- Darksiders is one of those great games that you hear people mention every once in a while, but is largely in the shadow of AAA action-adventure games. Its only claim to fame is being a hybrid clone of The Legend of Zelda and God of War. Join me in this retrospective to find out if it stands apart from its inspirations.

no this game was always gold. its all the cringe fortnite kids who didnt jump onto this game until after 3 came out that ruined the franchise forever. The first 2 darksiders were awesome from day 1. Im not the type of person to fangate usually cause new players are always welcome and maybe some cool people didnt know about a cool game when it first came out, but in this case most the fans who jumped on this franchise after 3 came out are cringe idiots.
This game was better than most games when it came out.
Pretty damn good for "painfully average"
Such an underrated game, the gameplay is a little rough around the edges by today's standards (nothing game-breaking) and attempting to Platinum is a chore but doable, but the story as well as the art style and level design makes up for it. It's definitely worth the experience.
yeah I think darksiders 2 was also great and really fun and it was very different from the first one because it have 4 explorble world and you can also buy weapons and armors and weapons

The parent company of thq nordic has brought up a lot of middle range game developers and is really pushing for the once lost AA market. So is still hope for more interesting games outside of generic AAA and the pixel / retro style infested indie games.
Unity-Jank games are an utter plague. If I hear "Retro-inspired" one more time I'm gonna swallow my own head.

AA games used to be great and fun. The reason why they are returning though is the low quality/variety of AAA games. Hopefully it will be a triumphant return and not just a side activity in between AAAs. The AAA industry has sat on their laurels and needs competition.
It is business. It will happen 1000 more times and history will repeat itself. Game makers will milk customers and give them the shittiest product they can get away with til idiots stop buying the crap. Then when they are losing money they will go oh sorry and make some good games. After they earn peoples trust they will start fucking them again. The cycle will keep happening over and over and over. The game industry will never have a crash again. Maybe some companies will fall and new ones will rise, but the whole gaming industry as a whole wont crash again cause theres too many platforms and companies. The concept of making good games to gain trust and then screwing the customers over with bad games will happen over and over again though.
Finally back with the real games nothing beats the 5th and 6th and 7th generation of games been looking forward to this one dude keep it up
This game's been on my "Will play eventually" list like forever, lol. After seeing this review though, I definitely want to get to it soon. Even with your complaints about the combat, that combat still looks way more fun than the new God of War 2018!
I wouldn't say that, the combat in God of War 2018 is phenomenal man, you can rain down meteors and become an anime character once you get all the skills and the better runic attacks you become super op. God of War has such a good ng+ as well because you get new armor like the Zeus armor and can freeze time. The combat is way deeper than most people think and is fast too.
God of War 2018 is full of sponge enemies that can hit you back and put you at death’a door in two or three hits. Dark sisters is way better.

Darksiders was one of the first games I ever played on the Xbox 360. You can imagine a 7 year old kid going from a fucking ps2 to that would be mega impressed. I love both of the first 2 games, while I do think the second one is better coz it had more interesting environments, characters and massively improved combat as well as really solid side quests and progression. There is still something charming about the first game that I struggle to find in a lot of games so I love it for that and I appreciate you covering this under-rated gem, thanks for reminding me of my childhood

The Zelda part looks better than the god of war part.
It definitely is, yeah. The 2nd game kind of flips it, though. It's been a long time since I played it, but I remember the dungeons being significantly worse in the sequel. The combat was definitely improved though.
Great vid bro. Never subscribed to someone this early in their UA-cam career but you earned it. Can tell you have a true passion for gaming from the heart. I aslo just now bought Darksiders cuz of this. Never heard of it till now but looks like a game I’de like.
A one button system isn’t necessarily basic look at devil may cry all sword attacks are mapped to triangle or y but with everything else around it it’s the most mechanically in depth combat system

This was well worth the wait, I think you sold me on playing this game which I’ve been on the fence about. It’s now gonna be on my list of other games to play. I remember trying a used copy of this, but it didn't click with me and I returned the game.
There was a decent low budget God of War game that was released on Xbox 360 and Steam called: Marlow Briggs and the mask of death. Check it out, especially during a sale.
I do miss this generation of consoles/games. There were still mostly gameplay focused and not glorified movies like a lot of recent AAA games.
Didn't even know there were AAAA games now lmao. Gotta make up stuff to justify those $70+ prices.

@Synthetic Man, Marlow Briggs is just pure video game fun. Definitely did not have the budget GOW or Darksiders had, but they did get the actor who played the main villain of Big Trouble In Little China to voice the main antagonist for Marlow Briggs lol.
Yup, been looking at Sony with PS5 especially as their leading the $70+ charge. Not justified at all.
It is nice to see a bunch of new games are not increasing their price yet. Even RE Village surprisingly will stay at $59.99 for standard editions.
Got mixed thoughts for that one, especially fir the yet another terrible attempt at multiplayer.
RE Village is basically RE7.5.

