Suisei: "Your Japanese is really good, Shiori!" Shiori: "But I used Google Translate!" Meanwhile, a certain dragon somewhere: "My shitty Japanese senses are tingling."
Ririka's English is honestly really good. Even Hajime can come up with "rare" for raw fish. Expect nothing less from the extroverted Sui-chan immediately starting to chat with Shiorin. Bae really came in for the save in the end. Bilingual rat saves the day.

These girls' interactions are one of the best things about these events, it's really interesting to see how they react to each other. I hope much more in future. Thank you Google translator too
I just like that everyone has some kind of a language bridge between one another. Weather through an interpreter or their own ever increasing linguistic abilities.
Shiori must be mad quick with the google translate. Also, I still think it's pretty interesting that Hololive has kept to the trend that at least 2 of the 5 girls in each gen will be fluent or fully conversational in Japanese. For Myth we had Kiara, Ina, AND Calli which was by far the most of any of the groups thus far. For Council we had Sana and Bae and with the newly formed group of Promise we have Bae and iRyS. Now with Advent we have FuwaMoco which is a bit sad because those two are almost always together so it feels more like 1.5 members instead of two but it does seem like the other members all have at least WEEB-level Nihongo so I'll be interested to see if any of them move up to being conversational on the level of say someone like Ririka with her English or if they will stay at more or less the same level as they are now which has historically been the norm.
To be fair also, Calli's JP was pretty beginner at the start and got much much better as she practiced over time~ And as we can see Shiori with probably a bit of time put into learning could do similarly i'd bet~!
@@ninjablade2 Calli was probably learning for a long while already, it's when she joined Holo that she got the boost in confidence to actually speak it so she got a lot of practice in.
I think ID gen 2 had the biggest proportion of Japanese speakers of any non-JP gen. Reine and Ollie can both converse in Japanese at pretty good level. That's 100 percent of their gen being able to speak Japanese.
Using google translate amd being understood is still somewhat difficult. It will often directly translate things and be somewhat... robotic so having a base level knowledge of the langauge and using translator to help with vocab can get you surprisingly far
Ririka in this situation is that bilingual friend who think she can translate but is too slow to keep up with all the language bombs coming from both sides. It's when you can understand both languages easily but when they're spoken at the same time your brain just fry itself and you can't even process what's happening.
Sometimes is hard to translate things because in one language makes perfect sense but not in the other and most with things or words that are unique from that culture. You understand what is but is hard to explain it 😅
Honestly, all these inter-group interactions makes me feel really glad I'm multilingual (and learning Japanese), it's so nice seeing how the people who know both English and Japanese serve as the bridge that connected both sides together
Buri is also an amberjack btw, not a bream. Greater amberjack is also known as yellow trevally. Both are part of the Carangidae family, same as pompano. In short, they're all very delicious fish.
Amberjack? That's new, I never heard it as a SEA myself.. Plus glad Ririka can do some translate to shiori since she got the experience living outside from JP before.
I still can't imagine how it must feel to interact with Suisei in a voice chat, or hell even irl. Like I would be a total mess. Even after following her for so long she never loses this "SUPER STAR" aura.
If only language barrier didn't exist, Suisei and Shiori's conversation can be very interesting considering that Shiori love to talk about vtuber scene during 2017-2020 era. Shiori doesn't really hide her archive work after all so it is not secret that both Suisei and Shiori come from same era of vtubing.
They are also both dorks who can talk a lot about their subject of interest, so that would make a hypothetical conversation between them even more interesting. (and they both have their "dark" side with Suichan's Suicopathness and Shiori's unhinged moments. Feels like it would be hilarious to see them interact more.)
I use Google Translate for anime all the time. It's decently accurate most times. Usually if it seems wrong then just try again and it often makes it more correct.
Honestly I've interacted with a lot of Japanese people on streams and stuff now (smaller vtubers usually) sadly my ability to understand outstrips my ability to respond. A little google translate occasionally for some sentence structure fixes or weird words and I'm communicating semi-effectively though. It definitely helps JP and EN have a lot of loan words, more the JP side but sushi and sashimi for example are just the words we use too.
I thank Ririka-jou dad has job that makes her daughter's English goes off the chart while studying abroad. Also we need Shiorin eating out with her JP senpai and scaring them with scissors.
Even if she's using google translate, it is still helpful nonetheless. Will it be 100% accurate? Not all the time but it is something and helps to improve for these kinds of conversations that will hapoen again in the future. When in doubt, google translate, or any translation tool, is helpful. Especially the one device that Polka and someone else have that uses text-to-speech.
I don't think anyone's saying that using google translate is necessarily a bad thing, just that using it doesn't reflect your proficiency in the language. It struggles a bit with longer sentences and proverbs but for short, literal sentences it's absolutely fine.
Of all the EN girls, I feel like Shiori sounds the most "stereotypical" English speaker trying to speak Japanese in drama or anime. Other EN girls are either super basic, fluent, or can at least put up some natural jp accents
Most foreigners hate fish? oh, raw fish, hmm.. there's plenty coastal cities in the world, but unsure how many eat raw fish. To add to it... Norway was so eager to sell salmon in the 70s we basically made salmon sushi, as the Japanese didn't use salmon for that, due to Japanese salmon being inedible, at least at the time. Sashimi look very appealing to the eyes but that's way too much raw fish for me. I particularly don't like the texture at all. At least in sushi the rice is around and the raw fish part is only a tiny piece, so you don't notice it as much.
