surgery. Really appreciate this being made. I'm guessing some of the details has changed as its now 2021, but still very helpful.

It is! Having my 2nd one in two week! PTL!
The scientists working on this are genius. What will be the next nerve disorder that can have its symptoms alleviated by similar surgeries. We shall see
Very instructional video about the potential benefits of DBS thank you for sharing!
Is this video sponsored by Medtronic? It sure looks that way. If so please disclose it.

In 2010 I have been oparated for Orthostatic Tremor with great succes in the University Hospital of Amsterdam (AMC). I wish you also a lot of succes.
Hello
My fathers life was ruined thanks to DBS. He lost his speech, walking ability after DBS. After 5 years during battery replacement, he caught an infection and entire DBS had to be removed to cure the infection and they determined it was too risky to put it back. He has been bed ridden since. He flew the surgery on his own.
I live in Scotland. Am 59 yrs old. I suffer from essential tremor. Have tried 3 different types of medication, none of which have had an effect. I hope I am selected for this treatment as the effects are very depressing.
My 9 year old has to get this done. She is in a wheelchair for 4 years now
Did you get it done?? For your daughter??
@@ninat8666 yes she got it done it helped her so much. She was the youngest person the doctor has done it too she was 9. Now she is waiting for Spine surgery but got to wait bc of the while covid.

Amazing ,But can anybody tell me ,What is the cost of this surgery?
Ive had three infectionns after the surrgeryys but the last one. Was a success. It does need more improvements as my trunkle trremors are still sometimes bad
God bless these Doctors and the work they do. My husband was diagnosed with PD 7yrs ago and his Doctor tells us that he's a good candidate for the surgery. My husband has not decided yet. I would like for him to do it for I don't like the side effects of the meds he's taking, but that's a decision that he needs to make on his own.

Thank u so much for the informative video,
There is additional background about deep brain stimulation and other neuromodulation therapies presented by the International Neuromodulation Society as well (see "for patients" tab at its site, neuromodulation)
This is just amazing!!
Thank you so much for sharing this video.
my daughter just had this operation July 2020
This is amazing.. I got a huge fear rush through my head though, what if she sneezed... god that would be insanely bad
A human who can do this to another humans brain is my kind of sexy. Not someone which 12 packs . Their brain is sexy. Thank God for neurologist ❤️
Thank you Lord for the gift of knowledge thru medical advances and breakthroughs.
Can DBS rectify Cemptocormia ?
My father has it with Parkinson
If someone suspected that some doctors implanted something like this in his body. How can he detect these things inside his body??
this is miracle! is this a medtronic product?
+dukefan Medtronic is one of the manufactures of the electrodes, generators and planning software. I'm quite sure there are others.
How wonderful. What they fail to tell folks is how people like myself our brains have been illegaly implanted and and experimeneted on without consent so that these surgeries are successful. My brain has been illegally implanted since March 2005 by Ronald P. Grruber, of Piedmont, CA
I have ticks and need dbs
also being tried for Cluster Headaches....I am a recipient of DBS for CH
wow i'd love to be a neurosurgeon :O

Is these devices discoverable with MRI or Ultra sound machines??
Is this effective with cerebral palsy too?

Hi SLU - out of curiosity, are there any potentials of the probes inside her head shifting and does the current stay the same in for example 10 years?

I was a wake the whole time
Was this a painful surgery?
wish i could get this.
Do they have to shave one’s head?
About the DBS surgery, how many years it will be effective in a person?
We need more advancements in neuroimplants and brain stimulation. Medical science now a days is a blessing but still we as humanity should now shift from more mechanistic surgical approach towards treating brain disorders to red blood sized robots doing the job of neurosergons. Instead of unsing risky invasive procedure that's being done here we could innovate biodegradable robot that could swim up the capillaries surrounding the hippocampus and implant the required area of electrode around the hyperactive neuron region. The implant would contain nanoscale resistors and an assortment of progammable transistors that are electrified by the ion exchange in the blood plasma. That way the implant would work as long as the patient is alive. With such innovation the need to send down the 4 cm long wire severing the cortical synapses can be eliminated and the risk of blood loss too. Medical science has still lot to achieve.
Until you developed that, I give DBS a try.