The main reason its combat isn't as complex and fun as something like Bayonetta, Devil May Cry or the older God of War games is cos it doesn't have as much spectacle and doesn't have a style ranking system to show how good you're doing and reward you with more souls or something. If you break it down to basics, dmc (the best hack n slash series imo) only has one button for sword attacks and other buttons for other stuff. It's mainly the presentation that makes the difference (and dmc has better weapon switching and combos.

The hidden power ups in this game were a real challenge to find. I played this game to death on the 360
I've loved these games since the day they came out. Not sure why people dislike 3 so much. It wasn't as grand as the other 2 games but it was still fun and combat was pretty responsive.
The puzzles were way less inventives, and the atmosphere wasn't here, the story a bit empty

I'll never forget when I saw my friend played it and I fell in love immediately in it. I remember he was in Ashlands and I said to him that when I get my new PC this game will be one of prioritized games which I will play.

I adore the Darksiders games. Are they drop dead amazing? No. Are they good quality? No really, as some versions of the games are horrible. Yet there is something to it. 2 is my favourite yet riddled with a fair bit of issues.
These games remind me of a time when so many games were being pumped out at a time yet had such interesting ideas and gameplay mechanics. Games like Singularity, Darksiders, Prototype, The Darkness. Now every game want to be a movie now.

I love this series. I think it's pretty underrated, and I appreciate the fact that developers tried to make each game stand out from one another.

I wasn’t able to play the first two years back, although I was a fan from watching others and reading the lore. But I recently played Genesis. I enjoyed it since I was able to play as Strife. My favorite horseman. And the top down shooter style was interesting and nostalgic as well for older games like Baldur’s Gate Dark Alliance 1 and 2. Even the comic book style cutscenes are pretty good. I wish more gaming companies would do this more often. Go back to classic style gaming, but it’s only wishful thinking.

Three things :
1.)Darksiders 1 is closer to an actual Zelda game but with the combat of Devl May Cry, not God of War. If it was God of War combat, at that point, nobody would be motivated to even do combo videos or explore what the combat system has to offer. Even the controls reflect that with the melee combat with pauses etc and the secondary weapon that is kinda ranged at times and underpowered as fuck(Dante's guns). Joe Mad even has his original design documents in his art site with clear specifications for the game to take notes from DMC and Zelda(in case you don't know, Joe is a weeb).
2.)The artstyle is actually reminiscent of World of Warcraft because it's a series by Joe Mad, the dude behind the Battle Chasers, the comic whose style of early "90s amerimanga" with the huge shoulderpads, ridiculous proportions etc was used for almost every Warcraft title after it caught on, Warcraft 3 and even Diablo 3 was affected(Samael looks like anime DIablo for a reason). Blizzard was jumping with joy when they found that kind of artstylr because by then it was fairly obvious that Warhammer would never strike a deal with Blizzard, ever so they decided to do their "own thing".
3.)Almost every character in this game is a riff on Ocarina and Majora characters, War is Link, Vulgrim is the shady merchants / Happy Mask Salesman, the Watcher is Navi / Tattle and the story is on purpose a riff on those kinds of stories.

Honestly this game is way too derivative for my liking despite it having so many mechanics from games i actually loved (most notably hulk ultimate destruction) so i never picked it up, it's funny how you can make me want to give a shot though so maybe I'll grab it on my next trip to the game store. Great video man, keep them coming. Edit - "The Cops Spawn Behind You.. Not Even Around The Corner.. No.. Directly Behind You". I went back to look at Crowbcats video, he knows how to pick out gems in a rant that guy.

Looking forward on what you think about The Witcher 1. I think it's the best of the three, by far. The combat IS silly, but everything else is truly amazing, especially when you consider where it came from. It has a level of immersion I simply don't see in many games, and I regularly think about it from time to time. So many things are so memorable, from the music, to the characters, to the environments. It's a game that does certain things I haven't seen in the last 10 years.
While I don't think The Witcher III is a bad game, it suffers greatly from it being an open world and having 5,000 hours of content. The first Witcher perfectly understood pacing, has only a few side quests, and you can be done with it in 45 hours, a far cry from the nightmare that is TW3. Contrary to the first game, I never think about the third game at all.
I absolutely love the art direction of the series, and the gameplay is just fine, but I have to agree with most critics that it lacks its own unique identity, something that really makes it stands out on its own.
Great video. I ignored this series back then because it looked like another GoW clone and there were already enough of those (Dante’s Inferno for example), but the Zelda aspects sound interesting though, so I’m gonna give the game a try

