İ'm attending a Swedish course, and on our last meeting last week (Dec. 11, 2024), we read a text about Lucia.
Swedish even has a verb for "organizing Lucia's Day".
İn the end of the meeting we listened to a Lucia girls singing.
Have a blessed 3rd Advent you all! 🕯️🕯️🕯️

My second daughter is named Lucia, but ironically her older sister gets to be Lucia as per Swedish tradition.

The background legend of this holiday celebration is so fascinating partly because my wife’s family celebrated Saint Lucia-winter solstice every year and I never understood the meaning behind it all until recently. Her mother was from Norway and my wife’s middle name is Lucindia which close to Lucia. Unusual name and probably not a coincidence. She spent her early years growing up in Norway so was quite familiar with this tradition celebrating “the return of the light” after winter Solstice. They made the Saffron rolls every year, had the candle wreath decoration and framed illustration of the girl wearing candles, her mother doing the little prayer in old Norsk etc. Talk about intersectionality. Your right it’s a nice little holidays tradition Thanks for explaining it and its origins. Had no idea. BTW Christmas and other winter celebrations are a big big deal in Scandinavian countries like Norway and Sweden. They seem to have celebrations going on all December into January. Great place to spend Christmas which we did with Inge’s Norwegian relatives. Their big celebration in on Christmas Eve

Scandinavia has such dark winters, it's wonderful that they fill them with so many lovely celebrations!

Everytime I hear about a martyr makes me cry, it's crazy how terrifying humans can be to each other. Our saints are amazing. Apparently Lady Gray is his wife who found the taste of the classic Earl Gray too strong so that was her preference.

The only female named country in the whole world is St. Lucia. Not even St. Mary which is interesting but of course there are many Mary related names in the world

You say she's celebrated across years, but it's not in the numbers of thousands in Sweden and Scandinavia - but rather Millions. Most swedes know about this tradition once they reach adolecence at least. Most, if not all, will encounter it during childhood in some way or the other.
