  • You have probably had a plant go from flourishing to fading, seemingly overnight, but what if your plants could tell you what they need to thrive?
This is just one feature of a Smart Green Cities project at Macquarie University. The research team, led by Professor Michelle Leishman, is developing sensors that allow plants to communicate their needs - be they for water, nutrition or a different climate - and automated systems that will deliver these needs at scale. The vision is one of fully autonomous smart green spaces throughout cities - from parks and forests to rooftop and vertical gardens on high-rise buildings. Once realised, these spaces will help to capture CO2, generate oxygen, cool the local climate and provide us all with more liveable cities.