The combat is amazing precisely BECAUSE it is so simple, it's a casual power fantasy
game where you feel like a BADASS from the very beginning, just like with God of war 1
with the sea snake battle (although you lose your powers after that)
Also every hit with the sword feels impactful and that makes the combat feel good even if it's just so repetitive

although it proves my point that the combat system is so good I didn't even notice how "1 button mash" it is.
After watching the full video - I assume what caught me is the Zelda and metroidvania elements you talked about,
as I really loved getting the new upgrades and interacting with the game in new ways,
guess I'm a metroidvania gamer through and through ^_^

i just beat this game for the first time and loved every second of it and even if the other weapons were kinda pointless i still used just for the hell of it, the wrath powers i only used once and then completely forgot they existed, definetely one of my favorite games now, sure the combat is not as great as dmc 3 but it was fun and thats the important thing
Speaking of THQ and Zelda, there is Sphinx and the Cursed Mummy. THQ was honestly a reliable developer. Everything today feels like it's too much of a risk, it all has to be 'the next greatest game' and they usually end up lower than these old middleware games.
The second one is even better, probably one of the best games in this genre IMO
I agree. Darksiders II is superior to the first game in nearly every way. Combat, level design, boss battles, story and lore, gameplay and traversal, etc.
I played the second game and it was aight. I didn't finish it tho but I'd kill for a 3rd prodotype game exclusive to next gen systems. PC can have it too I dont care as long as the game is better than the first 2. Make it epic

i wouldn't say having a single button for melee = basic combat when the devil may cry games is renown for it's depth and it has a single button for melee combos, what makes a combat basic or indepth is how the combat is implemented whether it's an abundance of combos or lack there off, making the combat based on directional imputes allowing for the player to make their own combos, how weapon switching works, what you have available in the air or at a distance and more.

The second one is the best, but you like what you, I guess. Better combat system with light RPG/diablo influence, a bit more open and varied levels, side dungeons and better side quest, better puzzle designs, and the drip was off the charts.👌🏿
It pissed me off so much that they copied Dark Souls for the 3rd instalment, like they had something going with the gameplay formula in the second, all they needed to do was refine it. They took inspiration from Bayonetta and DMC, take it a step further; implement dodge offset to keep up that aggressive mindset, make switching between the sub and main weapons animation cancelable for more combo variety, make the DT awarded for playing good and deplete when full so it'll make you want to use it, make the combo metre useful for Godsake.

Nah if you fully upgrade the tremor gauntlet it’s OP 5:27 there’s a sweet spot where you release the attack button and it 1-2 shots almost all fodder in the game and stuns the bigger enemies during their unblockable attacks
I don't think Darksiders was a AA game. it cost a ton of money to make and when THQ went under the CEO said that they made zero profit with games like Darksiders 1 and 2. Red Faction 3 and 4 lost them a ton of money so the IP was killed off. The only IP that THQ had that gave them a ton of money was Saints Row
Darksiders 2 is the best in the entire franchise. The combat is aggressive since there is no blocking & parrying and there are heavy and light attacks, the light RPG elements allows you to create your preferred builds, the puzzles are pretty good and the new protagonist Death actually has a likable personality.
Damn I remember beating this game when I was a wee young lad! Always remember the opening cinematic being super badass . Tried to play DS 2 deathinitive edition but it’s super choppy and a super shit port of course. Always fire content !!!!

I feel like a lot of people have covered Bloodborne at this point, I wouldn't really have anything to add to the conversation. I do love the game, though. If I ever cover Dark Souls, I'll make sure to do Bloodborne afterward.

Sub weapons are there for style if you want to make cool looking but ultimately useless combos. Still like it though :).
I think the combat has some hidden depth to it if you’re willing to dig deep, wich i can understand most people not wanting to bother with. But its there for the people who are interested in that kind off stuff like me.

Dragon Dogma does giant bosses the best in my opinion. Dark Souls is great, but most of the time you're just hitting the giant bosses foot, with Dragons Dogma, you can climb the monster and attack. Shadow of the Colossus did that pretty well too.

This might seem like a petty complaint, but I reeeaaallly hate the designs in temtem. But it's probably worth a proper review when it comes out of early access.

Darksiders 3 seems to share many maps with the first game.
Just got done playing this, I was playing it wrong all this time.
Wow I can't beleive i have the opposite view of the game I loved the story the combat is simple but i liked it for that i didn't like the dungeon exploring too much because of all the backtracking I didn't mind the boss mechanics though oh and fuck those portal puzzles near the end

Darksiders 1 & 2 are better than the vast majority of AAA games. I loved them so much I had no idea they weren't considered AAA at the time. 2 Definitely had better combat than the first.

Big fan of the first two Darksiders game (the third is godawful trash). I even like Darksiders Genesis (I'm a sucker for twin stick shooter style + diablo games, ala Dead Nation).

I think the sequel was a better game tbh. Refined combat ,better locations and story mainly cause of the protagonist. I also like the variety in gear and weapons. A game that’s way better than this series is prototype, that game was challenging as fuck but made you feel like a god.
Definitely seems to be a common sentiment that 2 is better...it's been like 8 years since I played it so I might end up agreeing with you guys.
Prototype is definitely getting a retrospective this year. I might cover Hulk: Ultimate Destruction first though.
