3M for painting. Chepo blue stuff for taping masking paper to the kitchen table for the kids to do crafts and art projects. BTW, super great video. This is the kind of stuff that brings credibility to the trades.

It all depends on how clean the surface is and IF you can clean it. Often you can't. Then you must use stronger tape. Blue tape is great IF used within specific time frame and if the surface is clean.
Nice video like always. I'm sure you guys do if too bit we pull orange same day or even sometimes right after painting. Too sticky and leaves adhesive behind in one day not 3. I've pulled orange same day and had adhesive behind in a interior.
SW sent me a discount coupon for blue Frog Tape. I bought a bunch of it and have been totally pleased with the crisp clean paint lines and ease of removal. It’s pricey just like the 3M.
G, day from Sydney Australia. Great detailed description of the different tapes for protecting, moreover cost savings with production v frog quality tapes 🌏🇦🇺
Thank you!!! I just used exspensive blue and it stuck, now I'm having a terrible time getting it off...just that little strip where the wall met the ceiling and my paint touched it.
I have found that blue tape does not adhere well to fresh paint. I have gone exclusively to white tape for new paint or poor adherent surfaces. Blue tape because of it's easy release seems more suited to metal, wood or vinyl where white tape is more difficult to remove. Any comments about this would be appreciated since I have limited experience.
Okay I'm a new, and rookie, homeowner. After watching this video I had a stress dream about all the tape I put down and have left there for > 3 weeks. I guess it's a sign of how effective the video was... ;-)
I always thought the tape didn't dry out when it was left on the roll was because the inside of the center of the tape adhesive wasn't exposed to the air, till you pulled it off the roll. I still think that has something to do with it.Good video!
Good morning Chris, thanks for the run down on tape. I was thinking of trying the blue frog tape and if so it will be the only blue tape i will use, just never had a lot of luck with blue tape. Have a great weekend.
You probably weren't using it right. If your not fusing your fingers together your not locking the tape to surface. Plus always wipe down surface before paint. I'm taking about the 3m blue
May I know what cause the standard blue tape to pull the original paint off the interior wall after just one day for the caulking at the edge to dry out? Now it shows the original dry wall color on the spot where the paint was pulled off. Is it because the original painter did not use the primer or didn’t use the high quality paint? Thank you so much in advance!
I got the Green frog tape in the plastic container, and on the package it says to remove the tape before the paint dries...never did that, but removing the tape immediately really looks good
3M Blue tape hell no, Frogtape green yes. 3M blue leaves a crappy jagged line. I wish Frogtape green didn’t come in that plastic container, it’s just a waste and goes to the landfill. I've never seen that cp199 orange tape at the big box store, I guess it’s not profitable enough. Good vid!
Blue tape is worth it....i feel using the best product you can to limit the chance of mistakes or a shody job makes up for the cost differance. I only use inferior tape to tape paper to plastic. Never do I use white tape against any finished surface but that's just me. Love your videos brother...keep up the content ....it helps people more than you know.
Also, if you’re painting a deck outside and you want to mask your aluminum that’s surrounding it what would be the best tape to use if it’s going to be left on at least a week
We started calling "yellow" production tapes like 3m 2020 "white" tape. We do this to avoid confusion with yellow Frog's tape. It actually confuses me now when our guys will ask for more "yellow" tape and what they actually want is a "white" production tape.
Touche! But when your doin a repaint in a rental or just repaint in general your not necessarily doin all that extra pre for a customer to get the results your talking about.
We just did a rental the other day put orange tape up for less than 2 hours and it pulled old finish. To be safe we always prefer to use blue inside to prevent this issue.
Frog tape Yellow is my go to for floors and clean trim or places that need really sharp lines. seem like no stores stock cp-199 in my entire state ill have to have them special order it
I am with you on the CP-199, none of the Sherwin Williams stores around Houston I go to have ever heard of this tape and for some crazy reason I cant even find it online.
You can also get your local Sherwin bring some in for you if you're tight with them. I've been using it for about a month or so, but I have strongly started not liking it. It splinters so much while removing your masking. I've tried everything from 4 hours to 2 days, and the results are always the same, splintering every 6 inches or so. Plus, I did not like the adhesion of it so I'm trying out 3M's orange tape now. IF that one sucks also then I'm going back to 2020.
I've used Sherwin William's painter's (basic minila-yellow) masking tape for over 30 years, with little problem on release. I buy 1" by the box. It self releases over time. Okay, there may be a glue residue now and then. Comes off with mineral spirits. Yes, hot metals can be a problem.
I do not know what 2020 (tape?) is. I do not have a problem with Sherwin Williams manila tape and will leave it on for days. If there is a residue, it cleans up with spirits. Funny: I get in hot water for not using blue tape because customers have been sold that it is necessary. Walmart has blue tape cheaper.
i was reminded of this. i've heard that if you have a bumper sticker you want to remove, you can coat it in mayonaze and let it set for 10 minutes, and it will come off easy and clean. reckon it would work on tape thats been on too long?
if you try it and it works, i want to sell it on your web store by the pint as "Robs Secret Sauce Tape Remover." works well on blue tape, yellow tape, frog tape, and hot dogs. buy one for the price of two and get the second one free.

I've never premoistened Frog's tape. Be conscious of how much paint you're macking into the tape. You should basically be dry brushing into any tape if you expect decent results. I refuse to use any blue tape because it let's me down every time. It's strictly production tapes and green or yellow Frog's tape for us. For the people who say Frog's tape is too expensive: If an extra $100 per job is really a deal breaker and breaks into your profit margin to the point that it's affecting your quality of life, find a better market! If i lose a bid over $100-$200 then it wasn't the job for me anyway. We are almost always the highest bid and I rely more on selling our quality and integrity as opposed to having the cheaper bid. Explain to them why your bid is more and how they will not be disappointed. Don't do it by bad mouthing the other bids but rather by upselling yourself. Build a reputation and let that land you jobs.
No mention of yellow Frog's tape!! I stick that shit to trim that was painted just a mere few hours prior. There are definitely situations where it doesn't work but for the most part we're able to knock out 3-tones in smaller areas in 1 day without the need to freehand trim lines. Nowadays I pretty much only freehand ceiling lines and unpainted objects, fixtures, etc... Trim and accent lines get Frog's tape these days. The labor saved and quality of lines are more than worth the additional cost in tape!

I don’t have a crew so normally when I mask floors it’s going to be there for more than a couple days. The extra cost gives me extra insurance.

Yeah I always run 1 piece, especially with plastic. Some times I do piece paper masking in high long runs. Reason being. The tape can't hold the paper gun weight while your moving ladder. Just have to overlap and tape the seem top to bottom. Iv tried taping then cutting my paper separately, but past 6ft. It's a bitch keeping it straight and twisting. @@dojafoja Agreed!! I even feel like the blue frog tape is less in quality than the green one.
